I hated that Sarah told him about his father being so drunk. For God's sake woman, you left him for someone else, told him he could never be the man you needed and now you tell him he ruined what his father worked hard to do. Way to kick a horse while it's down.
To lose someone to someone else tears holes into the soul. The part where Jack wants to find out if she's happy is extremely touching! He wants her to be happy but it's a double edged sword because in knowing that she's very happy he knows that he wasn't able to provide her that emotion and comfort. Like someone once said, "The most horrible feeling is being in love by yourself".

so at the end of the season, jack was never destined to meet sarah. thus, she was still a cripple, and didn't deserve Jack as her doctor or lover
