I have got a very good hint for you to keeping the nice old Engine in good shape with todays ultra dry eco fuels: Use 1:100 API TC two stroke oil / fuel mix as regular driving fuel, that keeps the old fuel-system gaskets, rubber parts, alloy parts etc... and cast iron metal surfaces of those vintage engines in excellent shape...and it also lubricates the valves and upper piston regions. Most Porsche vintage owners in Germany do so :) Also keeps carbs and tank clean and rustfree!
The engines werent bad B series if I remeber ,but god the rest of the car was shite, rusted faster than if they were sprayed with salt and sunk in a dock.
BLMC could never get the paint to stick to their cars and never heard of underseal, also the metal used was 50% new steel and 50% rusty scrap,so it had the iron oxide in it already, thats also why early jap cars rusted like hell as they were made from recycled rusty steel.
Well I have cut enough metal out of these and hundreds of other cars over the years and done hundreds of hours of welding on them, when you weld any steel you get to know if its good steel or not, despite fords inability to paint anything their steel was 100 times better but then ford used virgin steel not recycled,if you remeber ford even had their own foundries and mills.
forgive me,what do I know?fuck all no doubt,I mean I cant tell the difference between different metals I have spent hundreds of hours possibly thousands welding can I?
whats welding got to do with the quality of the metal... all i was saying was that in those days rust was a big problem with all cars due to water and moisture being trapped in places, also the underseal wasnt as good then
the engines that were fitted in spitfires are not bmc "B" SERIES engines they are standard triumph's own engine designed approx around 1954 before triumphs were part of british leyland, these engines were also fitted into triumph spitfires, dolomites, heralds and mg midgets the B SERIES engine was an austin designed engine and was fitted into basically nearly everything! fitted with a 4 cylinder petrol engine made by leyland that was badged austin or morris and also mgb's.

it was the lack of underseal and the many watertraps that made them rust, not the quality of the steel

Read the first paragraph of my post, plus it was because the steel was over 50pc recycled, same reasons why Jap cars rot like fuck.
