We have magpies in the wild around my town here. I've always seen them and admired them from afar but didn't realize they were this smart and cute! :) Or that they could be tamed. :)
@ChemtrailsEire He arrived at the local wildlife hospital where we were volunteering at the time. He was a lozenge-shaped ball of feathers, but had no tail and only little wings.
@CapnBlackbird Thanks. Oop's, I'm signed into a different channel. Oh well. Anyway I live alone and was thinking of rearing a Starling. Some great vids on them here on youtube. cheers! Squawwwwwkkkkkkk!!!! :O)

Did a year's volunteering at a wildlife hospital which involved bringing various baby birds home to hand-rear. This one ended up being too tame to release.
Yes, having Pie is great fun, but also means you don't get much chance to spend time on your own because he needs a lot of attention. He also shreds wallpaper and steals anything he can fit in his beak! Having a magpie is a bit like having a non-houstrained flying toddler.
Not in the same family (Corvidae) as the North American and European magpies, which are related to crows and jays. The Aussie magpies are actually related to butcherbirds. They're not "true" magpies--but they're still a lot of fun!
How can't they be family? Their songs are so similar!
So, you are saying that Austrailan Crows and Magpies aren't related to their Northern counterparts??
What about the Ravens? These birds behave nothing like the Butcher Birds (who really, really live up to their name)
Come on, I really love my Maggies and Crows.Granted I know nothing of the Corvidae of the Northern Hemisphere for comparison, So what is the family name for the Crows, Ravens and Magpies in Australia?
So brave for their size. Beaks conical from every angle. Jaunty stride. Interest in everything. And such a lovely song. They make my walk to work a pleasure.
Magpies are awesome birds. Beautiful and intelligent, for sure. Most people just take their presence for granted and never stop to appreciate them. They continue to be noise in the busy environment of everyday life.
But every time a magpie soars past me, I stop in my tracks and watch where it goes. Lovely creatures.
I canrt believe what I'm watching... incredible. I've watched magpies out my back garden for 25 years, and the wiley thieves never come close. They just nick the cat's food.
Well, this one is special, and not your average skittish garden magpie (our garden 'pies don't come close either). This one was hand-reared and became imprinted on humans. We're his flock now.
I WANT HIM!!!!!!!! Chook looks like a bald man with a bad comb over at the moment, this moult is just too shameful for me to even take a pic of, I just have to keep finding him boxes to hide in till its over, he has a lovely new tail, and as the aussie saying goes "nice bum - shame about the face!" I wanna cry for poor Chook
i used to have a magpie i hand reared, he was a fantastic bird, there so funny and intelligent.

Mine was like that too. He was stealing everything, especially fish and catfood.
Now it lives in the back yard and comes back when it's too lazy to find food on his own.:)

What's wrong with the Aussie Maggies?? I love their songs. Granted I live here so I have a certain bias
Come to think of it, I haven't seen many around here (Penrith NSW) lately...
verticalsmurf 2 years ago
Nothing wrong with them they are nice birds but they just don't have the same status, I guess because they are'nt as intelligent.

I think Maggies are underesimated in their intelligence. They are smart. In evidence is his willingness to 'step up'

European magpie are the most intelligent birds in the world and rank among the most intelligent animals.
