@F3FisGoodforYou it reminds your fingers to play with a lighter touch. so instead of some notes being too harsh and others being to soft its more of an even volume and intensity. Matthew Garrison also does it with his Fodera bass. I put a piece of Walnut between my pick ups on my Warwick and it really helps you play with more of a smoother attitude.. It probably helps more depending on how hot your pick ups are.
I'm a beginner. If the harmonics at the 12 th fret are off, how do I know whether I need to use tuning pegs or adjust the length as shown in this video?
@con6mill use you tuning pegs to tune your string... and then check the harmonic if it's off tighten or loosen the screw.... the retune the string using the pegs and check the harmonic again... and so on and so on till you get the harmonic right on a tuned string.
When I check the truss rod adjustment on my fretless, I have it like his where it's no more than a millimeter, but I get this buzzing sound at the first "fret" position on all strings (and not the good kind of fretless buzz). Any suggestions?
@adlibmusic String height is usually measured where the neck meets the body, usually at the seventeenth fret. The height you choose is totally up to you, but a nice medium-low action is around 5/64" from string bottom to fingerboard (fretless) or fret top (fretted).
These basses are the greatest production basses available IMHO
It is a good thing that they use the ebonol fretboard instead of ebony on the new version it has more the right kind of treble response sizzle thing happening just perfect!
its for him to play nearer the neck although he only has a bridge pick up. It also prevents him going too far under the strings when popping. It does not affect the sound of the bass just helps ease of moving fingers around and playing consistently
@mattman4bullet Essentially it means that after you've plucked a string, your finger has less distance to travel, so you can get back in position and ready to rock that bit quicker. Try plucking on the top of the neck to replicate the effect, you'll see what I mean :)
@mattman4bullet A lot of folks like to play with their thumb resting on the pickup. However, if you want to move your hand position closer to the neck or to the bridge, you can have the same "feel" thumb rest provided by the ramp.
@mattman4bullet resting your thumb.. some ppl like to rest their thumbs on the pickups.. but that bass only has one pickup so if u want that heavy sound where u pluck closer to the neck there would be nothin to rest your thumb on so they made that for thumb rest
i know this is stupid but what exactly does he mean that each string should appear over the horizon? Like if your looking down at it th eb string sould be the highest then the e should be bellow the b and so fourth?
is there any special notes for the pick up height if your bass has piezo pickups? do i want the pick up as close to the string as possible b4 it impedes playing?
How different is the cheap version of this bass? I mean... this thing's about as basic as it gets. The only reason this bass costs that much is because it's a "custom shop" model.
@lummond most likly becaus eof the pickups and the electronic parts used to make the actualy bass. It probably has additinoal features like an inbuilt noise reduction (im not sayign ti has. I'm just using it as an example)
Man, what Gary is showing applies to ANY brand new bass.
Unless you ask in your store or to your luthier to have it setup, NO brand new bass comes ready to play, neither the cheapest, nor the more expensive ones.
Also this is a very good video for starters to make those adjustements by themselves, this way they'll know better their own instrument.
Of course this is a good video for players in general to learn about setting up a new bass - however I dont think it is acceptable to have to stick pieces of cardboard under the ramp on a VERY expensive instrument!
The ramp should be adjustable in some other way if adjsutability is an issue on this part. For example would you stick cardboard under a pickup to raise the height or would you rather just use the screws??
As I said previously this is a $3000 bass for crying out loud!
You have a point there. The bass is very expensive and it should has that feature. Still the other features are phenomenal and kinda worth the prize (still I like more the Steve Di Giorgio's ESP forest fretless bass).
@alembicbassguy bass are set up to a factory default. for general purpose of play. If you spend 3000 on a bass then your pretty much looking to get the bass perfect for your playing needs. which means you would have to make alterations to it to make it suit your needs. All guitars come as factory default set up. which is not gonna be appealing to everyone playing it.
@clipzngunz That's the GWB35 which is the chinese cheap 'n' cheerful version. Difference is the pickup is a housemade soapbar instead of a custom bartolini and the body is basswood instead of ash. Fretboard material and ramp are the same. Should try both to find out if the difference is beyond one's needs (hope so, i'll never have 3k!)
@clipzngunz Dude, this video features the handmade GW model which retails @ $3000...Ibanez sell a much cheaper mass produced version thatt looks very similar for around $600-$700 new.
Absolutely beautiful, but worth the 3K street price Ibanez asks? I'm not doubting the work of the high-end Ibanez luthiers, but simply because it's a relatively "basic" bass (Swamp Ash body, Maple neck, 1 Bart pickup & NTBT preamp) compared to others in that price range, as well as removing features from the original GWB-1 (Ebonal vs. Ebony fingerboard, matching vs. blackface headstock).
It just feels that Ibanez "dropped the ball" with a great bass at a reasonable price with the original bass
The GWB1 is not better than this one. You have to compare by yourself and you will see that Ebony is not better than Ebonol in this bass. Ebonol is more resistant than Ebony and the sound is more warm and with more low-end, not as bright and tight as Ebony.
The Swamp Ash is selected, not a typical swamp ash.
The Bartolini pickup is custom, made only for this bass and I can say it fits perfectly with this bass.
After having the GWB1 and GWB1005 I can say this bass is almost PERFECT.
What's the utility for this piece of wood between the pickup and the neck ??

Great video, but you didn't mention what the string height should be at the 12th fret. Is there any starting spec for that?
Thanks!

Optimum string control and more control over dynamics!

@mattman4bullet His playing dosn't use the front pickup at all, so he has a ramp there to stop him from grabing to much string on each strum.

Nice looking bass....but sorry Gary & Ibanez.... I expect a $3000 bass to be set-up perfectly and ready to go!
Honestly - who wants to stick bits of card card under the ramp on a $3000 bass??? Ridiculous!!!

Agree with you at some point. However Hadrien Feraud uses in his Fodera Beezelite 5 string bass a ramp that is attached with tape.
I guess it depends on what you want and works.
