While you have shown that it can be done, you won't have to compensate for anything if the wheel head is level. I would also argue that if your wheel head is drastically off level it is easier to compensate than if the wheel is off only slightly. Now my question is, "Why not level your wheel if you have the ability to do so?
@randallmoody I have heard so many times that it needs to be level to NASA recommendations. I was throwing one day and it was off enough that my tools were rolling off and it hit me funny that I was throwing just fine so made a video to poke a little fun at a topic some take soooo seriously.
I can respect that. I think that many things in the art world, especially ceramics, are taken far to seriously as "law". I have seen beginners struggle needlessly and get frustrated when it only took leveling the wheel to get them going in the right direction.
i don't think thats totally right the Japanese use a slanted wheel for big bowls etc sometimes and shorter stuff will be ok but what about tall stuff say a 20" vase the angle is magnified the higher you go bringing the weight of clay further and further over surely the taller thin pot will collapse or twist as you could be bringing the center of gravity past the pot wall to one side
ugh...i really miss this...i used to go to pottery club after school every day for about 2 hours a day...that was the highlight of my day however it costed way too much i think i was the one who costed them...i think i had used at least 5 blocks of clay that year!
well thats a hard one to do. so I want to make sure we have a good idea on how this one should go. A dry pot that is fired normal speed and fired very quick also fresh soft pots fired slow and fast a pot with a big bubble and little bubbles and a few pots with air trapped on purpose like a rolled lip bowl. Any other suggestions.
I love it, love it, love it. Excellent myth busting of a commonly accepted myth. I always get a kick out of someone whining about their wheel being off a little. Tell that to the guys thowing on a spinning rock out in the third world. Good one Tim.
It has to be a trick, the wheel is level and the rest of the room is not, that, I am sure is the reason it went so well..lol Actually great job and good to see you posting.
yeah if a bat or your wheel head is spinning while unleveled meaning one side of your bat is higher than the other in relationship to the deck of your wheel it will give you problems.
I bet you could do some crazy stuff if you threw upside down.

what a great video. I have always worried about my wheel being level. You the man, Tim See.
I am trying to think of other myths, but I can't think of any. Maybe it's cuz they are all truths to me! LOL

i see what you mean.... throwing isn't changed by the ANGLE of the wheel, as long as it doesn't break plane. that's what was wrong with my wheel.
i really get a lot out of watching your posts, tim. THANKS!!!

I'd like to see the issue of trapped air vs trapped water settled. Which, if either, makes a pot explode in a kiln? Thanks.

So what you're saying is I have to stop blaming my crappy crooked bats for my uneven pots? That doesn't feel good. LOL

Maybe I would throw better if my wheel was like this.
