it is truly mind boggling the Americans I converse with on forums who are convinced that national health care is a communist conspiracy. Canada spends a much smaller percentage of government revenue to cover 100% of Canadians. I ran into an American in Hawaii who told me his premiums are going to be 1200 a month in the near future. When I told him he's pay at most 54 a month in BC to zero if he makes 18000 or under he couldn't believe it.

I agree. A government run system would have its problems but how can anyone defend what we have at present? The insurance companies do nothing but skim off as much money as they can and do whatever they can to withhold treatment. If you don't like it you can sue them but who want's to do that when you're sick or injured? At least if it were government run you have representatives you can complain to which may or may not do any good but at least their sole motive isn't to make money.

um, we make our own pharmaceuticals here in Canada.  The government just puts a cap on how much profit the companies can take. In the US the government is 100% percent for corporations. You rob a store and go to prison for years, steal billions of dollars from Americans and get a tax payer funded bailout. I'm pretty sure the Europeans are capable of making their own medical equipment too. Pretty much the whole world has socialized health so I guess Americans subsidize the whole world?sarcasm

as I said before, the insurance companies in the US have done a wonderful job snowing most Americans into thinking that theirs is the best system in the world when it's one of the worst in the developed world. And if you don't like public health there are always private options in places like Europe and increasingly in Canada, so you have choice.

Max wants a single-payer system like the one in France. He wants the government to pay a wholesale group rate for healthcare instead of a retail rate, it is that simple. All of the actual healthcare organizations are privately owned and operated. The difference is that you will pay a discounted wholesale price for INSURANCE instead of the full retail price.

Most fire departments are socialized either directly through federal funding or from states receiving federal funds and paying it out.
