If you do that you will only have to do a C and E chord for the beginning, and it will make the bar chords after a lot easier to to pull off

excellent lesson justin, Its weird that i first watched this over 2 years ago and it was out of my reach completely and now I've just found it again and I'm able to follow. Not hating, just FYI. Frusciante holds the pick with his second finger (btwn 1st/2nd knuckle) while finger picking, through the first EM7 chord, then picks from there on. Another minor point, Frusciante plays that "little pinky slide" as a hammer-on with his pinky, then repositions his ring finger up a string, before it is needed. This has been one of the hardest things I've ever taught my left hand to do and ring all of the notes cleanly.

not being able to freely reproduce tabs of a song is just wrong IMO. didn't Justin write down the tabs himself? if he did, that's *justin's* work, then. not anyone else's. John Frusciante *created* the song, yes, and much respect to him for that. but he doesn't *own* it. how can you *own* a series of notes? that just sounds absurd to me...

"hey! stop playing those notes, they're mine!"

Also I recommend using a pick so you can play the chords afterwards, using a spare finger for the other note when needed. I use my middle finger nail as a "second pick" :)

Thanks but for me I found it easier to play it a little differently. For example not using a barre shape but my thumb to cover the bass E at 4:46. I can then use my 1st finger for the other note and meanwhile move the other fingers in place.

What's a capp-o?

@UltimateImperium It is a clamp that is used on the guitar to make the neck shorter. By placing a capo (head) on a particular fret, you create a 'new nut'; a new zero fret.

A capo can be used on the fretboard for any tuning. The really cool thing about them, is that your guitar has 'sweet spots'. When you place a capo, say, on the 3rd fret, & play in G, your guitar resonance might 'light up.'
