why is this an issue? Lets say the gift of tongues doesn't exist, which if you believe that you must have completely brain farted over the book of acts to have missed. wow this sermon is deep. i'm learning so much here. i've grown up in a church where tongues speaking is the norm and it's scary how deceived so many people are. it doesn't even say in the Bible that tongues is a special language that only God understands. There are Scriptures that are not interpreted but are simply read and understood through the original text which is usually very precise. I have had experience with this speaking in tongues. I have nearly concluded through my own study that this current "private prayer language" is just another one of those things. Tell yourself all you like that it is a gift. When I hear it, it sounds like chanting and often it is repetitive. Just the same ten or twenty syllables being repeated over and over. What need that G-d already knows about, can't just be communicated in the language that YOU understand? Why does it need to be "special"? Folks, I have been a Christian for 45 years and these videos showing people flopping and shaking, running around and babbling, etc have NOTHING, I repeat NOTHING to do with following the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus was rational, thinking, measured in his responses, and ALWAYS in control.

paul said it well in acts 19 and in other places repent ye and recieve the Holy Ghost , other places say the same thing have you recived the Holy Spirirt Since you belived , the babtizm of the Holy Spirit was on 120 then thousands more as peter and paul preached. then in scripture it says in John 16:7 Jesus said that unless He goes away the Holy spirit can't come he said he would send Him to us , other places in this chapter talks about the confortor the Holy spirit,it is a free gift<3

Let's remember that speaking in tongues is God's GIFT and Paul claimed that he spoke in tongues more than anyone. God gives good gifts, yes?
Look at many of the great followers of Christ would spoke in tongues regularly, like Smith Wigglesworth and a host of others. It is a gift, not something to be discredited. If you don't want it, you won't have it. If you reject God's gift, then that is your choice. There are good sources out there that explain how God's gift is useful and for today.

@SeraphsWitness Where in scriptures is the word, "trinity"? Yet we use it to describe God. There are a lot of things you will not find written in scripture, yet is biblical truth. I find that people who try to discredit the gift of tongues are nothing more than uncomfortable with it, because they do not understand this (gift) and that is what it is, a gift, from God himself.
@manderbos The trinity is demonstrated multiple times in the bible, which I'm sure you know. Tongues as a prayer language, however, is not. Can you show me where it is?
We derive our doctrine from scripture, not special revelation. Tongues as a prayer language is unbiblical, the trinity is not.
@SeraphsWitness When Paul said he thanks God he speaks in tongues more than all of you, what do you think he was doing? What do you believe the gift was for? Only unbelievers? There are thousands of stories out there about how important speaking in tongues is and what it is all about. I think you are not upset about how it is being used, but rather upset that Christians do it, in the first place. You'll have to take your complaint up with God, who only gives good gifts.

Thousands of stories? In scripture? I don't know of any. As for real life, I don't doubt it. But can you prove whether or not it's pagan? Normally we test such things against scripture, but this is unfortunately not an attribute of the Charismatic movement.

@SeraphsWitness 1 Corinthians 14 Paul speaks about praying in tongues and singing in tongues but also that one show speak with understanding when around others. He says tongues is praying mysteries to God and for edification. The gift of tongues will pass away when Christ returns, but until then, we need it.

the people in the video have issues, but Paul does say he uses tongues in his private devotion for self-edificacation. (1Cor. 14:18-19). It should be spirit led, not taught to be done in church. If here is no interpretation-sit down and be silent. Prophesying (fortelling God's truth to come) is more fruitful for the body of Christ. Read the Chapter in context!
1 Cor.:39 "So, my borthers, earnestly desire to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues." Also, in Ch. 13 where it expresses the "perfect", John ( who I get fed from frequently ) beleives that this perfect is the Bible. While I believe that the Bible is infallible, that perfect is clearly the restoration by God of all His people. Matthew Henry ( Prince of Commentators ) even said this refers to the consummation. This perfect being the Bible has only been used since the modern Pentecost.
I am not cessationist,but Satan is counterfeiter. Though being raised in Full Gospel/Pentecostal circuits, I understand that sometimes people seek the sign and wonder more than that of the Word( John 6 )However, if you look at Acts 8, there is a distinction from those who beleive intially, and Peter coming later to baptise in the Holy Spirit because they hadn't received Him ( the H.S. ) yet. Everything must be done in decency and order. All must be tested to the Word, but this is secondary issue

Jesus Christ himself, in his last words before ascending spoke, "and these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will drive out demons, they will speak in new tongues..." (Mark 16:17). The word for "new" means never-before-spoken.
This is consistent with Paul's teaching in I Cor 14 that says "anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit.
@Gaericon That is a lie. The word used is "kainos" in the Greek. It means recently made, fresh, recent, unused, unworn. In it's context it fits perfectly, They will speak in tongues they did not previously speak, this supports The Biblical view, that they will speak in tongues they did not speak with before. You are making an assertion that it is speaking of a completely new and unheard of language, and this the text does not support. Notice also that the word "Tongues" is in the plural.

Jesus did not say speaking newly (adverb describing the speaking) in tongues; he said speak in new (adjective describing the tongue) tongues.
@Gaericon Did they previously speak the languages before the day of Pentecost? No they didn't, they were new languages to them and to the rest of the Jews as Judgment from God (Isaiah 28:11-12, 1 Cor 14:21-22) Acts 2 goes on to list the different languages they spoke, please read it again carefully.

@Kaley2291 Yes I have read the whole Bible, The only places that talk about speaking in tongues is Acts 2,10,19 and 1 Corinthians 14. There is no spiritual unknown language other than the FAKE counterfeit language the Corinthians were using, and in that they were cursing God by mistake because they didn't know what they were saying.(1Cor 12.3) There is no place in the Bible where people spoke in tongues other than in Acts, and the only time they're mentioned is when Paul addresses them in 1Cor14
You think that they were speaking in fake tongues? Why then, does Paul go to such lengths to explain that speaking in tongues edifies yourself (and no one else, 14:4), that he himself prays both in tongues and in his own language (14:14-15), that he speaks in tongues more than anyone else (14:18), and that speaking in tongues is not to be forbidden (14:39).
All Paul is saying is to be more orderly in church.
@Gaericon No spiritual gift is for the edification of ones own self, this directly contradicts 1 Peter 4:10, again, Paul was speaking of the the counterfit pagan tongue the Corinthians were using, and in doing so, they were calling Jesus accursed (1 Cor 12:3) I am not condemning the true gift of tongues, That is the gift of languages, I am condemning this false pagan tongue that has crept into the church during the past 100 years.

If you've read all the positive statements made by Paul in I Cor 14, it is impossible to reach the conclusion that it was a heretical tongue they were speaking.

@Kaley2291 If you look closely at the text, you see that every time Paul says "A Tongue" He is referring to their false pagan counterfeit tongue, When he uses it in the plural "Tongues" he is referring back to the real gift of language. If you understand this, it makes it very simple to understand. Since the gift of tongues were languages, that means there was more than one, Paul referred to the counterfeit gift as singular, since there can't be multiple languages of babble.

I didn't feel like watching all the videos since John didn't seem to make a strong Biblical argument for his point, so I skipped to this one since you suggested it. MacArthur is again making a weak argument by pulling Old Testament passages that have nothing to do with speaking in tongues. A strange tongue in the Old Testament referred to another language the Israelites did not know It seems like MacArthur is coming to the Bible with a preconceived notion and interpreting things the way he wants

I have seen and heard strong God-fearing Christians speak in tongues with my own eyes and ears. Even though I dont fully grasp it, It is done out of reverence to truly glorify God. It is biblical. BTW, fellow pastor and ahem - Calvinist - Mark Driscoll has no problem believing they're for today. Sadly, we have seen the crazy side of it, and have sterotyped it. Speaking in Tongues is not some spiritual language, i don't know where people get that from, it says in acts 2 that they spoke to them each in their own language. tongues in the bible was the super natural gift of speaking in worldly languages previously unknown to those speaking it for the edification of those hearing.
Yes... speaking in tongues can be speaking in other wordly language but it is can be speaking in God's language.
In this case, the believer may not have any idea what is being said unless there is an interpreter. Example: Corinthians 13:1 If I speakin in tongues of men and angels, but have not love..." It is both. :)

Secondly, in Acts 2, all of the people were amazed and wondered what it meant when they all heard Peter preaching in their language. In other words, it doesn't matter what language Peter was preaching; every person heard in their native tongue.

The gift of tongues was to indicate to the Jews the fulfillment of the prophecies in Joel and Isaiah about tongues. It still serves as a sign for those seeking truth regarding these prophecies.
If you read verse 2 again, it says the unknown tongue is between the speaker and God-it says NO man understandeth him (therefore it is not a tongue or language known by anybody).

There are Scriptures that are not interpreted but are simply read and understood through the original text which is usually very precise. I have had experience with this speaking in tongues. Not doing it myself, but being in that atmosphere. It is so very fake. I have always felt a dark atmosphere while in these rooms with groups of people praying in tongues.

I have nearly concluded through my own study that this current "private prayer language" is just another one of those things. Tell yourself all you like that it is a gift. When I hear it, it sounds like chanting and often it is repetitive. Just the same ten or twenty syllables being repeated over and over. What need that G-d already knows about, can't just be communicated in the language that YOU understand? Why does it need to be "special"? i think that you probably think that being a christian is about having some sort of out of body experiance- i just came back from church and they were preaching on how Paul was stoned and all the horrible things that he went through and not once did he dwell on these experinaces that pentacostle church try to dwell on paul was inloved with christ&he loved people.christ said that if you love one another by this man should know that you are my servants- he did not say that if you speak in tongues.

Daniel didnt speak in tongues and he prayed to God. so do i. i pray to God without tongues. tongues may exist but its not nessasry this is what Paul is saying. i know people that pray in tongues but quitly.

Let's remember that speaking in tongues is God's GIFT and Paul claimed that he spoke in tongues more than anyone. God gives good gifts, yes?
Look at many of the great followers of Christ would spoke in tongues regularly, like Smith Wigglesworth and a host of others. It is a gift, not something to be discredited. If you don't want it, you won't have it. If you reject God's gift, then that is your choice. There are good sources out there that explain how God's gift is useful and for today.

I find that people who try to discredit the gift of tongues are nothing more than uncomfortable with it, because they do not understand this (gift) and that is what it is, a gift, from God himself.

We derive our doctrine from scripture, not special revelation. Tongues as a prayer language is unbiblical, the trinity is not.

@SeraphsWitness When Paul said he thanks God he speaks in tongues more than all of you, what do you think he was doing? What do you believe the gift was for? Only unbelievers? There are thousands of stories out there about how important speaking in tongues is and what it is all about. I think you are not upset about how it is being used, but rather upset that Christians do it, in the first place. You'll have to take your complaint up with God, who only gives good gifts.

Thousands of stories? In scripture? I don't know of any. As for real life, I don't doubt it. But can you prove whether or not it's pagan? Normally we test such things against scripture, but this is unfortunately not an attribute of the Charismatic movement.
I'm not "upset" at all, actually. I hope you don't get that impression. And my only "complaint" is your lack of scripture. Do you have any, or just subjective experience?

He says tongues is praying mysteries to God and for edification. The gift of tongues will pass away when Christ returns, but until then, we need it.

He is a prideful man puffed up with worldly knowledge and will give account before God one day for leading people who dont have the ability to find the truth for themselves. I have been in pentecostal churches for 40 years and ive never seen anything like this happen. But i have seen plenty of men like John Macarthur and woe be unto those who lift him above Jesus Christ.

For I have witnessed the occult worshiping the gods against the God of Israel- pretending to be Christians speaking in tongues. BUt I have also seen real Christian tongues. Jesus told us that we will be judged with the same standard we judge others, yet I don't see any life you are speaking to this man.

the people in the video have issues, but Paul does say he uses tongues in his private devotion for self-edificacation. (1Cor. 14:18-19). It should be spirit led, not taught to be done in church. If here is no interpretation-sit down and be silent. Prophesying (fortelling God's truth to come) is more fruitful for the body of Christ. Read the Chapter in context!

1 Cor.:39 "So, my borthers, earnestly desire to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues." Also, in Ch. 13 where it expresses the "perfect", John ( who I get fed from frequently ) beleives that this perfect is the Bible. While I believe that the Bible is infallible, that perfect is clearly the restoration by God of all His people. Matthew Henry ( Prince of Commentators ) even said this refers to the consummation. This perfect being the Bible has only been used since the modern Pentecost.

Though being raised in Full Gospel/Pentecostal circuits, I understand that sometimes people seek the sign and wonder more than that of the Word( John 6 )However, if you look at Acts 8, there is a distinction from those who beleive intially, and Peter coming later to baptise in the Holy Spirit because they hadn't received Him ( the H.S. ) yet. Everything must be done in decency and order. All must be tested to the Word, but this is secondary issue

Jesus Christ himself, in his last words before ascending spoke, "and these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will drive out demons, they will speak in new tongues..." (Mark 16:17). The word for "new" means never-before-spoken.
This is consistent with Paul's teaching in I Cor 14 that says "anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit.

@Gaericon That is a lie. The word used is "kainos" in the Greek. It means recently made, fresh, recent, unused, unworn. In it's context it fits perfectly, They will speak in tongues they did not previously speak, this supports The Biblical view, that they will speak in tongues they did not speak with before. You are making an assertion that it is speaking of a completely new and unheard of language, and this the text does not support. Notice also that the word "Tongues" is in the plural.

Jesus did not say speaking newly (adverb describing the speaking) in tongues; he said speak in new (adjective describing the tongue) tongues.

No they didn't, they were new languages to them and to the rest of the Jews as Judgment from God (Isaiah 28:11-12, 1 Cor 14:21-22) Acts 2 goes on to list the different languages they spoke, please read it again carefully.

There are two huge groups of people that believe completely different things. One of those groups is right, and the other, with their pastors and teachers, has been deceived by the enemy. Therefore, I tell you to be like Paul and know only this: Christ crucified. Then, knowing this, burn every doctrine taught you by a person and ask God to teach you himself, knowing that some things you think will be burned and you will be taught things that may be difficult.

I have discernment and know that this whole Charismatic movement is from Satan, they are more concerned with speaking in tongues than speaking about sin, not to mention it started in 1906 and tongues played no role in the past 1800 years of Church History, it is a NEW doctrine taught by deceitful men for their own edification, these types of "Tongues" are found no where in Scripture or in Church History.

@Kaley2291 When you see people speaking in tongues, it is nothing more than they're emotions just taking them away, experience is not a valid test for Truth. The fact is, that it is not Biblical and God commands us to worship in Spirit and in Truth, That is neither. They are just letting their emotions take them away, and in doing so they are making themselves vulnerable to false doctrines and heresies.

@Kaley2291 Yes I have read the whole Bible, The only places that talk about speaking in tongues is Acts 2,10,19 and 1 Corinthians 14. There is no spiritual unknown language other than the FAKE counterfeit language the Corinthians were using, and in that they were cursing God by mistake because they didn't know what they were saying.(1Cor 12.3) There is no place in the Bible where people spoke in tongues other than in Acts, and the only time they're mentioned is when Paul addresses them in 1Cor14

You think that they were speaking in fake tongues? Why then, does Paul go to such lengths to explain that speaking in tongues edifies yourself (and no one else, 14:4), that he himself prays both in tongues and in his own language (14:14-15), that he speaks in tongues more than anyone else (14:18), and that speaking in tongues is not to be forbidden (14:39).
All Paul is saying is to be more orderly in church.

@Gaericon No spiritual gift is for the edification of ones own self, this directly contradicts 1 Peter 4:10, again, Paul was speaking of the the counterfit pagan tongue the Corinthians were using, and in doing so, they were calling Jesus accursed (1 Cor 12:3) I am not condemning the true gift of tongues, That is the gift of languages, I am condemning this false pagan tongue that has crept into the church during the past 100 years.

"he who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church." I Cor. 14:4. Is that clear enough for you? Do I also need to say that salvation is a spiritual gift that edifies yourself and is no use to anyone else? I Peter is not an exclusive statement, and you know it.
If you've read all the positive statements made by Paul in I Cor 14, it is impossible to reach the conclusion that it was a heretical tongue they were speaking.

The men that were speaking in Tongue's were in a spiritual setting and it was for the purpose of proclaiming Jesus Christ as Lord. And to edify The New Church Jesus was bringing to earth. @Kaley2291 If you look closely at the text, you see that every time Paul says "A Tongue" He is referring to their false pagan counterfeit tongue, When he uses it in the plural "Tongues" he is referring back to the real gift of language. If you understand this, it makes it very simple to understand. Since the gift of tongues were languages, that means there was more than one, Paul referred to the counterfeit gift as singular, since there can't be multiple languages of babble.

I can speak in tongues, but pentecostal & charismatic churches (the one you see in this video time 1:20) is DEMON manifestation... it is not of God.
Pentecostal & charismatic church buildings have it wrong for they go against 1 Co 14:23.
Yes, there is a baptism of fire, but what this video is showing is not what the Bible is talking about. The baptism of fire is a refiner's fire of trials & tribulations to sanctify you.

It is sad to see, that instead of reading and studying the bible to find out more about this important subjet that John is teaching, a lot of people prefer to close their eyes and decide to continue " speaking in tongues' based on the argument that they have seing great men of God doing so. We as christians must obey the word of God, over even our personal experience.

This video example is a poor representation.I know folks who speak in tongues & pray in tongues do it in an orderly manor.They do not race around their church, slap each other, bark like a dog or crawl on the floor If this is what you have been exposed to no wonder you feel like you do about it. Read 1 Cor. 3.....build upon the foundation....of Jesus Christ...some of you build with Gold, some w/ Silver others w/ straw, etc..yet all will be saved as
1 Cor 3 tells us.
God tells us believers to not bite at each other lest we devour each other. We are all part of one body...and if you say you Love God yet hate your brother God says you are a liar. We must judge ourselves, our motives..do we think we are better because we do or don't speak in tongues, either way you are off the mark.

I didn't feel like watching all the videos since John didn't seem to make a strong Biblical argument for his point, so I skipped to this one since you suggested it. MacArthur is again making a weak argument by pulling Old Testament passages that have nothing to do with speaking in tongues. A strange tongue in the Old Testament referred to another language the Israelites did not know It seems like MacArthur is coming to the Bible with a preconceived notion and interpreting things the way he wants

It never ceases to amaze me, that when people defend the use of tongues, they always go to "personal experience" or " my aunt did" or my "grandmother said".....never the scriptures!
This should tell you ALL you need to know about tongues as a doctrinal practise in modern times.
Even the direct disciples of Jesus himself who spoke various languages supernaturally on the day of Pentecost, didn't record another incident of tongues until more than 8 years later.

If ur taking up so much time disproving the Bible WITH the bible, and teaching ppl to divide and judge one another, and ur not loving and worshiping Jesus, then why r u a preacher? We shouldnt get together to feel like we got it right n put our noses up to ppl, we should get together to love God, thank him and praise him. I will speak in tongues because i know the Holy Spirit. If someone does not, i will worship God with them anyway. its about God not US.

If you don't believe that than answer me this where in the bible does it tell us what Jesus looks like? Also would you like someone to create a picture a picture of you that looked nothing like you and post it up in public saying this is you. Also the first commandment says no images of anything that is in heaven or earth.

so, according to this video, everyone who speaks in tongues to god, is just like these people. i dont think so. it says "i will bless with the spirit and bless with the understanding". it planly says that speaking in tongues to god, can bless god. there are so many laguages in the world, i think you can throw the baby out with the bathwater in dismissing tongues.

I don't know what else Jude 20 could be referring to if not tongues. Also, Romans 8:26 when praying in the Spirit it is less likely to be selfish as we don't know what we are praying unless we get interpretation.

I have seen and heard strong God-fearing Christians speak in tongues with my own eyes and ears. Even though I dont fully grasp it, It is done out of reverence to truly glorify God. It is biblical. BTW, fellow pastor and ahem - Calvinist - Mark Driscoll has no problem believing they're for today. Sadly, we have seen the crazy side of it, and have sterotyped it. Folks need to learn humility and to guard themselves against acquiring a Pharisee-like mentality - - we always want to be right.

Speaking in Tongues is not some spiritual language, i don't know where people get that from, it says in acts 2 that they spoke to them each in their own language. tongues in the bible was the super natural gift of speaking in worldly languages previously unknown to those speaking it for the edification of those hearing.

Yes... speaking in tongues can be speaking in other wordly language but it is can be speaking in God's language.
In this case, the believer may not have any idea what is being said unless there is an interpreter. Example: Corinthians 13:1 If I speakin in tongues of men and angels, but have not love..." It is both. :)

Paul is hypothetical in saying he can be speaking in a language of angels but without love there is no point, meaning without love there is no point in anything, he wasn't referring to the spiritual gift of Tongues.

He wasn't talking about the other spiritual gifts of prophecy and faith? Because if he wasn't talking about spiritual gifts in the first verse, it wouldn't make sense to in the second.

Firstly, I Cor 14:2-3 Anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit.
Secondly, in Acts 2, all of the people were amazed and wondered what it meant when they all heard Peter preaching in their language. In other words, it doesn't matter what language Peter was preaching; every person heard in their native tongue.

He doesn't know this teaching very well to say that tongues are only a sign to unbelievers. While it is to show the prophecy in Joel, there is more:
"For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh NOT unto men, but unto GOD: for no man understandeth him..."vs.2
The purpose:"He that speaketh in an unknown tongue EDIFIETH himself"vs.4
but.."seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.
Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret."vs. 12-3

Read your book again, the whole chapter he is chastising the church at Corinth for so much Pagan behavior. When Paul says the one speaking in an unknown tongue edifies himself, he is calling that man selfish.

If you are saying that "he that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself" as a means to speak jibberish ...that seems a little out of context. From that verse It is paul saying...if i speak a language that no one around me understands, i am only "edifiying" myself...it benefits nobody. and that doesn't make sense since God is all about loving others, not self. What good is it to speak a tongue no one else understands? especially if this gift was for unbelievers to see the supernatural

The gift of tongues was to indicate to the Jews the fulfillment of the prophecies in Joel and Isaiah about tongues. It still serves as a sign for those seeking truth regarding these prophecies.
If you read verse 2 again, it says the unknown tongue is between the speaker and God-it says NO man understandeth him (therefore it is not a tongue or language known by anybody).
Tongues are to: declare the wonders of God (Acts) 2:11, praise God 10:46, prophesy 19:6 and require interpretation in public
