  • this sick!

  • Other then The Yellowjackets they is One of my Favorite Bands !!!!

  • too much MOJO!!!

  • Holy shit Jeff and Sean rock

  • Who better to take Leroi's place than Jeff.....although Leroi can never be replaced.

  • someone please tell which show this is!!! and if theres any way to get the mp3

  • dave is getting a kick out of this thats for sure

  • I met Jeff in Charlottesville while he was in town for the last night of their current tour. He was with his father and the five of us (wife and daughter) sat, sipping coffee and had the most delightful of conversations with a very incredible guy. It was wonderful seeing the joy Jeff's father showed in his son ... he has a lot to be proud of!

  • I saw the second show in LA after LeRoi died, and they opened with Seek Up and it was the most incredible song. Jeff was just a powerhouse of sound mesmerizing the audience, playing his heart out. A stand out in tribute to the Saxaphone of LeRoi. It was just amazing. The band was still literally stunned on stage. You could see it in their faces but Jeff just powered through making it another special moment and amazing show! And let's not forget Shawn Johnson! Also amazing!!

  • Is Jeff a Human??? aehueahuaehuaehuea

  • I love what Leroi offered to DMB, but it is just silly to think that Leroi is a better saxophonist then Jeff.

  • He's a great saxophone player, If you are into his playing you would also like Lenny Pickett from the Saturday Night Live Band.

  • I have listened to probably every major saxophonist and I honestly believe Jeff is the best. He does more than just play fast notes and high notes. He just has such a beautiful sound, the awesome build ups to his climax of his solo, and the melodies he creates when playing are amazing.

  • Jeff isa BEAST

  • spittiin fire jeffery... hot dammmn

  • what was the first tune?

  • @twirk88 SEEK UP!!!!!!

  • Seek Up followed by

    Grey Street followed by

    #41 followed by

    Jimi Thing followed by

    Anyone Seen The Bridge

listening wise, i prefer listening to rashawn than jeff. though jeff is amazing - when i saw them he played 2 saxes at the same time, which is like a trademark of his.

  • GAWD HE IS AWESOME!

  • Dude, I got to jam with that guy! Our director got him to come to our school and I was excused from class to play with him. It was so awesome, he is such a good saxophone player

  • @spamodell Thats some badass stuff right there. Lucky you

  • HaHa im loving rashawn in the shades

  • Get used to him... he came for stay!. It is at the same level of leroi. I should not use the word REPLACEMENT because nobody can´t ever be replaced, but he is doing a great job and is getting better on every show. He has been a long time ago with the band but as guest, and i beleive that is the right one on that position.

  • This is from Jeff's web site:

He has an AMT mic that goes directly into a Shure wireless. From the wireless receiver his signal is fed into an ElectroHarmonix Q-Tron envelope filter (this is the source of the 'wah' effect you). Out of the Q-Tron the signal goes to his Eventide Eclipse, which he uses for various effects such as reverbs, delays etc... The stereo output of the Eventide is where we get his 'final signal' for the soundboard. He also has a Shure KSM 32 mic in front of him.

  • Applied Microphone Technology is the brand name of the wireless mic he uses. I know, I have one. The electronics are separate, The first effect sounded like a ring modulator, but I'm not sure. That wa-wa thing is pretty cool. With or without the effects Jeff is an amazing player!

  • Carlala31: that sound distortion thing is called Applied Microphone Technology.

  • jeff's awesome and will be great for the band. but he can never replace roi

  • whats that sound distortion thing called that he uses with his tenor ...?

  • Great vid. Thanks for posting.

Does anyone know which #41 that is? (date?)

  • all the vids are from the 2008 rothbury music festival...7/5/2008

  • It is crazy to think that jeff´s last name is COFFIN and he is taking leroi´s place... actually, i will say that is bizahre...

  • yeah but Jeff Coffin was great before he got to dave matthews........... so its not all this bizzare

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY JEFF!

  • #41 solo is ridiculous!!!

  • yeah, Jeff blows all away! He's so an amazing sax-player! Check out his high-notes, that's great stuff!

  • he plays altissimo like it's nothing

  • love how boyd plays the extra note but the horns get blamed by dave lol

  • Figured it out...it's #41

  • it is not 41 at all its sojourn of arjuna

  • I just want to say that I am a huge DMB fan... But can anyone here agree that Jeff is one of the best sax players that you have heard? including the greats such as parker and coltrane

  • He is a great musician and I think his name would not be out of place when mentioned in the same group as Parker and Coltrane. IMO

  • for sure, Jeff has been one of my favorite musicians for a while..about 6 years or so, and I remember how excited I was when I heard that he was gonna play with the Dave Matthews Band for a while..I honestly believe that Jeff Coffin is the best saxophone player today. At least top three. He's charismatic, has that great aggressive sound to him, love his sound

  • you're right! Jeff is one of top three tenor-players of the world today! All the stuff with the Flecktones and now with DMB! Just amazing, this guy!

  • @gators409 Shut up.

  • @gators409 umm and Moore, LeRoi is the best

  • @gators409 yes.. he is just underrated. :)

  • @gators409 jeff,skerik.or karl denson

  • Does anyone know what song it is starting at 3:15 ??

  • the song they play is sojourn of arjuna it is a bela fleck song

  • Love those fucking weird ass effects he uses lol

  • i saw Dave last night and jeff was fuckin amazing i couldnt se any1 being a better replacement for leroi. the band feeds off of him perfectly and he brings alot more energy and excitement to the music

  • honestly i would take stefan over victor in this band anyday, way more of a pocket player. Wooten would get obtrusive.

  • Seeing my first show with no Roi (Fenway) felt like seeing NYC without the towers for the first time. But Jeff's amazing. If Roi can't be there, I'm glad Jeff is.

  • I agree. I saw DMB my first time in ATL last summer when Roi was gone. DMB will never be the same without Roi and is sax, but Jeff Coffin is amazing in is own way, and I'm glad he's filling the spot

  • i saw dmb yesterday, and jeff coffin just blew me away. he deffinetly stole the show for me. he'll never replace leroi, but he's a great addition to the band.

  • RIP LeRoi - you will forever be missed. Jeff Coffin is full of energy and will be a great addition to the band!

  • We are so lucky to have a musician as good as Jeff Coffin willing to fill the hole left by Leroi. Of course he's never gonna have the same place as Roi, but heck, he does a great job, what a shredder!

  • Jeff is very good, but he just doesn't belong in this band. To damn flat sounding.

  • 9:59, hahaha, uh-oh horns, either jeff or rashawn, lol dave points the finger

  • Jeff Coffin was at my university today talking to the jazz band...great guy with some great views on education and musicianship...not to mention a great technician of the horn.

  • i had the privilege of seeing jeff coffin with bella fleck last year, it blew my mind away. wish i could of seen Leroi play because hes the reason why i love the sax so much and started playing it. Leroi seemed to be much more of a conservative sax player than jeff is, Lerois sound was much more appealing to me in DMB but jeff coffin is an incredible addition to the band. RIP Leroi

  • dare i say...no...i'll just let it rest...

    RIP Leroi Moore

  • i didn't know ruben studdard played trumpet.

  • how you ganna get at a trumpet player playing with dmb, you don't gatta look good to play music

  • Leroi has been the man at the 27 shows I've seen, but I am psyched to see Jeff at my two shows this summer...he has alot more enthusiasm physically than Leroi did (even though I think Leroi had a "softer" side, more emotionally attached to the music)

  • RIP Roi.

This cat can JAM and that's a fact. damn damn double damn. We, as fans, could not be more blessed to have such amazing music first from founding member and now from completely worthy new member.... he blew my mind at The Gorge last year. I cant wait to watch them grow together.

  • One of the best saxophonists in the world!

  • He came to play at my school today, IT WAS SICK BEYOND IMAGINATION.

  • The mic on his sax goes through an effects board, he uses it a lot with the flecktones. I think that's been put through an envolope filter.

  • how does jeff make that bitchin' sound from his horn at 7:00?

  • wah pedal/envelope filter

  • what song is it at 7:00?

  • Jimi thing, I think.

  • Jeff Coffin is a Monster. But i still miss Leroi

  • nickrowe don't talk shite, coffin may be more talented but he doesn't have the power of the dark side that leroi possessed. i hope coffin satisfies my need for this kind of playing, but so far i've only heard upbeat happy playing from him. sadly i doubt whether anyone can replicate leroi's soulful, haunting style.

  • Jeff Coffin is ten times the saxophone player leroi could ever hope to be. He actually makes DMB worth listening to. Enough said.

  • I completely agree. I have nothing bad to say about LeRoi Moore, and may he rest in peace, but Jeff is such an amazing musician. His solos are dynamic and theoretically interesting.

  • That's like saying Dizzy was ten times the player Miles could ever hope to be. Apples to oranges, man.

  • Comment removed

  • this is seek up the first song not 41

  • That is insanely good. but i miss leroi so much.... he worked better :(.

  • I don't know if he worked better...just different. Jeff will bring something new to DMB and his talent cannot be disputed. The question is does he leave another one of my all time favorites to join one of my all time favorites? Guess it's win win for me! Lookin forward to the future of DMB always!

  • They're bringing out a new studio album on 2nd of July. I cant wait! Does anyone know if Jeff Coffin is actually playing on it?

  • yeah, i'm pretty sure he is. new album's called Big Whiskey and the Groogrux King! lol. to me it sounds like Jeff had something to do with the naming of the title...

  • Groogrux is a nickname the band had given to LeRoi. LeRoi's memory and legacy will live in forever and ever but Jeff if a damn good replacement.

  • Coffin is the shit.

  • Hey MasterDrumma, when you find out what concert that was, please let me know.

    "EX"

  • 41 at rothbury past year. was a webscast of the whole show

  • Yes, it's #41. It is the end of it when he does the Soujurn (or whatever) interpolation.

  • haha jeff coffin is ridiculous. any time i'm too lazy to practice my sax i just gotta listen to like, any of his solos for like 5 seconds. also, he's a great replacement for leroi, but if he leaves the flecktones i would be really pissed. there are a lot of players who were as good if not better than leroi was, but definitely not as many who are as talented as coffin. hes gotta stay with the tones. (although i heard he can do both gigs since the tones havent been touring lately.)

  • Yeah flecktones normally tour fall/winter, especially since they got that christmas album going. DMB is def late spring/summer touring band. But you gotta wonder when Jeff is gonna get a break haha. the flecktones website says jeff is returning late fall for their start of their tour.

  • haha yeah, seriously. I'm sure he loves all of it though.

  • i love this!!!!!! i play the tenor and i will never get half this good!!!! What song are they playing around 4 minutes???

  • is it #41?? i think i recognised the chord progression and it's kinda swung :) check it out, LeRoi makes some KILLER solos in it in different versions!

  • yep. obviously #41.

  • By the way, please could somebody tell me where the gig was; both Seek up and Grey Street - were they on the same night?? Thank you

  • Seek Up is one of my all time fave songs!!

And then into Grey Street, what a great first 3 minutes, WHAT A SOUND :)

i look forward to the next 7!

thanks for putting this on dtdodo

  • That's some mighty fine sax playing there, made me bust out my own sax and played for about 3 hours straight...

What concert is this footage from? It looks too familiar, but I can't remember for the life of me where its from...

  • those are the coolest sounds ive ever heard come out of a saxophone

  • sorry guys, but one more interjection :) Rashawn Ross was outplaying Roi the last couple years, and as you can see here, he can hang w/Coffin any day of the week. I say give him Roi's official spot!!!

  • Bring back Butch Taylor!! Actually I think he left because he wanted to B with his fam. which I understand. Seriously though, Rashawn and Jeff Coffin would make Leroi proud.

  • Jeff Coffin is the Man.

  • BUTCH TAYLOR IS THE FUCKIN MAN!!!!!!

  • Butch taylor got booted of the tour cause hes a greedy bitch

  • Did Butch Taylor tour with them this summer?

  • no i heard a rumor that he left the tour

  • Awesome!

  • if there is anyone i would like to see replace Leroi, that would be coffin. Even though i love Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, i want him to stay in DMB

  • hey does anyone know what exact shows each segment or at least the first two are from?

  • July 5th, 2008, Rothbury Festival in Rothbury, MI.

  • I've gotten the chance to meet Jeff Coffin before . . and aside from him being one hell of a musician, he's one of the nicest people too. Leroi left some big shoes to fill, but Coffin has brought a new feel to the wind of this band.

  • some asshole said that jeff coffin is too talented to play with this band, thats the stupidest thing you said, therefore carter and tim reynolds are too talented to play. The dave matthews band as a whole has always been better than the sum of its parts.

  • dude needs to change the info of this video

  • WOW.I wasnt big fan of the sax until now.Where does he get the air from?

  • i was at rothbury this brings back so many memories. coffin owned it, it was the most fun i've ever had with my clothes on

  • NO DOUBT we will miss Leroi but I had the good fortune of seeing DMB twice this summer at Blossom 10th row and at Alpine N1 1st row and Jeff BLEW the roof off both places. I do hope that he will remain with the band going forward

  • man, ya'll remember Leroi's intro to Seek Up on the Gorge dvd? he was playing so hard and with so much passion you could see the veins bulging in his forehead. Your legacy will span the ages Leroi, may you play that sax into sweet eternity.

  • Yes my friend. That is one of the nastiest sax solos ever!

  • With a name like "notproudofit" what do you expect. Just ignore the dumb ass. He is a tasteless piece of shitNice

Anyway, nice comp you put together.

  • Thank you for the introduction!

    R.I.P. Leroi Moore! :-)

We all loved you so much, you will be my example for ever and allways!

  • Give me a break!

I wrote that comment as an obvious joke and it was three days ago! I also find it ridiculous that you guys are commenting for Roi to rest in peace on Jeff Coffin's replacement video! Wtf?

Of course now I feel bad for making those jokes. Besides! We all know that Coffin is too good for DMB, anyway.

Anyway, I hope that Roi's family is finding strength in this terrible time - but hey! They can look at the bright side! Leroi outlived the Dave Matthews Band by 8 years!

  • Jeff is one of my favorites . . but I'm really going to miss Roi.

  • It's people like you Notproudofit that make me lose faith in humanity. You truly are worthless.

RIP Roi it will never ever be the same without you.

  • Oh, and screw the people who wrote that they were glad he was injured and hoped injury on others. Don't bother posting if you can't contribute something positive.

  • So very sad. DMB will never be the same but they will go on. I'm sure Roi wanted it that way.

  • RIP LeRoi..

you were oh so great dave will never be the same.

  • R.I.P. LeRoi :(

  • I LOVE YOU LEROI.

    RIP<3

  • RIP Leroy.

  • I just heard this too. It sucks.

RIP Brother, you will be missed.

  • Hey fuck you. Get out of here, were putting up comments to remember the good times. Get lost ass hole. I hope you get hit by a bus mother fucker.

  • I hope you feel good about yourself Notproudofit...You will surely rot in hell you sick son of a bitch

  • What kind of person wishes pain/hurt/ etc on people that bring so much positive atmosphere to practialy everyone that is around them. DMB is a band of giving. dave himself unselfishly has shown everyone how much talent their is in the 100's of musicians hes had on stage. Your just a straight up douche bag and should watch what you say before someone allows you to be "hurt"

  • you are a complete douche....did your mother teach you to talk like that...wishing someone was dead?! really!!! ef u you peice of garbage

  • it would have been cool if stephan had broke his arm and victor wooten sat in. not saying that i want stephan to get hurt or that hes a bad bass player.

  • i met him and got to play with him at my schools jazz concert hes soooooo coool.

  • He could never replace Roi, but Coffin would def. be my second choice to fill his shoes

  • whos the guy playin electric guitar?

  • Tim Reynolds

  • Thanks for posting this! I am a huge DMB fan and have seen them multiple times in concert, so I just wanted to get a taste of what it was like with LeRoi gone. While he will be sorely missed, Jeff does a great job and I can't wait to see him jame live. Thanks again.

  • awesome video!! thanks for posting! I logged in to find a bunch of clips of jeff coffin and dmb and youve bunched them all together for me! thanks again!

  • way to go Jeff C

  • Yeah, ditto on the well wishes for Roi, but they could not have found a better replacement than Jeff.

  • Coffin is sick. Anyone who digs coffin's sound with the envelope filter should also check out Mondo Trio, one of Coffin's projects.

  • Is he using a wah wah pedal at 6:27? It sounds awesome whatever it is.

  • Envelope filter.

  • It sounds awesome. I didn't even know you could use effects with a sax.

  • Look up the video of Michael Brecker in Funky Sea, Funky doo, in the second video, you see more effects. Also, see if you can find the video of Joshua redman, in Jazz Crimes.

  • AMAZING.

  • he's pretty awesome, no doubt about it

  • Same. I wish Leroi all the best with his recovery, but I just picked up tickets for an early August show, and hope that Jeff is still with them.

The Flecktones are my favorite band, and to see Jeff in a different capacity live will be awesome.

  • Which show?

  • Amazing. My heart goes out to LeRoi, but I'm so happy Jeff Coffin is sitting in. Awesome.
