  • 16:54 - 17:28 : What a load of bullshit! Jimmy Wales is a complete idiot.

  • It is actually very easy to spread bias on WP, specially on less known subjects. Even more when you have a group of users sharing same POV. What all this documentaries do wrong, is by picking George Bush or Nasser Arafat as exemple to introduce an error, as those articles are very much monitored by numerous editors, but try inserting an error in mediaval Kingdom of Duklja, and will stay there for weeks. However a person searching info on that specific topic will easily be mislead.

  • u mad

  • Did you know that Israel has a propaganda agency that posts stuff on wikipedia and other websites?

  • This commentary is a blast. Larry Sanders seems unusually awkward and did not understand Wikipedia. Andrew Keen's "anti-democratic and anti-freedom" is absurd considering his support for gatekeepers and use of authority to suppress the contributions of the masses.

It all seems like a satire of the Anti-Wikipedia arguments, while pointing out the potential flaws of open-source knowledge-base. One thing omitted in all of this is how fast Wikipedia dispenses knowledge.

  • Those Anti-internet words remind me to the church in middle ages!

Yes, there are some uneducated people who are much more educated than many scholars.

I wonder how they want kids just to listen to the teachers - it will mostly make a copy of the teachers who might be very wrong.

They sometimes forget that Nobody on this earth knows the whole Truth!

  • the truth is a collective. some find this evolutionary, and some find this scary

  • Too much tossing around of the word "truth" - Wikipedia is about verifiability, not truth. That's why Wikipedia can and should include articles for say, both Creationism and Evolution, despite widespread disagreement over which is true. An encyclopedia should introduce one to the "lay of the land" for the store of knowledge on a given subject matter. To do so it should uphold verify that claims are published in reliable sources. Verifiability is indeed 1 of Wikipedia's 3 core content policies.

  • I'm sure he's well aware of the irony, and is simply using it to further show as example material....

  • For sympathizing with "the leftist ethic", Mr. Keen sure likes class distinctions. I thought one of the social reforms leftists supported was a leveling out of power structures like universities and other institutions which block people from entering them if they didn't have enough money.

  • @dougalsii I just paid my friend 5 bucks to say dougalsii is a douchebag on a wikipedia article and make sure it was brought up again if someone deleted it

I told him to say that noobler wasn't such a bad guy now with the money microsoft has what can it do along the same lines ;)

    be caaaaaaaaaaarefuuuuuulllll

  • @dougalsii lol r u retarted. Keen is talking about people like you who put their ideas on the internet and other believe they are true. You should only comment if you are alomost certain they are true. Pretty much everyone in developed countries can go to university if they get the grades. Its only America thats different. Remember that the U.S is definitly not the rest of the world

  • @chillercm Are you saying the left (and I mean the far left, not moderate social democrats) would not support less authoritative institutions which were completely free? Was the push-back against the Bologna reforms and other recent measures not because the decisions were made largely without consulting the students? Grades are often subjective and correlate with parents' income. I said nothing about my own beliefs except what I believe the left believes and whether or not Keen is a sympathizer.

  • @dougalsii read what I wrote the U.S is NOT the rest of the world. u guys are mad to even consider paying close what is it 25k a year on college? leftists would of course abolish private unis and make tuition free. grades might correlate with parents income, but that might have more to do with the fact that smarter people tend to have higher paying jobs and produce smarter offspring than others...what does all of this have to do with keen and wikipedia???

  • @chillercm Yes, tuition prices in the U.S. are ridiculous. That's why, after having done my Bachelor's in the U.S. and paying about 19k per semester at a cheaper state university, I'm currently doing my MA in translation in Heidelberg for only €500 per semester plus some administrative fees.

I was just bothered by him implying he speaks for the left when I don't believe he does. This is the essence of my comment. I don't mean to comment on the documentary as a whole.

  • @dougalsii I dont think he was really arguing for the left, I think more so against it. At least at the end of the documentary it seems so...Heidelberg is cool, I live in frankfurt. Its probably a far more presitgious uni than the one where u paid 19k, but I hear the facilites arent as good in Germany, would you agree? Im currently studying in Maastricht but thinking of switching to Berlin...its funny how Germans actually protest against that 500euro fee, but I guess it keeps it down.

  • @chillercm Berlin's great! I was at the FU in Berlin as my semester abroad, but in a program for Amer. exchange students. They had us far away from the regular students, so I didn't see much of the campus. But what I saw was nice. At the uni in Heidelberg, the WLAN and computer rooms are horrible. Classes vary depending on the field of study, but are mostly very good. Universities in the US waste a lot of the money on fancy architecture and landscaping to market them to potential students.

  • This argument is hilarious. Point 1: No two experts will agree on everything, and any disagreement on subject matter must be resolved in the same manner any disagreement on Wikipedia is resolved. Through intellectual debate.

Point 2: Darwinian Theory applies to ideas as well as genes. Only in isolation does truth become a victim.

Point 3: Education can also be indoctrination. Experts are often chronically indoctrinated.

    Long live Wikipedia

  • Simply swallowing info off wikipedia is bad, looking at the references at the bottom of wikipedia articles is good. But what if you just took the information that had a little citation reference number after it, ignoring the paragraphs that didn't? Is that almost as good as looking at the actually sources or just a little better then just taking whatever info in an article?

btw, what about articles on something are NOT topics of differing views and myths, like "kangaroo rat" or "anti-coagulant

  • This documentary doesn’t sufficiently approach the problem that Wikipedia is infiltrated by specific interests! I have noticed the problem in everything about 911, vaccines and other pharmaceutical products! Here is one example of a specific interest group (Zionists) admitting their concerted efforts to shape reality in their image: /watch?v=sLinRHhPxvA

I have stopped contributing to Wikipedia pending the creation of a democratic Concurrent Version Wiki!

  • Comment removed

  • universal truth isnt measured in mass appeal

  • "Absolute certainty is a privilege of uneducated minds and fanatics." C.J. Keyser

  • it hasn't helped undemocratic countries like Britain!!!

  • "What about the languages of the developing world" as Deutsch (German) and Italiano (Italian) crop up in the background.

  • wikipedia is BS sometimes but the benefits outwiegh that

  • Do you know that Mediaset newscast (Berlusconi Broadcasting company) constantly shows reportages which tell how Wikipedia is unreliable???

  • Wikipedia should keep all the revisions made by users so we the readers can compare and browse all the revisions on one particular article previously revised either by experts or amateurs. Also there is the star system where everyone can rate which revision is best so the best rated revisions will be highly visible on the front of the page, the other revisions are as tabs. This will make Wikipedia thoroughly trusted source and more democratic.

  • Wikipedia is doomed for not having concurrent version capabilities! The right of the stronger (Administrator) rules. There is no functional democratic process. I can point out countless examples of fascist propaganda manipulation on Wikipedia! I want a system were valuable dissenting Information is given due respect! Only then is Wikipedia a tool for progress!

  • @usertogo agreed, i think wiki has been hijacked and you cant trust many of the articles.

  • @usertogo They should get rid of HTML because how can a person write 8 lines of code for one referrence? My gosh.

  • @usertogo can you show me a few examples of fascist propaganda manipulation on Wikipedia please?

  • I love gatekeeper and I like Wikipedia, Wikipedia is soo easy and gatekeeper has BIG knowlwedge!

No Wiki or Twitter can beat mass-media in term of shere size of knowledge outputed per day, in Wiki; you heard it from media first before it appears in Wiki.

Wikipedia actually depended on mass-media for citation, I get more fun stuff from mass-media.

  • i love wiki but hate this bullsit documentary.so dont loose time here(girls can)

  • no mention of linux! no mention of wikileaks! = shit documentary. fuck this web 2.0 buzzword crap

  • 46:07

  • 22:58

  • Sure, in a perfect world it would be great to give everyone a voice. But, in the real world, most people are stupid and really shouldn't be heard.

  • Thinking about this matter should make people understand that truth does not exist and that whoever says the opposite is just trying to manipulate you.

Even what I said now is not to be taken as given.

  • Yes! Please give Chris Pirillo CREDIT!!!

  • Gatekeepers are corrupt, and Wikipedia is unfortunately no exception.

    Time for Wikipedia 2.0?

  • the foo in the black is already fragmented , Self centered fuk

  • Wikipedia is increasingly becoming a closed community that is agenda driven by the few who have been given the key. Much like the natural evolution of all great democracies. Articles that should present as fair and balanced are more and more one sided.

  • It is true that anyone can change the content of an article but in 99% Wikipedia does represents the views of those who are organized.

NGO's Lobby-groups, government organizations etc. are the prime editors, because the average person just doesn't have the time

  • Wikipedia should not be a place for anonymity. Anyone contributing should be willing to use their full name and other personal information. Editing should not be done unless there's a consensus by others involved to propose edit is accurate. Has been there is no democracy in science& education, but certainly there is to insure what is closest to the truth as possible is told for fact..

  • Sure the web has it's problems, but the root problem is people as in every thing else.. Gate keepers are those who want content to go through them so they can extract a profit via control without adding any value. They may have added convenience, but that's slipping away, so they are fearful. Odd they fear t community that aldo espouse. I guess they don't like community that's not for profit oriented.. Yea I know I ramble.

  • The amount of people using computers now - in homes @ work, etc. is millions and millions more people - young and old - compared to web 1.0 - I grew up during 1.0 and only a handful of people were using say, early AOL or even email when I first started. The amont of users is a big part of it - not just the advancement of technology and the web.

  • haha look at chris parillos army of dorks

  • Chris Pirillo is such a dork. whats with all the dorks who arent smart enough to be developers who pretend to 'represent' technologists.

  • Frankly, I think a lot of problems begin when blowhard who have nothing to say, have a public avenue to spew their nonsensical gibberish. Case in point, the Quran burning pastor? That would have been one nut in Florida had it not been for web 2.0.

  • Oh the irony of him using the internet to spread his idea...

  • @GMAlekz As far as I know, this youtube documentary was needed for ajustment of the interviewed people. The dutch television program "Tegenlicht" is used to spread his idea, this youtube fragment is just collateral information, no intensional use IMO.

  • @GMAlekz it is far more ironic that the web 2.0 gurus organise meetings, public speeches and use blackboards to spread their beliefs...

  • GIVE CHRIS PIRILLO CREDIT!

  • Give chris pirillo credit!!!

  • I can write a book. Does that make me trustworthy?

  • Wikipedia LIES, JUST LIKE BIG MEDIA!

  • @911truthseekers

    Wikipedia lies?

Did you even watch the video? Who the hell is wikipedia xD

  • @peanutchannel they are Zionist... Period the end.

  • @911truthseekers Apparently you used it. That makes you a part of Wikipedia and by you're own definition a Zionist..

    Seriously, watch the video again

  • Zet ff wat bron vermeldling voor chriss prillo man. Stelletje malloten

  • Andrew Keen is ridiculous, the internet knowledge, democracy and true globalization allows the true survival of the fittest and not the survival of the richest which was the paradigm until the internet reality, i'm not speaking in the specific case of wiki but in general

In wikipedia, the so called experts or scholars should participate more and wikipedia could have a system to recognize their expertise and by doing that, what they write needs to be confronted in order to be changed, imo

  • Give Chris Pirillo CREDIT!!

  • @joeylantis22 I would not be surprised if joeylantis22, zalien6, Thyrthlord et al are all the same unemployed individual living in his mother's basement. Wikipedia "contributors" are much the same way. You try to correct an error on wikipedia, and one of these individuals will create a false consensus by using multiple user ID's to outvote your correction. Hence they have much free time. As the saying goes, "the devil makes work for idle hands."

  • @joeylantis22

    why

  • @TENNSUMITSUMA The Guy at the Start is Chris Pirillo And they just stole a video from his website without giving him credit for it.

  • give Chris Pirillo CREDIT !

  • GIVE CREDIT NOW TO CHRIS PRILLO!!!!!

  • So why didn't you give Chris Pirillo credit?

  • you didn't give Chris Pirillo credit!!!!!

  • YAY CHRIS PIRILLO!! great guy.

  • besides the truth is totally not related to the source the truth solely depends in one thing, the truth itself if something is a lie or not, it doesn't depend in who is the speaker

  • The guy in red (against wikipedia) sounds a lot like Darth Vader.

  • 4:07 ha ha the "Web era"? As if there is no more web. ha ha ha and 4:31 "the .com era"? Yes, not like we have .com's these days. ha ha ha ha

  • I'd rather take a hard copy of the encyclopedia britannica than Wikipedia any day. There is a fallacy that a "majority" of people are always right and that is what Wiki is based on. Also it takes a well trained schollar to quote and specially paraphrase correctly. I'd rather listen to a small group of well trained specialists than millions of untrained persons updating wikipedia every two seconds. Faster, Quicker, and Electronic doesn't necessarily mean "correct".

  • I find it highly, *highly* ironic and amusing that Andrew Keen doesn't even understand that Ayn Rand is NOT a libertarian, that he doesn't understand the clear difference between her objectivism and libertarianism, that he in fact at no point even vaguely hints at even remotely understanding libertarianism (but does chose to use it in calling his enemy names) and that he doesn't understand that the dichotomy between the "hippies 60s" and the "new left 60s" is flagrant bullshit. Fucking AMATEUR.

  • Andrew Keen.. what the heck is this man even speaking of? His own words fight each other, so it is laughable. He should take down the throttle some bits and try to give constructive critique of Web 2.0 unto us that is actually useful. But of course, since he is an expert, we must listen carefully to his truth and simply take it as it is, and it is not open to a form of reasonable public debate.

  • The "experts" who speak against wikipedia and the internet are just upset that their ivory towers are no more. Information is finally available to the common person.

Do not be fooled, these are the same kind of people who looked down upon such events as the invention of the printing press.

  • @GPEGEMGTM3 "The "experts" who speak against wikipedia & the internet are just upset their ivory towers are no more. Information is finally available to the common person." Information has always been available to the "common person." It's called a library. And what are the sources of information for the wikipediots? The same academic scholars whom you enjoy deriding. There is no substitute for careful scholarship. You have to put in your time. No substitute. Sorry. Your hatred notwithstanding.

  • @GPEGEMGTM3 yes you got the information, now its up to you how you keep it,coz what the developers want they good it. The pure knowledge, but what ppl are doing, editing it and making all the info impure.

  • The new layout of Wikipedia is bad! Why do all these sites this sh**? Youtube sucks with the BETA and the new channels! Thank god the German Wikipedia page has the old layout (yet?)!

  • The new layout of Wikipedia is bad! Why do all these sites this sh**? Youtube sucks with the BETA and the new channels! Thank god the German Wikipedia page has the old layout (yet?)!

  • The new layout of Wikipedia is bad! Why do all these sites this sh**? Youtube sucks with the BETA and the new channels! Thank god the german Wikipedia page has the old layout (yet?)!

  • oh god.....

  • The people who argue against Wikipedia do not understand people. People want , and need, knowledge. The trouble is, we can't afford to pay for it.

To describe the voluntary participation of academicians as a waste of their valuable time is idiocy. What the point of producing research that few people have access to?

There was a time when people didn't know how to co-operate, that's why money was invented. We continue to learn how to co-operate in the most effective, efficient and humane ways.

  • @variousprojectsnames It's an encyclopedia, not a classroom.

  • @transworId

I never said it was. Take a closer look at what I wrote, please. I think you'll find that we agree.

  • @variousprojectsnames now knowledge aren't just free in Wikipedia; it is free everywhere, there are free news and article from media corporation (like BBC) and free lecture notes from MIT, and at YouTube.

What is NOT free right now is a PURE RAW research-paper that we found in Google Scholar, even Wikiedia didn't provide free research-paper.

What you read in BBC or Wikipedia or from Standford or MIT is free, but BBC and MIT or SciAM has better writter than Wikipedia. PERIOD.

  • Love Wiki!

Listen to the so called "Me Me, I, I" experts boo hoo about wiki!

Get over it, the experts have been found out and they were short on ethics!

  • LOL "books"

  • Maybe Wiki should offer a place for the credentialed professionals to post if ofc they prove their credentials.

  • Wikipedia needs to just let others approve changes. Who cares if professionals aren't posting these things eventually the right information will get up there.

  • The crux of this argument pro & con for/against Wikipedia & its digital cousins is one of categories. The African professor makes a valid argument concerning "native" knowledge of his elders. But, there's something also to be said for someone spending decades within a given field of expertise. All of us may have knowledge about our neighborhood, for example, but not all of us have useful opinions on biochemistry. For the latter, one needs to make an honest effort at gaining knowledge.

  • As a college instructor, the impact I see from Wikipedia has been students cutting & pasting entire passages from it attempting to hand in such "work" as original. Unless your instructors are entirely asleep (always a possibility) - it's very easy to know when you have cut & pasted something from the internet. When I receive papers "written" in such a manner, I truly enjoy - more than anything I do as an instructor - in rewarding these students with really big, really fat 'F.'

  • @bapyou all this really means is that "education" especially GE needs to be revamped. It's a dinosaur and needs to die off.

  • Encyclopedia Dramatica is the future of all the internet. Half truths everywhere. No moral ethics, everything goes.

  • Wiki will most likely go down with the coming generation of internet users. It's already being massively attacked with sheer stupidity of those 4chan kiddies. If those fools are what make the future of knowledge... GF WIKI.

  • This is absolutely a horrible "documentary." It's so annoying listening to these buzzwords over and over again.

  • Amateurs love what they do. I respect this knowledge - it is as close to the truth as anything else

  • Myspace? Never heard of that.

  • While I do somewhat agree with that guys comments about the cult of the amateur, I would counter with that some of histories greatest minds where born, not made. Nicola Telsa, Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, these men seemed to be born with innate gifts which contributed to humanity vastly. Great men, the real giants of history, I think where born with these gifts. All the education in the world cannot turn a mediocre person into these titans of history.

  • @MatthewBissonnette88 Demoralizing view of the human mind you have there. I will not argue against your point rather delve "around". If the menial man uses the 21 century methods of learning and learns at an accelerated pace your correct he may never become the next.....(inject your own great human intellectual).......... However, think globally, the human race, as it must, is growing significantly faster than ever before. More of your mediocre minds that have even more knowledge. I and us......

  • @MatthewBissonnette88 That, as I dearly hope, brings about less knowledge suppression and we can move forward., for more the knowledgeable the more we can keep in check the "mad scientist": cosmologist, historian, creationist, pantheist. What have you..........

  • Exactly who is "we"?

Sounds like the elite upset they can no longer set the tune of the day completely...

  • Holy fuck, this is long.

  • yay Chris Pirillo

  • LMAo the second coming??... that sounds familier hahaha

  • wiki is a load of my arse lol

  • I love Wikipedia.

    Yo amo Wikipedia.

  • Lemonparty is web 2.0

  • the intense sarcasm makes this guy seem like a fucking idiot. i didn't even watch a full minute, what a tool.

  • How a green party activist inside Wikipedia abused his admin rights to manipulate thousands of articles in order to remove critical viewpoints about man-made global warming:

    bit (dot) ly / 5CMOGi

  • Wiki on Universities is another step to bastarisation of science. Wiki is full of shit. It is not reliable source of knowledge. Moron from Kansas and other pseudo experts hiding behind nickname will never replace academic lecturer and notable author. But this is very American and credible like Miss Cyrus vocal skills and Obama's "changes". Stay away of Europe and keep this shit for yourself. You can keep democracy as well. We like monarchy and republics.

  • The problem with WP is that in it sh** is mixed with good things and not everybody can tell the difference. But your comment has the same problem with all your hatred towards Kansas (not the really highest density of morons in the U.S.) I can't understand whether you are warning Europe or againt Europe but that doesn't matter much in that regard.

  • You knew what I mean ;) Personally I have nothing against Kansas. Wiki is a great thing, because deliver decent knowledge to across the globe. What make me angry in this video is arrogancy of people who believe that democracy is that what people need in the Third World. And Wiki is a tool to spreed that idea which make her (Wiki) little bit as propaganda tool. Some thing will never be post on Wiki no matter how true they are. How about STASI and her denunziant in West Germany today?

  • Well, WP should be about information (but is imperfect or a failure in that regard) - democracy (i.e. government by the people) is not the only way but there is no justification for withholding information (except for small exceptions). Without accurate information the "people in the Third World" cannot make the choice you (rightly) want them to have.

PS. What do you mean by the Stasi sentence?

  • PS. Re your earlier comment about science. It is indeed important to note that science/scholarship/education does not work democratically.

  • @KamilSkalny

    stasi today?

  • @KamilSkalny

lol I'm also against wiki but this is american ignorance at it's best.Besides it has nothing on with democracy.bad comparison

  • @blabloobblubb It depend. Founding Fathers hated democracy, mostly. USA was design as Republic. Republic has nothing on with democracy. Almost ;) STASI today. funny isn't? The same KGB, UB and Securitate. There is no space but believe me this guys never quit. Now inside UE as Europol, European super police.

  • Has anyone actually watched this video in it's entirety? Come on now, be honest!

  • I'll be honest: I didn't as the guy irritated me.

  • @TheSmokeyBacon sure

  • mwahahah at 7:50 it appears to imply that ALL of the non English speaking world is the 'developing world', French German included

  • 48 MINS!!!!!!

  • 12:00

They're creating a list of new names for Apple products.

  • @Dragolaa

    LOL!

  • video quality fail!

  • SHUT UP

  • @pisanghangus well said.

if they don't like it they can...

hmm... i believe there is an internet term for this... oh yes!

    GTFO

go read some of your precious books, and stay offa' my website fore' i get mah' pea-shooter ~_~*

  • Please refrain from drawing quotes into the air, especially when there are not appropriate. A library is a library, not a "library".

  • @mainsqueeze1977 He was being sarcastic.

  • @NathanBGood11101

Still no reason for this quote drawing. It is very annoying and does not express sarcasm at all.

  • @mainsqueeze1977

I agree. That guy was irritating as hell and the air quotes only served to enhance the desire to strangle.

  • wiki is great, sure if you an uninformed and dont know about citations then fine, but wiki is like the giant directory of knowledge, if you really want to find out about the subject then follow up citations, consider the source, for example if its politics and you follow the citation to a page by the guardian newspaper, expect a leftwards slant, same deal with FOX news for rightwards slant, all these people saying "dont trust wiki" annoy me, its kind of insulting to our intellegence.

  • its not the issue.. the truth evolves and so jimmy wales.. i partially agree with locketudor

  • i mean someone must come up with a bright idea to be an alternative of wikipedia so it will not monopolize the information. Something like Larry Sanger did (Citizendium). A co-founder (co-founder? he actually proposed the idea of wiki) of wikipedia.

  • oh god the speech at the beginning makes this dude seem like such a cunt

  • the truth doesn't exist at all, if we have an agreement, that will be our truth, we build the truth

  • @locketudor

    Nonsense!
