The only time we put the doors on was at night during the rainy season (monsoon season). This aircraft was like driving a Corvette.....and I was a 23 year old Captain. Still dream about 'em.
OH6A Cayuse (369c C20a turbo shaft) first prototype Hughes Company built used in the Military before it was used as a passanger Helicopter and renamed the Hughes 500c (369c, with turbine replaced with the c20b also used in the MD 500D and MD 500E turbo shaft)
Doors are held on with pins that are pretty much 6" nails locating through the inset hinges. 2 per door Pain in the arse to locate and hold door at same time if you are on your own.
About how much can you get one of these for after the military is done with them?? I understand it depends on condition, etc, just a ballpark figure?? I know what a new one costs..
They just take them off so it's faster to get people in and out. When they get a line of people waiting to ride it, they are only on the ground for a minute. They strap you in with a 5 point harness that feels secure. Falling out didn't concern me, but flying too close to the ground sure did.
I think the doors pop off like a Jeep, but I don't know much about helicopters, so anybody with expertise can feel free to explain better.
