The music changes, MTV decays into goo, video games go from pixely blips to insanely realistic war simulators, nations rise and fall, but we can cling safely to that one constant in our lives: the Big Red anthem will always be the same.

The Only real era of MTV was the '80s whether you want to admit it or not. Not even the '90s were that good. This is what MTV was about. "Like totally ..."
I miss this MTV. I remember coming home from school and flipping on MTV and doing homework,or coming home from the skating rink on a Friday night and watching MTV actually play videos and falling asleep watching videos.
This was a time when not just MTV but cable TV was great and was always something to look forward to. Now cable has become total crap! Just endless, mind-numbing reality shows. Even the "education" channels are crap now! Not worth the money they make you pay. As for MTV now....they might as well call it EMPTY TV!
MTV began a couple of weeks after I graduated high school and I clearly remember what a momentous occasion that was in my 18-year-old mind. I was obsessed with it. I clearly remember the Moon Man, the controversy of the Michael Jackson video being played that broke the early race barrier on MTV, and the best part...it was VIDEOS.
I'm 47 now and I I sound like an old fogey but kids today...the MTV you know BLOWS. You missed out on a GREAT era to be alive. MTV should have a retro channel.
@NyteScrybe I remember MTV i was only 9 a couple a years after it came out. i had to watch UHF channels that played videos 24/7 no VJ's. In 86 I got MTV I remember the rock blocks. MTV would show flashbacks from when it started. There were no rap videos ,rand b just pop, rock and some rap on YO MTV raps. A retro channel would be nice.
Oh I so would of loved to have lived back in the early 80's! I'm making a tape full of 80's videos from VH1 Classic, The videos will be arranged by year from 1980 to 1989 , so it's like my own little time capsule.
Mtv is a pathetic joke now. A channel that still thinks it's cool and relevant when it hasn't been since the early 90's. In Arizona we get a free digital channel called Cool Tv which actually plays current and retro music videos all day long. They even run the 80's classic stuff. Just saw INXS "The One Thing" and Billy Joel's "She's Right On Time" last night. Cool Tv reminds me of the early Mtv days. Have you played Atari today?
yeah I just meant their so catchy that you can't get it out of your head, almost hypnotic and kinda scary actually, I know my teacher didn't like it when I sang the Brady bunch theme coz then she'd remember it the rest of the day and she didn't want that lol
We miss him here on the East Coast too.Loved him on Mtv in the 80's loved him on the Beatle Years in the 90's Miss him in whatever we call this decade.
Atari started sometime in the late 70's...until it was replaced by Nintendo in 1985. Sega Genesis would be the new thing in '91 or 92, now there's wwii, MP3 there's so much. Atari is what started it all. miss the arcade days/
I think Magnavox Odyssey was probably the first, in 1972. I was really surprised to find out aracade games and home video games debuted around the same time. As a kid I figured arcade games had been around since the 1950's and home video consoles came along much later on.
MTV Today is Shit!!!, They don't play any music at all, I couldn't even tell you what they show or how this station stays on the air anymore!, They need to take the "M" out of music TV and replace it with a "S" SHIT TV!!
@PaulSchissel I havent watched MTV at all since 2007.I dont even know what they show anymore. When they had tila tequlia on that was the end for me.I hear they are bringing back Beavis and Butthead which i somewhat liked. But i dont even know when it will be on because i dont watch that channel anymore
omg...feel so fuckin old now,and im juz 34 lol. i remember lotta of this.has anyone watched mtv lately? theyre "really"no longer a music station at all.its juz another channel like spike,or tlc for teens.
Mtv was great back then. I was 13 and Mtv was like a private clubhouse. It was a channel that few people watched, but those that did were usually pretty cool. It just seemed really intimate and they actually played music videos. Remeber those?
These adds are making me crack up! Did no one laugh out in the 80's whilst watching those? And that old game was funny. The way the girl was hiding behind that boy...
I would be tempted to make some new adds like these ones, just for a laugh.
Ah, May 1982 - the day our cable system got MTV. It was our first channel beyond 13, so we also got our first box. Nickelodeon and CNN also came with it. And HBO was still free with your cable subscription.
It was a woodgrain box with a plastic disc with numbers written on top to signify the channel, and a smaller 'fine tuning' knob on the side. MTV was channel 15. My folks had it blocked in 1990, around the time I stopped caring.
This video is proof Viacom destroys everything it touches.
Ahhh, and the Saturday Concert (.38 Special, Rush, Ozzy, Duran Duran, Journey, Quarterflash, Loverboy, the list is endless) and the Sunday Special. Fuckin A, memories.
Fucking fantastic. Anyone else remember when MTV played random, silent, weird ass black and white clips from the 30's every hour (on the hour I believe) just to, I dunno, kill time and stay within budget?
there goes what used to be fun. mtv and the music.. nothing like the good ol freaking 80's mtv now everything is crap, there's nothing new anymore. you have to go back in time to hear good music. that's horrible, new musicians have to copy what used to be good because nothing from now days is good. that's sad
I used to watch MTV for hours on end, every time my Mom would try to turn off the t.v.(parents did that back then) I would beg for one more video! Everything sucks now, music, movies, t.v. Everything has been diluted and dumbed down. Mediocrity rules! You can thank the Corporate America for that! It's been their plan all along to make America stupid, fat and lazy, no opposition then! Just hand them another bag of fast food and sit them in front of a "reality show", they won't notice a thing!
Wow! Mark Goodman and J.J. Jackson. This brings back so many memories when MTV was Music Television. God tv sucks now! There are NO good channels any more. I have digital cable with 200 channels and watch about 6 of them (all on the digital tier of course). Sad.
Anyone remember listening to MTV in stereo before most TV sets were even equipped with MTS stereo? Our cable company used to pipe MTV's stereo signal on an un-used FM frequency. We had to split the cable line, hook it up to the receivers antenna connection and tune in the frequency for FM quality stereo sound. I remember HBO had a frequency also. Too bad Youtube no longer allows stereo uploads.
Yeah delosla, I remember...But we only had one of them big 'ol console tvs with a 13 inch screen (or close to it), and one tiny speaker. And my mom would have kicked my arse if I had messed with any of the wires. Probably because I was drunk through that entire decade. It was me, mtv, and Michelob. whew!!
Oh yeah, I did that in 82. Hearing stereo tv at the time was fascinating. However our particular cable company...there was some kind of interference that messed with the MTV audio frequency, probably the scrambling for the movie channels. You could hear the music and hear that it was in stereo. But the noise just made it more annoying than it was worth. Most cable systems probably had a strong signal and no interference. Just, ours sucked like that. Gawd I miss the old MTV ty for this vid
@delosla - IIRC, some cable systems still use FM simulcasts in rural areas. And we had our MTV hooked up to stereo back in the early days. Most component recievers back then had an antenna jack that was a coaxial connection (most modern high-end recievers do, as well). The cable provider would bring what is called an FM tapoff, and run the audio signal into your FM tuner antenna jack, and the video and mono signal into the TV. We used that tapoff until we got our first stereo TV in 1986.
Every Saturday night in the early days of MTV, 1981, 1982, and 1983, MTV showed concerts on Saturday nights. I remember some concerts being: OZZY, REO, 38 Special, Billy Squier, Quarterflash, Rainbow, Iron Maiden, Journey, The GO GO's, and others.
Growing up as a teenager in the 1980's I would say that the 80's had the most changes in fashions, style, music, and attitude. The 80's was a fun decade.
I know the red haired kid in the Apple Jacks commercial. We graduated high school in '86. His name is JD Roth and has hosted a number of kids gameshows over the last 20 years.
JJ Jackson RIP. RIP also goes to creativity in pop culture. Now it's dead and buried along with MTV as a worthwhile network. I gotta say that getting old really sucks. It wouldn't be so bad if there was cool new stuff to enjoy. Sadly it's harder and harder to find great music. The 80's were a special time for sure.
They mentioned MTV's birthday special-was this broadcast July 30, 1982? 'Cause that was a day after I was born! And they're still using the same basic jingle for Big Red today...
Girl gamer! Sean Penn doing the dude thing! The dry wit and curly hair of Mark Goodman! Big Red "stay close a little longer" commercial! The Go-Go's! Now that's what I call totally awesome!
What is it with 1982? I swear that the greatest music and films came out that year. Most of my favorites are from 1982. I could really throw a pigskin back then too. Just kidding with the last one. ; )
This is chock full of wholesome 80s goodness. You have your music videos, your video games, your pinball, your cereal, your Fast Times, your Hawaiian Punch, your chewing gum, your acne medicine. I mean, when you have those things, you pretty much have it all...
Defender for the 2600 sucked. It was barely better than the train wreck which was Pac-Man. Stargate wasn't that bad though.

I love watching this, even though it's upsetting to see.
I can't believe how cool MTV was back in the day, and how SHITTY it is today.
Really pisses me off.
Look at those graphics on Defender for The Atari 2600 LOL! I had that when I was a kid.

Just kidding with the last one. ; )

In one way it's actually back, though--the economy is just as awful right now as it was then. Coming soon--vintage '82 unemployment rates!

This is chock full of wholesome 80s goodness. You have your music videos, your video games, your pinball, your cereal, your Fast Times, your Hawaiian Punch, your chewing gum, your acne medicine. I mean, when you have those things, you pretty much have it all...
