"Poupee de cire..." is, in my humble opinion, the best song to have ever won Eurovision. So three cheers for Luxembourg. But there's plenty of good stuff in the 1965 contest - the great British entry, the haunting Yugoslavian song, a nice song from Germany that certainly didn't deserve 0 points, good songs from Denmark and Switzerland, and part two of the fabulous trilogy of Austrian songs by Udo Jurgens.
Sometimes European juries failed in their votes, vhy? Germany did not deserved 0 points at all, the music is magic and the voice of Ulla Wiesner is an instrument of femininity. 0 points to the incompetent juries not to the Country.
Thanks for this. Good to see all the entries and where they ended up. I must say it wasn't a vintage year, the vast majority sounding like lullabies played at 33 rpm. Its only the first and second that wake you up, and this no doubt happened to the judges in 1965.
And here is my German vote: 1 to Finland (Norway) 2 to Belgium (Finland) 3 to Spain (Belgium) 4 to Sweden (Spain) 5 to Italy (Sweden) 6 to Austria (Italy) 7 to Germany (Austria) 8 to United Kingdom 10 to Netherlands 12 to Luxembourg
I know that the voting is over, but here are the Brazilian votes, anyway: 1p: Belgium 2p: Monaco 3p: Denmark 4p: Norway 5p: Netherlands 6p: Germany 7p: Spain 8p: Italy 10p: UK 12p: Luxembourg
Just like the previous year, there was no doubt who would win this one, with the history-creating combination of France Gall and Serge Gainsbourg moving more than 100 points ahead from (once more) runners-up UK and thus giving Luxembourg their first win in our polls (although more will follow!). Another great showing for Austria with Udo, while Spain and Germany, who both scored 0 points in the actual contest, seem to be tardily compensated via our poll...
That's it, folks - voting's closed! Here are the final, official results of the 1964 vote - the top-10... 1) Luxembourg 278 2) UK 175 3) Italy 141 4) Austria 131 5) Spain 120 6) Germany 105 7) France 99 8) Switzerland 98 9) Netherlands 94 10) Ireland 82

Indeed, you are right, this is the correction of the Belgium jury; Netherlands 1 point UK 2 points Spain 3 points France 4 points Belgium 5 points Monaco 6 points Switserland 7 points Italy 8 points Luxemburg 10 points and finally... Austria 12 points and that compleet the voting of the Belgium jury.

Muchos gracias a noam83 para su votaciόn, que hace que Italia suba del 10o al 6o puesto! :-D (hope I got this right - gee, it feels like we're at the UN convention all of a sudden) And for anyone who didn't understand, Noam83's 10 points help Italy climb from 10th to 6th: 1) Luxembourg 94 2) UK 69 3) Germany 59 4) Ireland 55 5) Austria 47 6) Italy 38 7) Spain 36 8) Netherlands 35 9) France 33 10) Portugal 29 ...And you can watch the whole contest in my playlists!

Maybe because in Greece ( or Hellas :P) they are writing words different, but we(And Denmark and some other countries in Scandinavia) are using Æ, Ø and Å as well...
I thought you wouldn't - I just needed to show off a bit! :-D Seriously though, personally I had almost no problem understanding your vote, since the Norwegian names of countries sound quite a lot like the English ones (except for "Tyskland", of course, but I'd already seen somewhere else that this stood for Germany - strange word, btw).
Yes, I know that, but some words are very different, like (once again) Tyskland (Germany), Østerrike (Austria) and Storbritannia (UK).
I agree about that Tyskland is a strange word but it is quite funny to write Norwegian (Or other languages) to people that doesn't understand them :D (lol)
Min Topp 10: (Uten Norge) 1 poeng: Østerrike 2 : Irland 3 : Frankrike 4 : Denmark 5 : Italia 6 : Tyskland 7 : Nederland 8 : Storbritannia 10 : Spania (So underrated!) og de 12 poengene går til: Luxemburg (A funny song and a worthy winner)
Min Topp 10: (Uten Norge) 1 poeng: Østerrike 2 : Frankrike 3 : Irland 4 : Danmark 5 : Italia 6 : Tyskland 7 : Nederland 8 : Storbritannia 10 : Spania Og de 12 poengene går til: Luxemburg (A very funny song and a worthy winner!)
France Gall starts gaining a considerable lead, while Ireland's Butch Moore catches up with Udo Jurgens in 4th place and Switzerland returns to the top-10. The latest results: 1) Luxembourg 74 2) UK 56 3) Germany 53 =4) Austria 40 =4) Ireland 40 6) Portugal 29 7) Netherlands 28 8) France 27 =9) Italy 23 =9) Switzerland 23 Last place: Finland and Sweden, with 2 points each

And after the latest, totally objective and un-biased vote by lwsmackie (lol) ... here's the current top-10: 1) Luxembourg 62 2) UK 54 3) Germany 43 4) Austria 40 5) Ireland 33 6) Portugal 28 7) Netherlands 25 8) Italy 23 9) France 21 10) Spain 19 ...And you can watch the whole contest in my playlists!
London Calling..........and here are the votes from the Lwsmackie Jury.... Germany 1 pt Ireland 2 pt Netherlands 3 pts Norway 4 pts Spain 5 pts France 6 pts Switzerland 7 pts Austria 8 pts Luxembourg 10 pts and finally.... United Kingdom 12 pts
The 12 points by ESCsince1968 helpd the UK's Kathy Kirby tie Germany for 2nd place, while Portugal's legendary Simone de Oliveira climbs to 6th and France breaks into the top-10. The current results: 1) Luxembourg 52 =2) Germany 42 =2) UK 42 4) Austria 32 5) Ireland 31 6) Portugal 28 7) Italy 23 8) Netherlands 22 9) France 15 10) Spain 14 The bottom of the scoreboard is a bit crowded, with Finland, Sweden and Yugoslavia having 2 points each.
My '65 vote is: Monaco 1 pt Spain 2 pts Austria 3 Belgium 4 Denmark 5 Ireland 6 France 7 Luxembourg 8 Portugal 10 UK 12 1st 3 within a whisker of each other
Yay, someone else likes the Portuguese song. I love France Gall's tune, it was by far the most "contemporary" of all of the entries, but I thought the German and Portuguese performances (with more "traditional" songs) had a slight edge over it.
Both the German and the Portuguese entries were really great (esp. the former), but for me the thing about "Poupee de Cire..." isn't just that it was the most "contemporary" song. No, what I also love about it (apart from the arrangement) is the ambivalence of Serge Gainsbourg's lyrics, the thick layers of subtext beneath the oh-so-innocent surface. IMO, this songs speaks better about Serge's relationship with France - or any of his female muses - than the most extensive biography could have.
Well, you don't need to explain why "Poupee de cire..." is great to me, I agree with you! Though maybe you could now explain the appeal of Minouche Barelli. The song sounded like a throwaway, I thought, and Minouche could NOT SING! It can't JUST be the tin-foil dress, can it?
Well, I must say I love "Boum-Badaboum", although the live performance is indeed disappointing - not so much because of Minouche's vocal (the song doesn't require so much singing, as SHOUTING at the top of your lungs) - but because both vocal and arrangement severely lack the force of the studio version, plus that seductive male voice (Serge himself, perhaps?) counting backwards that spices the track. However, the studio version... now, that's just plain dynamite!
I'm still discovering some of the '60s songs including this Portugues one. I've only just discovered it, it's fantastic. I nearly put it first. It is so superior to her 69 rather exaggerated 69 song. i do like France Gall, but listening to studio recordings I think Kathy Kirby is better.
I ♥ both of Simone's songs, but "Sol de inverno" is just fantastic. The studio version is better (and longer), but I think she does just fine even with the edited down version presented here.
I'm now reviewing 66 and think Portugal has yet another good'n. I'll vote soon. Aka your other comment I think Boum Badaboum is sheer noise and skip over it everytime on CD (sorry Tasos)
How dare you?! :-D (Just kidding, of course) Well, for my defence of "Boum-Badaboum" see my other comment: I'll just add that it's true that it has almost no discernible melody, but that's part of its charm for me - possibly the most out-of-the-mould ESC entry of the 60s. I'm really looking forward for your thoughts on '66, another great year in my book. And you may say what you want about Minouche, but you better not talk bad about Ase Kleveland!
After the latest voting by gth311, Germany's Ulla Wiesner is catching up to France Gall (just 2 points behind), while Ireland climbs to 5th place and Switzerland - with our very own Yovanna - breaks into the top-10. The current results: 1) Luxembourg 44 2) Germany 42 3) UK 30 4) Austria 29 5) Ireland 25 6) Italy 23 7) Netherlands 22 8) Portugal 18 9) Spain 12 10) Switzerland 11 ...And you can watch the whole contest in my playlists!
Here are my 1965 votes: 1 point: Spain 2 points: Finland 3 points: Netherlands 4 points: Switzerland 5 points: France 6 points: Italy 7 points: United Kingdom 8 points: Austria 10 points: Germany and 12 points to... Ireland!
After my friend coccola's voting, here's the latest top-10: 1) Luxembourg 44 (3 12's out of 4 votes - nice!) 2) Germany 32 3) UK 23 4) Austria 21 5) Netherlands 19 6) Portugal 18 7) Italy 17 8) Ireland 13 (breaking in) 9) Spain 11 10) Monaco 10 Still with nul points: Belgium and (sorry, coccola!) Finland
...So, after the first 3 votes, here's how the top-10 looks like: 1) Luxembourg 32 2) Germany 27 =3) Netherlands 18 =3) Portugal 18 5) UK 16 =6) Austria 11 =6) Italy 11 =6) Spain 11 9) Norway 9 10) Monaco 6 ...And you can watch the whole contest in my playlists!
Here are the Patricks vote: 1.Switzeralnd 2.Monaco 3.France 4.Italy 5.United Kingdom 6.Norway 7.Germany 8.Spain 10.Netherlands And finally 12.Luxembourg[Glad we agree on this one tasok.
Another one with a top 5 that's hard to order. Here goes: 1 point: Norway 2 points: Spain 3 points: Ireland 4 points: Sweden 5 points: Austria 6 points: Italy 7 points: United Kingdom 8 points: Germany 10 points: Luxembourg 12 points: Portugal
3: Switzerland (of course I had to give sth to our Yovanna! :-))
4: Monaco
5: UK
6: Portugal
7: Austria
8: Netherlands
10: Germany (such a beautiful song getting 0 points? You must be kiddin' me!)
and 12 points to... Luxembourg (the song was already a masterpiece in its studio version, but the FASTER, LOUDER, more aggressive live performance make it simply THE BEST ESC ENTRY EVER in my book!)
1965 was much like 1964, a year full of good entries, all of which however were totally eclipsed by the eventual winner. So, here's my top-10 (continued)
Kathy Kirby R.I.P.

The British tune was likewise excellent, one of their best of the 1960's.

1 point: Denmark
2: Norway
