If I was home alone and I was taking out the trash or something like that, and heard that noise at 12:00 at night I would drop the trash run back into the house as quick as possible, close & lock the windows, lock the doors, close the blinds, turn on all the lights and turn on the TV / radio (to block out the screaming.) I am sorry to say that is a White Tailed Deer that is probably hurt because one was hit by a car near us and ran into the woods and that is what the poor thing sounded like till it died. so very sad.... I called the police to come shoot it and they were too scared of the sound to even go into the woods to shoot it. I felt so bad for it.

That, my friend, is the sound of a fox. It is probably sick or injured. I Once had to shoot a rabid fox that approached my house in broad daylight making very nearly the same sound. I heard a strange, creepy sound I couldn't identify. I grabbed my Blunderbuss (an old single shot 10 guage shotgun), made the kids come in the house and went looking for it. It made no attempt to run away when I found it. It was obvious it was rabid. But I still didn't shoot til it made the same sound, 10 feet away.
