im currently learning how to play this, its my first time playing the oboe i usualy play the clarinet im very good at it and now im looking for some thing thats more of a challenge and these videos are a very big help so if you can continue to post these up that would be great, once im able to here a note and how its sounds i can play it so plzzzzzz post more videos ur really good btw
Quick! I need to learn oboe for my schools production of Seussical! Any tips?? I'm also playing clarinet and bass clarinet in the show... Yeah were a little short on woodwinds...
Hey do u have any videos on high notes and really low oct. Notes,, i know how to play alittle alto sax, soprano sax and flute but my main instrument is clarinet and im trying to learn oboe. Im a fast learner so do u mind making the videos alittle longer with more notes. Cause i knew this already. ^_^
i found this video really helpful! i just got my oboe a couple days ago so i dont really know what i am doing but can you make anyother video of more notes to learn. when i look online for ones they are so confusing. my mom saids no lessons untill i know more. please help!!???!?!?!?!
hi,,,,I'm switching from sax to oboe, i know somewhat of flute... I'm going to be a senior next year in wind ensemble do you think i should have this instrument down by concert season? I'm a pretty fast learner...
Also, don't get the mentality of giving up your native instrument. When I learned the tenor, I sucked, and I realized I should've just stuck to the oboe and english horn, which I barely made all region on due to this. Being tri-instrumental isn't easy, and in your case, I would just suggest playing the sax, since it is a single reed, similar to the clarinet, not the oboe. The oboe would just take too long to learn, especially for concert band...
I've heard of an Oboe player switching to tenor sax or clarinet (that's what I did) but not the other way around. It will probably screw up your embochure and fingerings. All of the habits you're used to will have to be broken, for example, some clarinets don't tongue. You can't get away with that on the oboe. I'm sure it's possible to switch, just look at the video, but don't make the common mistake of assuming the clarinet and oboe are similar to play just because of looks.
heyy. i love music so im always learning new instruments on my own. ive played flute since fifth grade and now im a freshman in high school. i tought myself sax last year with youtube videos and i wasnt that hard. so im learning the oboe on my own. do you have any tips for me??
Has anyone had issues with cracking their reed when tounging? I heard about it online,'I'm just sarting and I don't wanna be cracking reeds which are so expensive
my band teacher just got an oboe and she said that i could try to play it. i am on the clarient, and i really want to play the sax, do you think i could play both an oboe and a sax for band and jazz band?
That was a very useful video-- I'm a flute player and I've been playing for like 6 years now, but I also want to learn oboe. Any Suggestions for my embouchure? thanks :)
Thanks for this and the other video. I'm playing an Oboe for my school's spring concert, so I am researching the instrument. Thanks to you, I already have 4 fingerings down :) Any tips for a 9th grade beginner? (I'm switching from clarinet, by the way.)
I love oboes and their sound.. I'm thinking about borrorwing an oboe from school and I'm playing the clarinet. What should I know about the embouchure?
@Preapoka I play clarinet right now im switching to obeo now :) i use to play bassoon and they have the same reed just diff. sizes......its a pretty easy transition in embouchure. i say its prob. easier to keep ur embouchure
I love oboes and their sound.. I'm thinking about borrorwing an oboe from school and I'm playing the clarinet. What should I know about the embouchure.
So I've been playing Clarinet, Flute and Saxophone for the past 3 years, would you say that going to the oboe would be a difficult transition such as the embouchure and the fingerings, or are most of the fingerings like the flute and sax?? because in the next few weeks im going to start learning it.. any tips??
I have never played any sort of musical instrument at all. I am a total music novice but while listening a music competition where someone played the oboe, I felt drawn to the instrument. What would you recommend..should I start with the oboe or clarinet? I see that many people mention starting with the clarinet... or what advice would you give me?
I've played bassoon for a few years, and this summer my goal is to learn oboe as well. So i was wondering how similar bassoon and oboe are to each other in terms of playing?
Ok, so I play Clarinet really well, and all three saxes pretty decently. I'm getting an oboe in 2 days or less. My teacher is confident that I'll pick it up as quick as I did the saxes (overnight), but I'm not so sure about that. Any advice before I start? Do I need a tight or loose embouchure? Is it more similar to the clarinet or sax? Thanks
I dont get the Embouchure, you hold you lips really far back like playing a really high note on a brass, then you shut your moth closed with your teeth touching, then the reed goes between your two lips? =/
thankies! oboe is so much fun to play i can already play b flat scale mostly thanks to flute b/c i played that for 8 yrs and there are similar fingerings
@Babbit93 i play flute to i've been playing for eight years as well i hope i can get my own oboe that would be awsome im learning it in my music class
oboes sound like ducks :) quack quack....so do clarinets sometimes:)... thats why i play bass clarinet, it sounds like a bigger duck when you squeek xD
@GlossyMenthaShine Haha yeah, today I just started playing oboe in band class and when I first got a sound out of it, my friend excitedly shouted "IT SOUNDS LIKE A DUCK!"
@decimal495 That happened to me when I started in sixth grade. Now if anyone says that, I flip out. lol, temper problems come with double reed instruments... JKLOL That's a stereotype! Kinda... But I'm in ninth grade (started in sixth grade), and now I don't sound like a duck. You'll randomly wake up one day and be good, and I'm not even kidding! XD
@GlossyMenthaShine Wow! You totaly missed the whole purpose of music. It doesn't even sound like your passionate about music. It sounds like playing an instrument to you is just something to do when your bored. Why even play an instrument with an attitude like that.
i need help. i went to the store & i didn't realize that they gave me a hard reed. i just started today. can you help me? my mom won't spend more money to get a new reed. i think my head is going to explode off my body.
thanks for replying...do you apply pressure to the reed with you lips or are you just letting the reed go free....i can get some cool vibratoes when i mess with the pressure but i dont think its right...i actually tried shaving the reed thinner and it helped though i still get cut out notes...and still pretty much blowing a nut everything i play...you have any experiance playing a bombard?
i just picked up a bombard and its also a double reed. first time using a reeded instrument so i was wondering is it suppose to be really hard to get the noise out of the reed. it seems like i am working way to hard to get notes. i soaked the reed in water and let it dry and then i wet it again and try using it and it is just way too hard to get the notes. is there some kidn of trick to it ? i go to play a tune and i get through one riff and my head almost explodes due to the pressure lol
There is a bit of a trick to it. When i first started out with my double reed instrument, i felt like my head was going to blow right off my head. The trick is to keep your back straight when you blow into the reed. Fold your lips over your teeth, and place it right in the middle of your bottom lip. Make sure that you soak the reed in warm water for at least 1-2 minutes. Try not to ever exceed more than three minutes(it messes up the reed.) Good luck(:
what is my oboe model ?il has 4 metal keys for the left little finger...( 5 on most oboes fotos). 3 keys for the right little finger..right hands rings looks like clarinet- left keys look like oboe.. it has a octave key -can i play a 3rd space C with a flute fingering?
Hello i am getting an oboe in about a week and are switching from trumpet ( i teach myself these things) and band director says i progress faster than normal people musically. Are there any tips i should know??
yeah you have a lot of work ahead of you. Good luck, watch my two vids and if you still have questions PM me. Personally I would switch to clarinet before trying oboe (it was a tough enough for me and I specialize in woodwinds)
@InstrumentManiac Your treble clef is drawn wrong ;p If you take any kind of music theory/composition class in college they will mark it wrong if its that sloppy, or the curves dont cross the write lines. The treble clef is also known as the G cleff.
only on a thumblate system (common in the UK but nowhere else really). so the real answer is no...not on the most common system of oboe (which most of us play on).
E, G, Ab, A, B are the same and the low D is the same...there are some similarities but some really different things (C is 1 and 1 and Bb is 1 and 1 2). Its best to check in with an oboist...they can teach you :)
@OoMrBenoO The clefs formed from the original letter name they had and the treble clef is called a G clef. The infamous shape formed from the letter G and curls around the 2nd line which is therefore the note G. Same for the bass clef (letter F), the dots, formed from the two horizontal lines in the capital F, are around the 4th line which is the note F.
