nice stick the antenna on a small metal box and run a length of wire for it to work against on the floor saves the 817 and less hand capacitance

Did you receive "cappelle" with this antenna?
1/4 lambda antenna needs ground plane!

tgh: if light & held still it could be OK. Centre or top loading would be far more efficient but would have even more stress. Best solution is to use rear socket and have metal frame or cradle to support FT-817 & antenna.
