I am 55 yrs old the surgeon wants me to lose another 25 kilos which will put me back to my football playing weight of 13 and a half stones.,that mean I'd have lost a total of 150 lbs...I battled with my weight with diets and training to no avail for ten years...if you have problems please dont wait til your are too big, save the ten years agony and go to your Doc and dont let "fit" people tell you that your taking the easy way out.the "perfects" dont know what they are on about...
.Although I was never a massive eater or a "happy eater" and I struggled with a very low metabolism I never realised that eating held so many emotions...I'm strong as a person so I'll get through but I know there are some who will find it very difficult...Be healthy !!
I just cooked Christmas dinner for my kids ..ex wife and ex mum-in-law....they all enjoyed as I only watched...when they were finished I made myself a tomato soup...there is no emotion for eating anymore...no feelings like (ooh i could just eat that)...no hunger anymore...I just eat with the clock and the time....I also must have vitamin injections B1, 6, and 12, once a month, (a 2ml shot). The upside is that my diabetes 2 has disappeared as has my high blood pressure..tbc
I've just had this operation...I've lost 40 kilos in 3 and a half months so its a great success....it also comes with many negatives so be prepared for them...I have many eating issues especially with meat etc...soups and tea / coffee are no problem...I also can eat wholewheat bread coz white bread gives me problems.....tbc
@Flameofsorrow..The Lap-band is NOT less effective than ROUX NY ..A landmark study of 14,000 patients shows it is more effective long term but patients will lose about 20% more weight the fist year. However the concentration of muscle and bone loss is much higher due to nutritional deficiencies, thus band patients lose more actual fat which is why they look much healthier and not as drawn out. There is no argument on DS being more, effective however with a 25% complication rate its not worth it
I don't get all the nit-picking debate over which is the best surgery to have in the comments. I had open RYGBS 10+ yrs ago. It saved my life. I was a kid who weighed 420lbs, lost over 250lbs. I haven't gained a single pound of it back. Bariatric Surgery has come a long way over the years. One thing has not, and will never change: Bariatric Surgery is NOT a cure, solution, or shortcut to lose weight. It's a last resort. It's a tool to help you live a healthier life. Don't take it for granted.
@thepouchedpotato1 It's not a lie,the DS hasn't been performed as much as GBS yet. I'm sure it will change when more bariatric surgeons offer it as an option to their patients. My younger sister just had the same surgery this past February. We live in VA & had to go to NJ for the closest doctor who performs it. The DS is most effective for those who have already tried the lap band unsuccessfully. I had open RYGBS 10+ yrs ago. I was 420lbs, lost over 250lbs. I haven't gained a single pound back.
gastric banding is less effective then roux en y or the switch. Duodenal The roux en Y is a safer procedure then the switch and in terms of effectiveness, it depends on your indications for having surgery in the first place. There is much more space for food in the duodenal switch compared to the Roux en Y gastric pouch that is created, though there is less uptake in the duodenal switch. You have to categorize pre0op if the problem is an intake problem or that there is a hyper uptake problem
@PUSHMUSICNY Safety is case by case. I had RYGBS when I was still a teenager. I'm 5'11 & I weighed almost 420lbs so the safest procedure which would also be the most effective for me was open RYGBS. I lost almost 220lbs in 17 months. It's been 10 years since mine was done and I have not gained one single pound back. I've lost a total of over 250lbs.
