It's funny that everyone begins with simple understandings; and (if and ) when you examine things further you discover a intricate seemingly convoluted truth; that can make your earlier perceptions almost a bundle of prepackged lies.
Despite what most British may want to believe due to nationalistic pride, Tim Berniers Lee did not invent TCP/Internet Protocol nor did he invent hypertext. Two Americans by the name of Vinton Cerf and Robert Kahn invented the internet in 1973. Tim Berniers Lee merely built upon what the U.S Defense Department was using-- ARPANET.
Granted, Tim Berniers Lee at CERN did invent the World Wide Web in 1991, but it was a lousy attempt to take credit for something he never invented, the internet.
The World Wide Web and the Internet are two totally different things. If you're curious to see how the Internet was invented, there are great, riveting videos that'll blow you away. The story behind the birth of the Internet is fascinating. Type Leonard Kleinrock into the YouTube search box and you'll find the videos. And don't be scared when you hear the words "packet switching"...Kleinrock does a wonderful job of explaining complex things that a dumb ditch digger like me can understand.
CERN didn't invented the Internet...it was DARPA the one that did it...and CERN, actually a guy called Tim Berners-Lee, invented the World Wide Web... cause...it was hard for scientists to share information...so they needed to find I way to do it. If u want more specific info. use google... by the way....if u do so...u will use both the Internet...and the web :-D... (web is an Internet service not the Internet itself)
i actively use lynx for server if need to google something. i mean find out how to use dmraid in a kernel 2.6 distro whitout using lynx just a pain in the ass ;)

Typical American comment! I guess you dont give Alan Turing or Ada Lovelace any credit either, simply because they aren't American
