Look, the whole reason Maria is still with Tony is because this is BASED off of Romeo and Juliet.

Romeo and Juliet is a SATIRICAL play. It was written to mock the fickleness of love and human emotions. When Juliet forgives Romeo for killing Tybalt (her cousin) it was suppose to be a stab at how women, in those days, had to sit and accept whatever their husband does. It's very relevant to today's world too.
