I do not think that artists like Leschenko was allowed to be played in USSR of 1930s but tango - yes, of course

tango was popular in Europe of 1930s and as a genre was not banned in USSR, what I referred to were White Russian emigrees.

many popular composers in Poland of 1920-30s found themselves in Soviet Union in 1939 among them Jerzy Petersburski - do you know his tango "Donna Clara"?

That's not a mandolin in that picture. That's a Russian instrument called balalaika; please note its triangular shape and its three strings.

Your correction is happily accepted! I did a further check on the balalaika and learned that some have six strings in three pairs. I will study more on the balalaika in the near future. So now I say I like both the mandolin and the balalaika! :)
