DOPE!!! in the music theory world you are playing triplets (at 1:50)on the turntable, so a 4 on the floor beat would be counted like 1 la li 2 la li 3la li 4 la li - each downbeat gets three turntable notes- or if u wanna get real crazy like John Bohnam u could play 6 notes per downbeat- like some of his fills on "Whole Lotta Love" (Zepplin)-DJ Scratch kinda does it on Rampage
btw, nice tutorials, very help, step by step and slowly for beginners. ive seen others tutorias that are suppouse to teach other people how to do it, but it seems they just want to show you what they can do.
is there any difference between real records and time code vinyls?, im using torq with 2 numark tt200 im learning to scratch. ok its obvious is there a difference, but is it too big or just any dj using djing softwares with vinyls can do this?
@gspty real records and time codes are exactly the same, but when you play a timecode all you will hear is an annoying high pitched tone with which the dj software uses to control the mp3 as if it was on the vinyl.
I really want to get into DJing... and I'm just starting out without any experience. so are there any good turntable set ups that you would recommend for a beginner?
@slowgo93 look at TT-200's by numark. there are also controllers out there like the VCI-300 and NI's S4 and many others. I myself use a Denon DN-MC6000 which isn't ideal for scratching but it will still get the job done for basic scratches such as this. Of course if you have money to spend buy 1200's and look at Rane mixers. Try your local guitar center (if you have one) to see what works for you.
ur vids rock bro! ive just been teaching myself and alotta the stuff your vids cover have found me at the perfect time. ur tips for setting up the angles n shit have been super helpful. respect
Great tutorials. I'm trying to perfect my tear scratches. The problem I'm having is that when I do the tears with the motor off, they sound clean. But when the motor is spinning, I can't seem to make the tears sound clean, any ideas? Or does it just take practise?
i tried connecting my turntable to some stereo speakers but it doesnt play very loud, i could bearly hear the music. would i have to connect the turntable to a mixer to get a louder sound?
@psycomexican666 Yup, you need an amp of some description between the phono out from your deck and the speakers - this can either b a stereo amp (which can take a phono in) or a mixer
hey man, i have numark turntables, and when i release the record so it can carry on playing it kinda gradually continues playing. the platter is never stoppes spinning tho, any ideas why?
just to let you dude.... i find these vids soooooo helpful. the breakdown that you provide is a solid foundation. along with a whole lot of practice and patience. Thanks for the inspirations.
Thanks for the tutorial, I am using the Ns7's and the turntable platters are soo much smaller then the record platters. slow practice and control makes perfect. Thanks again
Dj AngeloUk, I have a question. Is the red light on the plater suppose to stay at the balance point when you scratch or this it also suppose to shift? I just bought some 1200's but i don't know if i'm scratching right; thanks.
honestly man i Have learned so much from your tutorial videos, its amazing! big up to you! im envious of your technique and appreciate you sharing your skills! keep up your good work! hopefully i can post up a video reply of me learning some of your techniques! bless!!
Work it out yourself. I'm sure Angelo, Jazzy Jeff or Tiesto didn't need tutorials when they learnt how to DJ. You can't become a fully fledged DJ by just watching tutorials so stop looking for all the answers and find them our yourself!
@DJCKBaltimore - unless I've really misunderstood you here, to transition from track to track by scratching you can do whatever style/ technique you want (from babies on up) as long as you keep count of bars and beats. You should complete an 8- or 16-bar phrase with scratches (in line with the current track) and release the sample on the next beat. Best way to hit your cue when you're learning is count in the last four beats and then fully release the record - "1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and (drop)".
I SECOND THE MOTION!!! Whenever i tell people i dj they r always like "lol what... do u use dj hero?" f*** that... but hell this tutorial is gonna help me out tons...

great tutorials DJ angelo, i'm a dj tutor but i mainly teach beatmatching, this has really helped get a solid idea of different scratch techniques, your teaching style is very good, do you work with young people by any chance?
I can give u an advice, get any rap song, then, go to the end or start where thre is no vocals, and make a loop of 8-16 seconds with the no vocals part and voila an awsome beat :).
I used to "try" to DJ way back in my youngerdays... I even had two 1200's and a vestax mixer... Watching you is starting to get my fever flowing again lol.. Thanks for the lessons, you are really great!! Peace!!
For all you other guys reading, this tutorial also paves the way to practice the Prizm Scratch and the Clover Tears! Pretty important if you're trying to nail it down! (like me).
For me its a bit of both however, the way you scratch will be unique to you. Perform the technique as slow as necessary until you discover what works for you. Then you can build on this...
You get timecoded vinyl. This means they stay on your turntables and you don't need to keep changing vinyl. The program you'll use on your computer/laptop is called Serato Scratch Live (as DJRetaliator said). All you do is choose the song (from Serato Scratch Live) and it will be on the timecoded vinyl. Timecoded vinyl cost more, but you are open to such a wider range of tunes.
i'm looking at getting serato scratch live but i'm only starting out and i don't wanna go buy heaps of vinyl records.. am i better off starting out with standard records or can i get SSL straight out?
SSL will be fine, I use it myself, you just have to ensure your system is tuned and set up for minimum latency. You should buy some vinyl battle records though, as nothing really compares to using real vinyl.

Thanks MixDting, I'm just trying to share some of my knowlegde with others. I will definately be covering more advanced techniques but for the benefit of beginners, I am starting at the basics. It's strong foundations that makes a good turntablist.
So please bear with me...
