I think they put these places in undefensable places to act as bait to draw insurgents in to a fight. They probably wouldn't attack unless they had the advantage. Kind of like in the movie Hamburger Hill
@eclipser2004 i disagree, you push in to enemy territory, you make outpost on a good spot, if they attack you, you will have the advantage, if not, you still controll the area, you know what i mean? there is no point doing this like in this video, you will get overrun or get alot of casualties and eventually you have to withdraw anyway.

Building an outpost in a valley makes absolutely no sense at all. You're giving the enemy the strategic advantage of the high ground, and although harder to build and maintain there's a reason why traditionally defensive positions like castles and forts have been build on hills, mountain tops and ridges to gain the strategic height advantages and to prevent attacks like those from happening. Stupid is what stupid does and stupid builds in valleys.

The commanders who made the decision to situate these outposts in indefensible positions are a disgrace to the uniform since it is THEY who sent these young men to their deaths. You don't place outposts in the floor of a valley (where the enemy can fire DOWN into the positions) just so they can be closer to the civilian populace--you ALWAYS maintain the high ground.

Building an outpost in a valley makes absolutely no sense at all. You're giving the enemy the strategic advantage of the high ground, and although harder to build and maintain there's a reason why traditionally defensive positions like castles and forts have been build on hills, mountain tops and ridges to gain the strategic height advantages and to prevent attacks like those from happening. Stupid is what stupid does and stupid builds in valleys.

You need numbers to actually make your stay permanent. Those 9 SAS didnt make a permanent defense.
There are plenty of stories about 4-5 heroic defenders temporarily fighting off 50-100 or more fighters, but its always superior numbers that win the day. That was true from WW2 to Vietnam and now Iraq and Afghan.
Problem here is isolation and too little offensive action.

Even during the Middle Ages in Europe 1000 years ago Castles were built on high terrain wherever possible. The soldiers paid the price for this mistake.
