As a bassist, I agree. BUT I'd also point out that some of the most fun stuff, that gets people dancing in their seats is also very, very simple. Complex or hard does not by itself make for something musically interesting or fun to listen to. I also love the octave slap, but I also am kinda shitty :p

Classic example of when a bass player should groove slowly. Technique is fantastic however it just sounds really really cluttered all together. All for show of course. its more awe inspiring when bass players play a solid groove then add something incredible every now and again. Like Victor Wooten for example.
