A lot of Tull diehards worship Aqualung but my brother and a good friend who were also Tull fans always felt that Benefit is a better albumn. Looking back I have to agree with them. Benefit really rocks! It trumps Aqualung (not taking anything from Aqualung mind you) :)

'Benefit' is one of the all-time great rock and roll albums ever... ever! It definitely benefits the Human race musically (and lyrically). Pure genius.
this backwards flute is trippin me out somethin' fierce...that must have been hard to achieve in the studio in 1970, nowadays it's all computers. same thing with floyd and zeppelin, they were masters of production.
@TicalWave89 You just filp the tape. It is actually one of the few things that remain harder to play today (I mean, try soloing on a backwards tape: the measures have all changed and it's really hard to do it) :)
Ian Anderson was only 19 or 20 at this time...absolutely amazing!! Now he's in in 60s and still performing! There's even talk of a Thick as a Brick 2 album although I haven't heard it's definite. I saw them for the first time in 73, 74, 76, 80 and then 94
and just recently Ian Anderson's tour last year. They are absolutely amazing- Barre is a first rate guitarist!
Pure genious ! Ask a bunch of truly talented musicians (hard prog./prog , fusion, real jazz, to listen to this and be prepared for them all to be blown away by the monster talent throughout !
In the early days, Jethro Tull introduced a couple songs in concert on their next album not yet released. On the Stand Up tour they played two songs from the upcoming Benefit album. This one and To Cry You A Song. And sitting in my seat at the Long Beach Arena, I was blown away. Definitely a very underrated album. Great stuff!!!! Funny thing is, on the Benefit tour they played tracks from the unreleased "Aqualung."
To my "Benefit"... 30 years later........... MY thynks to mixing guy... 0n the knobs........this cut has birds, hand claps (ALL REAL..no digital) tricky mix to be sure......
FYI Ian wanted to be the greatest guitarist around but since Claptain already held the title he went for flutists he definitly took the gay out of that one long live Tull
@phuchew I had those same TL experiences when I was 14 and 15 (52 now) and this song especially brings that time back. I thought high school sucked so badly, I sat in my room with headphones cppying the the lyrics to Stand Up and Benefit and Thick as a Brick. I'm a bartender now so I guess it didn't do too much damage. At least I have something to talk about.
@lagunaflyguy actually prefer this album to Aqualung, though i heard Aqualung before Benefit. Overall i think this is their best work track for track, with Songs from the Wood in second place
Striking acoustics, absolutely fabulous album in its entirety! Saw JT at Madison Square Garden, Bendon Byre Arena, and lastly... The Forum in Montreal Canada.. Outrageous!
these guys helped me learn who I am and who I am not.....My first Tull concert was 1969 Houston Texas....in the Music Hall with Fleetwood mac and Joe Cocker & the Grease Band.................on 250mics of California Yellow Sunshine............ahhhhh Beat That !!!!!!
I saw these guys at the old HIC in Honolulu right after Thick as a Brick came out. I've seen conservatively 50 artists in my day and they were so far ahead of the rest with live performance that it is pitiful. I don't know how anyone would follow them...Hendrix would probably go "Not me Ace..." Wish you had been there.
@TheNigelr That's it man! I was at Festival Hall in Melbourne for the same tour. Best show in my life. Remember when IA said "We're going to play a song from our new album, TAAB". 40 minutes later!!!!!
I'm honored to share my birthday with Ian Anderson (and Laurie Anderson!) so today i say- "Happy Birthday, Ian! Thanks for all your great works... but especially THIS song!"
Been following JT since Benefit & Standup. I never tire of their music. Just say Ian Anderson (JT) with his latest supporting cast. The only thing he has lost is a little hair. Still leaps around on one leg, twirling that flute. simply great!
its no suprise this is many peoples fav tull song...its from benefit...back in this era tull wrote a more standard 4/4 rock...stuff wasn't as out there...mick wrote his own guitar parts...martin does too...but within ian's frame...mick and ian were independent of each other...notice how when mick left tull got way more complicated...ian and mick hated each other hahaha
