Unions do serve a purpose, however when it comes to governmental based agency's it is a conflict of interest. The number one problem with the educational system today is the Teachers union. It is ridiculous to have a vice-principal for every grade in high school.

There is no reason for Teachers, Firefighters, Policemen, or any type of government worker to be unionized because it is a major conflict of interest. Never mind that they're union members, their qualifications need to be looked at. I've seen teachers with high failure rates still be allowed to teach a particular subject whereas a tecaher with a high pass rate (grade of b or higher) gets questioned.

@poleske Working construction in a non-unionized job does not mean you are going to be subject to all sorts of dangers. It also means you can actually WORK. Two major downsides of a union are that they disourage work and they also use your funds for funding their own political agenda which you may not agree with.

I believe 99% of the trades should have retirement at age 55 with full pension. Not all union employees are overpaid. If unions didn't exist, many more people would be underpaid. In Canada, the minumum wage is now $10.25 per hour when it was $6.85 for a long time.

As a driver we make over $30/hr with a top of the line health plan. Many would call that overpaid, however UPS is one of the most profitable companies on earth and the "overpaid commie" drivers are a big reason.

If you think your wages are too low, then go get better educated. No one is entitled to higher wages. That is greed on the part of the workers. The price system sets the wages. The only time unions are required is if an employer is blatantly abusing the workers, like forcing them to work in unsafe conditions, and the labor laws are thus not sufficient. But most of that occurred in the 19th century. Unions are mostly obsolete now.

Unions do serve a purpose, however when it comes to governmental based agency's it is a conflict of interest. The number one problem with the educational system today is the Teachers union. It is ridiculous to have a vice-principal for every grade in high school.
Cut the admin and give that money to the teachers that meet that grade. Teachers complain about no money, well save it and quite giving it to the union.

Teachers complain about their low pay, so stop paying into your unions and keep that money for your self. @Kenzofeis Living in Toronto, Canada, I would say unqualified tecahers hurt the school system + the unions that protect them+dumb ass school boards. Never mind that they're union members, their qualifications need to be looked at. I've seen teachers with high failure rates still be allowed to teach a particular subject whereas a tecaher with a high pass rate (grade of b or higher) gets questioned.

If you ever worked construction you would want there to be a union because of the great amount of danger involved in working at a non-union site. If you want to be a carpenter doing minor home repair then you might be able to get by without a union but if you do construction the only people who work non-union are those who are desperate.

Two major downsides of a union are that they disourage work and they also use your funds for funding their own political agenda which you may not agree with.

I'm making more than double that + benefits. Later on I have the option to become a union instructor or a health & safety instructor. I already have my certification as a WHMIS instructor.

I believe 99% of the trades should have retirement at age 55 with full pension. Not all union employees are overpaid. If unions didn't exist, many more people would be underpaid. In Canada, the minumum wage is now $10.25 per hour when it was $6.85 for a long time.

Exactly right about being the whole "overpaid" thing. Many union companies, esp the one I work for, the employees are extremely overworked and micromanaged and the only option is the Teamsters union to even the playing field.
As a driver we make over $30/hr with a top of the line health plan. Many would call that overpaid, however UPS is one of the most profitable companies on earth and the "overpaid commie" drivers are a big reason.

we also can't retire at 55 and receive full benefits, i believe it's 62-63 right now.
if not for strong union influence, non union carpenters would be making around minimum wage and no benefits right now.

If you think your wages are too low, then go get better educated. No one is entitled to higher wages. That is greed on the part of the workers. The price system sets the wages. The only time unions are required is if an employer is blatantly abusing the workers, like forcing them to work in unsafe conditions, and the labor laws are thus not sufficient. But most of that occurred in the 19th century. Unions are mostly obsolete now.

Dad's proud & didn't want to take it but he was more proud his son is such a success that I can afford to do this for him. You should see him cruising around in his truck he loves it. Then for Mom's b-day I bought her a new Honda Accord, she said "better than any US made car she ever had." I said of course it is. Now bring up Toyota, but those are all made in the US & Toyota never had a problem until they got union type workers.
