Thanks for your comment. Reference a standard text on the war; "Battle Tactics of the Civil War" by Paddy Griffith, as well as a newer study :"The Rifle Musket in Civil War Combat" by Earl J. Hess, I think you will find that you are mistaken.
whats with all these videos about regiments firing by file in the civil war? rarely if ever happened. Regiments were ordered to fire a volley or 2, then fire at will.
The first Texas suffered heavily at Antietam. in fact it was virtually destroyed as they under Gen hood's division under Jackson' corps fought to drive attacking union troops in the cornfield. Around 90% casualties. Very brave and determined men from the Lone star State.
You take the pale and gaunt comment out of context, but for fun in Reductio ad absurdum lets use your own criteria lean suntanned and fit on minimal rations. As they would call it "deprivations." Granted they were a hardcore breed but on "minimal rations and marching miles a day in bare feet and on minimal rations" do you think they would get better or worse over time. The evolutionist would say better the physicist would say worse. What do you say. I say they would wear down and did.
Lets face it to reenact takes money. If we were going for non-middle aged men there would not be any reenacting. Teenagers and 20 somethings made up the common soldier. Those in that age bracket would not have the time nor money today to dedicate to such an expensive hobby and if they are in any kind of uniform it is a current U.S. military uniform. Yes there are younger reenactors, however, that is because of their middle aged fathers who are not fit 18 year old kids anymore.
Once again the incredible assertion that modern reenactors must fit into a past that is far removed form our current world. I agree we are a society that is overweight and could shed some pounds, however, we do not live in an agrarian society where what we eat is easily shed. Nor is what we eat actually healthy. Need I say processed foods. Give it a rest your assertion does not fit reality. We men today have real jobs and real lives reenacting is an exercise in honor and a hobby.
General hoods texans were young and fit - these lot look like a weight watchers club on an outing! how sad! lets all pretend we arent over eaters and we are real men! and afterwards we can all sit down and have another big feed to celebrate the battle....
Great video. Antietam is an awesome place and I highly recommend it to anyone. Best to read about it before going so as to know the order of battle and how the battle progressed. I had an eerie feeling while I was there. I stood in places where bodies had been stacked upon each other. Gettysburg was an equally impressive tour.
Well fed rebs? Once again the underwhelming thought process of the less than criticle critic. I wish someone would explain to me how stating the obvious (that reenacters are real people who are well fed members of the land of plenty) somehow think that when they put on their wool they should somehow immediately become pale and gaunt. Give it a rest it is neither funny nor a well thought out premise. Save your brain power for a more meaningful pursuit ie. how can I get my garbage to the curb
thats total rubbish - the confederate soldiers werent pale and gaunt - they were lean, suntanned and fit! They could march miles in a day in bare feet and on minimal rations. Also they were young. These re-enactments and the films such as gettysburg and gods and generals make a huge mistake in casting fat middle aged men who look utterly ridiculous waddling around with their fat arses and big bellies. its an insult to the memory of these heroic young men.
And furthermore the young men who fought and died on both sides would be appalled to know that their efforts had created a society of the fat and lazy. its not a case of well fed here but over fed. real people they may be but this raises a more profound point about how modern society has lost its way - middle aged men puffing and groaning in period uniforms before sitting down to another round of pizza and cake - utterly repulsive. these bloated oafs wouldnt last 10 seconds on a battlefield.
As you can see from this and my other Antietam videos, living history groups provide the bulk of costumed interpretation at Antietam National Battlefield and are considered a valuable educational asset by the park staff.
Not sure what you mean about any Papal dispensation, maybe that's in Virginia.
Is it true that reenactment groups need what amounts to be special dispensation from the Pope...I mean National Parks Service...to do any kind of demonstrations or drilling on the actual battlefields? Have those rules been loosened in the last ten years?
actually during fire by file you fire by file once then its independent fire because it takes too long to reload and tire by file again... it is much more efficient to go into independent to keep the pressure on
what about the 6th WI

The 1st Texas fought so hard and so well at
Antietam, that even the Union soldiers, who fought
against them, boasted that they had "faced the
fiercest fighters of Lee's Army"
Indeed the Texas Brigade were known for their
bravery and fearless style of fighting.

We are still fighting for our Homeland, because it is OUR Homeland.
It ain't never belonged to no Yankee, and it never will.
No matter what it takes, we will be Free.
For the sake of our Children, we must be Free of the Federal Beast!
