  • could you say what is the main difference if you use metal sheet or acrilic sheet? one of the disadvantage for metal sheet is only wieght and one of the disadvantage for acrilic sheet is cost ? which one do you use, you get more spot light? and also how is making parabolich dish for assembling parts? is it only flat sheet or ready parabolic sheet? please answer me as soon as possible because i am making an experience and so it is important for me there is no time for me.thanks

  • Around the end it looks like space for a second.

  • Could you mount a reflective cone and/or prism at the focal point and channel the light to a smaller diameter, maybe something the size of a pinpoint?

  • Where can i get one of these ?

  • @Zoomtronic1 I have scrapped this idea, they are way too fragile and the beam is too scattered. I was hopeful it worked. This dish is now in many pieces:-( Darn wind.

  • I have produced steam with an old 8' dish covered with sign quality reflective film. I will be posting more, but currently I have the dish facing down testing the longevity of the film. It has been out for about 6 months now in the Florida sun and the adhesive is showing no signs of degradation.

  • Why is there nothing on here as to how to get one of these?

    Jack Rickard

  • @marionrickard The acrylic for this design was too thin and produced a poor spot. Also because of the moulding process, there was little control over light scattering. We have up to 46" mirrors on our website greenpowerscience they are true shapes with great spots, just smaller. The acrylic is also thicker so they don't break easily. This mirror array is now in pieces:-(

  • Did you bought this parabolic or did you made it yourself?

  • say whatever you want but this is a cool mirror , meaning you can heat water infront of it and heat your house for free man ... you know . Make a lil water container and five of these guys on your roof and in winter time boil water and live like a king man .

  • What's this mirror's purpose? Won't it just burn up solar panels?

  • if you focus the mirror on a sterling engine (its like a steam engine) it can produce power for free.

  • @piwacket33 I think this would be used for a Solar thermal type system and not directed towards solar PV panels.

  • That thing is amazing! How long did it take to burn the stick?

  • looks kinda flimsy

  • what is the point of having this , be nice if you explained that....

  • ... You're kidding, right?

  • LOL.. yea, I know it is sad. Many just are clueless my friend. Thats the world we live in.

  • Why be so condescending? People come to forums like this and ask questions to learn - sometimes with no previous experience with these products, materials, results and possible uses.

  • Why be so condescending?

All I did was answer a question. Please take the time to read all the posts.

  • I will make this simple... People are connected to the internet, and too naive to understand what a search engine is used for?....sheesh... GOOGLE works... other people use it and learn, many others are just too simple-minded to figure it out. Case Closed.

  • The puropse is to heat water to make steam.....run a stirling engine....heat a sodium silicate to store for later use in unison with heat exchanger to make steam....

The purpose of steam..,. to create WORK.

The purpose of WORK....to generate electricity.

  • 2 square meters is the right size to make heat. I made experiment with 1 square meter and I think it is not enough in canada in winter (-30C in January).

Thin mirrors (from bathroom) cut in small pieces is very good and cheap.

The thickness of mirrors is important. It has to be thin (less loss in absorption of solar energy) more reflexion.

Do not use aluminium paper not a reflexive material.

    Take care - chris

  • 8 inch =50.63

    65 inch 3318.31

    Concentration Ratio 65.55:1

Rounded off 66:1 is good to me

  • OOPS minus the 1 foot hole in center

    113.97

    Therefore (3318.31-113.97)/50.63=

    63.3 to 1 ratio

  • Dan, Ever think about making trough sections to sell to people in 3 or 4 foot parabolic squares that bolt together? Each a half section of a 6 or 8 foot trough that can be sized as wide as the customer wishes. I think they would be easier to mold and assemble.

  • How far (ie distance) can the 8" focal point be directed at? would you be able to reflect it the focal point at a object 12' away? Is there any info on the distances that can be achieved with this dish? Thanks for any help provided .

  • Hey some of us beginners are actually very talented so don't assume what just cause we are a beginner that we won't be able to put something like this dish together! But then again I am in the construction industry and am quite handy doing many many different kinks of mechanical task! but hey some ppl are still very talented and will be able to handle a variety of tasks!!

  • :-) True

  • With a mirror that size it's probably a good idea to point it away from the sun when peeling off those coverings, otherwise you could get fried.

  • shiny!

  • Though having it modular makes more sense long term, if it ever has to be moved.

  • i want one! where can you get it?

  • Comment removed

  • I wonder if building a frame to mount that on with some screw like devices that when tightened would push out on any imperfections in curvature for even more uniformity.

  • I think that would be a great idea, this is distorted because it is just propped up. The problem with thicker acrylic is cost, there is over $600 in raw acrylic in these before work. Thicker acrylic will not works as the pieces will not fit and also too expensive.

The imperfections are from the moulding process, they are like little bumps. The mould is very rare and acrylic usually does not show the imperfections when clear but the metalizing brings it out.

  • Chrome Vacuum Metallizing using evaporated aluminum I would assume.

  • can u silver plastic with real silver like a normal mirror

  • ali is the most reflective stuff u can get other than silver :)

  • I want one !!

  • me2

  • You might consider putting fiberglass on the back to give it more structure... I like this because if you put wing nuts on the back it could be dismanted and moved. Thanks for sharing!

  • Unless I'm mistaken, acrylic scratches pretty easily if untreated. Be careful!

  • looks like a really large satellite dish:)

  • Seems to wobble as if it isnt a sturdy build or foundation. Is this just the video making it look like that or is just not going to hold up on the wind? Thanks Dan, Great Videos!!

  • Another great video my friend. What is your opinion of "Spray paint" chrome? What efficiency do you think reflective paints have?

Peace and Happy holidays to you and Denise.

  • That is a good question... about the chrome paint. I would like to see a vid of that Dan, you testing out chrome painted surface and ability to reflect/heat and object.

  • I have tried all major brands fro $8.99 krylon to $129 kkans CRAP!!!!!!

Cheap $3 silver is better than them all. this is metalized

  • Once I have seen someone trying to use chrome spray paint to make a reflective dish, but it turned out chrome paint is BARELY reflective, you can make it better if you paint it over with glossy lacquer before it dries, but it is next to impossible to do properly on large surfaces because the lacquer dissolves the paint underneath and the whole mixture starts to flow, ruining your work. And if you are still able to do it somehow, it may be worse than aluminium foil. So chrome paint=bullshit.

  • Madarpok, how do you think they get that great mirror on all the fake chrome auto parts? Guess what... ...it's chrome paint! Cheap chrome paint wont cut it, but the industry does have several products that produce great mirror finishes.

  • I do not want to bask company names but there are 2 that sell spray $129 can, black gloss silver wipe and clear. AVOID, JUST SILVER PAINT, if you look at an angle it looks mirrored but so does gloss black, CAMERA trick, customer service "please hold" NEVER returns. Called 10 times. Either they are really busy or...

The metalizing process is the only real option.

  • Guess what? That IS spray on chrome. Not by can, but a professional grade system.

  • Think he said it is electrostatic ALum in other video, I asked about other mirrors he said not paint actual metalized.

  • You may be right. The same quality mirror is also achievable with professional chrome paint systems.

  • OK, I am sure there are ways to professionally chrome paint things, but I was talking about canned "chrome paint" spray paint, which you could use at home.

  • No chrome paint works, I tried a $129 three part, terrible, demo video looks like a mirror, camera trick, avoid spray paints. This is metalized

  • Yes, this is metalized, the spray stuff, even the distilled water wipe is not a good mirror.

  • I have tried all major brands from $8.99 krylon to $129 kkans CRAP!!!!!!

Cheap $3 silver is better than them all, still not solar worthy . this is metalized.

  • :-) Happy Holidays to you, Thank you.

  • I was wondering if you would have a steel or aluminium dish, you could electroplate chromium onto it. You would need to plate copper, then nickel and finally chromium onto the dish. But I think it would be hard to do do it uniformly, and you would also need a lot of Cu/Ni/Cr solutions, and nickel would be particularly hard to come by.

  • do you think a home thorium reactor is possible? supposedly the needed piping uses all industrial parts.

  • Home version:-)

  • Dan -you keep making 'em bigger and you'll open up a wormhole soon!

Love your channel - greets from Australia. Check out my new VAWT video please.
