@DARRINCONNOR1 No, they had definitely friends. Multiple shows and a few tours together. Mind you they weren't the closest friends in the world. Kind of like Layne and Kurt Cobain or Eddie and Kurt.
@droge085 Yeah do you have any exact info on Laynes and Kurts relationship. I love Nirvana ov course. But there is so much info (books, movies, documentarys etc.) on Kurts legacy. But wat is there on Layne?? 1 half ass book that is out ov print and impossible to find. And Layne is so special to me hes one ov the few people I am so fascinated with, I actually want to no about his childhood, wat he was like as a kid. He had such a great sense ov humor, and was so funny. And he died so fuking lonely.SAD
@DARRINCONNOR1 I should correct myself. They were closer with each other than either were with Kurt. All I have are interviews. Google Layne Staley interview Kurt Cobain and see what you get. They definitely knew each other and had some sort of relationship. And surprisingly Kurt was an AiC fan.
And usually, if you use the "go ahead and do it" on someone, they dont want to do it so bad anymore. but fuck it. using someone elses origonal trade mark only proves that you have nothing special of your own to offer.
agreed: definitely a form of venting. BUT i dont feel is was neccessarily sarcastic. i think although eddie hated that people would immitate laynes style, he was aware that he couldnt reverse that people had done it, and his anger was saying: "seriously do it. he's dead so it doesnt matter now does it?" in the manner that would make everyone guilty of this feel, well, guilty.
Was at my boys wrestling tourney waiting outside at the seating area to see who he's wrestling, sun was out....then a little rain for no reason why....2 wks later I hear the news and realized exactly why it rained....I'll never forget that day...RIP Layne Staley
Ok, Alice in chains and Metallica are and we're good friends, Years after that metallica was sitting front row @ aic unplugged the bassist had on his guitar, Friends don't let friends cut there hair! lol

5 minutes ago, I found an article on google, and I read it. It was Layne's last interview. He had missing teeth from all of the drugs. And he was saying he knew he was gonna die. He wanted to die. He said that Alice in Chains weren't his friends. Can you believe that? I was crying when I finished reading it.
I love Eddie and it was such a tribute to Layne. I never forget that sad sad day. I was in college in the Seattle area this time and I had a hard time getting home. I had no clue what was going on until I got home to see Layne had passed away. My mouth dropped to the floor couldn't believe such a beautiful man was gone. He is forever in our hearts and our minds. I just wish he was still here today he was such a sweet man but gone way to soon.
This is a great song. Very sad though, kinda hear the pain and emotion from Eddies voice in this song. Just about makes me cry. Love you Layne RIP!!!!
I was rehearsing at a studio in Castro Valley Ca, & there was this redneck band that would try to do AIC cover songs & it just sounded horrible ... I wanted to know why it was so far from what Layne was doing ... That's when I began to study all his influences, Billie Holiday, Son House, Lemmy, Robert Plant etc... Basically it comes down to an understanding of Jazz phrasing & intonation, he was basically & very primal & powerful Jazz singer, it would've been cool to hear him with a real jazz....
I live in the East Bay & when I go to Gilman St. it is just a shameful, shameful thing happening, these kids have no idea about the spirit of punk rock, what they do know how to do is imitate the "fashion" & outward appearance of it ... just shameful ...@herbman3000
@herbman3000 good it means a lot personally when i hear someone younger say this,it gives me hope that music and a culture i lived and loved will not die so quickly,as it was on the edge and still is from being forgotten the punk era the 90s era its good to here some have not forgotten and that they get it.
@herbman3000 actually i checked out your profile to see your age ,i was going to aic shows before you were a thought,no its not sarcasm its fact, thats why mike star quit the band, its a shame they would dishonor Layne and his memory and his work by trying to find someone who would sound like him, because they cant make it on their own ,and dont give me any childish thoughts about what you thinks is right or wrong, ive been threw the 80s and 90s music scene kids today are posers.
I don't even bother trying to explain it to these kid's, the feelin' of what was going on at that time, I just feel sorry for what they have now & their perceived "lack of power" some are really intelligent & attempting to start their own scenes & what-not but the allure of some fake a#@ fame & fortune is just too strong & pervasive in the culture ... Sad ...@666Angelfuck
i have always felt that eddie, in a sarcastic way, was telling all the singers who were immitating layne's vocal style at the time that it didn't really matter, because layne was gone. i think he was just exasperated with people trying to copy layne and was letting off steam after his death. i respect eddie a lot for paying his respects to his fellow deceased musicians like that. (layne, kurt cobain, sahnnon hoon..etc.) keep rockin' eddie and R.I.P. layne
@jeffsaddiction Eddie paid his respects to Shannon while he was still alive. The Pearl Jam song "Bee Girl" is about how Eddie wants Shannon to stop doing drugs before he kills himself. The title is a reference to the "bee girl" in the Blind Melon video for "No Rain".
@tylerebill He's talking to the rock singers of the later 90's mostly. like Godsmack for example. Though not all singers tried to replicate, you can tell who did when you focus on the similarities.
@tylerebill I believe he's talking about Metallica. Metallica and AIC were on tour together and AIC had to cancel due to Layne's problem with drugs. They would start singing an AIC song and would mock Layne acting like they were shooting up. People in the audience threw their shoes at them. I believe Vedder is saying - go ahead and sing like him and mock him, he won't care, he's dead, but you're offending me.

@awwwsnapitsviki Yeah, man. Metallica really shit on Layne. I for one have never done drugs, but I fully respect people that have addictions, yet are good people. Just because someone has a drug problem, it gives people no right to judge. None of us know what they have been through. Never judge. RIP Layne and all those who have lost their battles with narcotics.
@rokkr123456789 Metallica had their own damn problems with drugs... Hetfield hit rehab a year or so after layne died, I thought. I didn't think it was just metallica though. I hear alot of people who rip off other's vocal styles and get famous doing it. Every other vocalist these days sounds like Chris Cornell, that jackoff from Five Finger Death Punch sounds like Ben Burnley. So many people can't be original anymore, it's just sad, the way music's gone in the last ten or fifteen years.
its sad that good music died with layne pretty much. some good bands out there like alter bridge and breaking benjam but other then that =( he was awesome RIP
You don't need a book to know about the life of Layne Staley. All you need to do is listen to his music.
