Long Live Margaret Thatcher! Anyone would of done what she did, let's look at it this way, if you ran a clothes factory and your workers were in work making clothes with no material, where's your profit? How are you going to pay them at the end of the month? Margaret Thatcher should be seen as an idol to all women as she made the law stricter on rape and gave millions to cervical and breast cancer! One of the best prime ministers ever!!
Who the fuck are you? Shouldn't talk about cancer like that. You never know you could end up one day with, for instance bowl cancer. Although I find bowl cancer unlikely considering the amount of shit you spew on the comments. Cunt.
@RichardElden Ah, the good old you tube extremist views. I love this place. Come on any messageboard any time of day and people are spouting off using words like "evil" and "blind".......if only the world really could be reduced to such easily-contained descriptinons.
The NHS is simply an administrative function, it has no moral value of itself. I think you mean that the ideolgy behind it is evil - to offer people of all backgrounds healthcare. Yes, that is really evil.
@RichardElden My last words to a sperm cell that needs a slap. Who gave you the NHS and hope you never need it what goes round comes round so grow up shut your mouth and go away.
@RichardElden You are no more than a young sperm cell who has been listening to some other tory prat that needs to look up the facts . God help us if there are many others like you
Thatcher used DECONTROL as a political tactic to beat down working people .The way which the word "Democracy" tripps off her lips as if it were exclusive to her and her demonic hordes of money grabbing banker buttlicker followers is hilarious. This was her subterfuge .My champagne is in the chiller waiting on the Devil biting her arse with Hubris; and i hope she feels it when satan sinks his teeth into her heart and takes a BIG FLAMING BITE.Murderous bitch.
@Kozzy06 Discription of a Tory Selfish greedy liars. Never have given a damb about the working class NHS or the elderly. We will never forget the school milk she stole miners strike state of the NHS schools she let fall apart and the poll tax, she was an evil PM and hated by most by the end of her term . A Tory will bring high unemployment try and kill the NHS and look after the greedy selfish people that vote for them.
And indeed what a great superpower that Britain is, with a bunch of alcoholics roaming the streets in search for power. Please save the comments of high and mightiness for more glorious countries with better values, if indeed there are any glorious countries. More so, like a bunch of segregated boundaries..And that we call- a country.
As a matter of fact, Greece is in a much better state, at least, society- wise than the UK, most of the citizens live happily and collectively with no serious mental health issues, which seem to be prevalent amongst the affluent individualist British.
@403766 Saved Britain? From who you window licker? Some Argentinan scrap merchants? The Americans had already urged the cow to agree to the Peruvian peace plan. That night she gave the order to murder hundreds of people on the Belgrano. A ship that was sailing away from our forces and to it's home port of Buenos Airies. The cunt should be kicked to death and her body hung from a tree to rot.
No you fucking retard, saved our country frm turnign into what greece is now, economically fucked, our standard of living wud be shit if it wasnt for thatcher and if you knew even the slightest about economics you wud know that labour in the late 70's were letting britain go under and serously decline as a superower, she made us competitive again and a superpower, of curs enot all of her decisions i agree with, but overall she really helped britain deserves thanks
And for those who state that Blair has given Thatcher a state funeral, remember this: Blair and his public relations office thought that hugging Gaddaffi twice on world TV was a good idea. He was clearly a terrible judge of character.
The day Thatcher finally snuffs it, I'll be having a steady pint.
The Nott's UDM thought they were getting in bed with the Tories and were also royally "shafted"
I also read one comment stating that no one died in the strike. Wrong. I know of two men that were killed "Riddling for coal". Essentially this is the process of trawling through the slag heaps to find pieces of coal that were missed in the processing and washing of the coal. It is labour intensive and provides low returns but it was one way that we could attempt to heat our homes. Two men were buried alive in attempting to find these small amounts of coal.
Miners claimed better working conditions and wages because their job was dangerous. Also, to earlier comments by certain authors: do you honestly believe that miners took blankets to work? Are really so stupid? As to lazy comments etc, I was a child of the strike and saw families struggling to feed their children, couldn't afford to heat their homes etc? Would you starve your family for a few extra quid? I doubt it, so maybe there was a little more to it, you pea brained ignoramous.
@BRITLEGEND77 I will raise a glass or 10 when that cow croaks it mate! She tore the soul out of scotland and northern england and wales, We celtic fans have a song it goes WERE HAVIN A PARTY WHEN THATCHER DIES, JELLY AND ICE CREAM WHEN THATCHER DIES, PASS THE PARCEL WHEN THATCHER DIES, WERE HAVIN A PARTY WHEN THATCHER DIES! A wee bit lacking in imagination i know but you get the message.
How did the Scottish miners kill democracy the stupid bitch killed democracy now Scotland has to put up with the stupid laws she made and UnitedBritannia you are a sick twat you are just turning more people against the Scottish miners who were put through hell because of that bitch
Why can't Britain have leaders like this anymore? The answer: spineless, self-hating, leftist ideology of liberalism and political correctness that will not stop until everything worthwhile in Britain has been destroyed.
The closure of mines was all down to The Ridley Plan. The Tory party wanted to smash the NUM after they brought down the Tory Gov in the 1970s. The Tories hate Trade Unions because they try to get a better deal for workers which eats into profits. Thatcher was a reactionary and an enemy of the working class.
you have to think if she was right or not, look at us now we all use gas and no coal, which is healther, the streets are cleaner, coaling was poisionous, people died years later from it, and still are, she done us all a favour i say, what do we use coal for now, hardly nothing. i say its all worked out in the end, and yes i agree thatcher was a cow for other reasons, but i bet she looks back and thinks she wishes she done a few things different.
@llloydy1 so even though thatcher stopped being prime minister in 1990, unemplyment in 2011 is still her fault? if labour were - like they say they were - surely they would have spent some of the new money thatcher made on giving people a job... either labour dont actually care about people's jobs - like maggie said they dont oppose unemplyment they wollow in it - or the places you listed are too busy feeling sorry for themselves that they cant be bothered to make their own jobs.
@LORDMCHUGH coal use in the UK started declining with the use of desiel powered trains and coal no longer being used to produce gas. Pit mining is far more costly per tonne compared to open pit mining in Germany, Russia and Poland, if it wasn't UK mines would still be open.
I HATE HER. SHE HAS CLOSED DOWN THE MINES, TOOK AWAY CHILDRENS MILK ALSO, WHEN SHE ENTERD OFFICE THERE WAS 1M OUT OF WORK, AND WHEN SHE LEFT THEY WERE 3M OUT OF WORK. PLUS PEPOLE ONLY SUPPORTER BECUSASE SHE LOVED THE RICH. SHE HATED THE POOR! HOW CAN YOU JUSTIFY HER ACTIONS?
@politicalwoods coal use had declined in the UK way before she came to power. To carry on mining for expensive coal that couldn't compete with foreign open cast mined coal would ahve been crazy so 22 mines were to close then the miners had a hissy fit. If you owned a company making VHS video and tape cassets would you not start reducoing production as the sale of DVD and CD became popular? I'll give you some advice, don't ever start up your own company for gods sake, its bound to fail.
It's true that the striking miners probably didn't represent the majority of Britain at the time, but personally I don't think it's acceptable to sacrifice the welfare of a thousands-strong minority the improve life for everyone else. The government is responsible for maintaining/improving the quality of life for everyone in Britain, and shouldn't abandon a select group for the sake of the majority.
@MrPto1967 Yes without Thatcher Britain would be a graveyard.... , along with the abandond dockyards , coalmines , steelworks, ironworks, car manufactures, and remember motor cycles ...all made in Britain.....strange days that we should remjember Thatcher by
Sound more like she's talking about the banks and the establishment and those who fund the tory party than anyone else. Sounds like you know a lot about fascism Untied Britannia! Waaaaaaghhhhh!!!
@MrJanesaddiction Funny I remener that Scargill did not have the balls to call a national ballot thereby walking straight into the trap.Picketing out the nottinghamshire miners was the cause of most of the violence,he also split the NUM,blame him.By the way"the winter of discontent" brought down the Labour government and ushered in Mrs.Thatcher, clever them unions, personally I thought Thatcher and the unions were a match made in heaven.
@UnitedBritannia Actually the columnist Peter Hitchens writes about why lefties write "Facist" wrongly. According to him it is really a sort of left wing way to connect that word to racist, by spelling it differently, even despite the fact that, at least Italian fascism, was not originally racist at all. But of course the Left doesn't care, sort of similar that every time a socialist regime collapses, they say oh they really weren't socialist at all. Excuses excuses.
@UnitedBritannia wait a sec, did you see the way the police acted towards innocent people at stonehenge? That is fascism- peaceful, they weren't disturbing anyone and what do the police do? Smash windows of buses and beat people up. Disgraceful.
@MrJanesaddiction All true, was,nt she clever! The miners declared war on the British public in 1974,this was just round 2,Thatcher fucked them, they walked straight into the trap.I did not like Thatcher but I was with her on this.
@anwarsat Why would you like to good hard working miners put on the dole. King coal made the UK a world power . Without coal we would have lost the 2nd World War.
@grandslam1998 Then along came desiel engined trains, ships ,nuclear and gas power and the world moved on, its just ashame the miners were too dumb to work it out that coal use was declining and open pit mining was the way to go, instead they refused reform and job losses. Maybe we should stil be producing the mark 1 tank because without it we would have lost the 1st World War! Dumb!
@MrJanesaddiction didnt thatcher buy lots of coal from russia like 2 years supply for the uk for the miners strike and now the uk buy there gas and coal and wheat from the very rich russia
it's right what she said scargill and all them wanted us communist, with a special relationship with moscow,i think she's the best pm we ever had,all that culture we had in the90s with the brit pop thing, that was all children of thatcher not blair-the best pm since churchill
labour spend spend spend tories spend wot we raise in taxes which is why ppl h8 them more, but sometimes having restraint is for the best. imagine if wen u were a kid u were aloud to eat as much chocolate as u wanted. wudve gotten sick. tories r like sensible parents. unpopular but better in long term
@vivascargill Actually she's going to be given a state funeral agreed by the last LABOUR government , she's old and frail now but she must sit and drink her co co and smile at her TOTAL victory over that Russian employee Scargill who bought a new house and Jaguar during the strike , the fact that he thinks he won shows how deluded he is
Thatcher saved us from the wrath of the unions. They were running the country in the 70's, thatcher took the power from the unions and gave it back to the people.
Well other than a couple of honest miners who didnt want to partake in the illegal strikes and so went back to the pits.Of course, with the encouragement from the union hierarchy these "scabs" were demonised and attacked by picketers. Houses vandalised, family members attacked and even murders,as can be seen in 1985.
Oh how great Scargil was, encouraging violence to achieve his deranged political ends. He was the death of the industry, not Mrs. T
@welshperson123 Very well said. There was a recent discussion on a radio station that drew together a striking miner from the time and a miner that crossed the picket line and was hence labeled a "scab". The striking miner tried to insinuate that the guy who crossed the picket line was some how dishonourable. Can someone please tell me how providing for his family was a dishonourable thing to do??
@Jonnyw127 Because he didn't agree or go along with what the other people wanted him to do he was intimidated and bullied. Thats not democracy thats tyranny!! Scargil has blood on his hands as far as I'm concerned.
the country was in a terrible state, days on end without power, imgaine not living wiht power now a days, for weeks at a time somtimes. And that is the tip of the ice berg.
"I will never negotiate with people who use coercion and violence"
sounds either like a pacifist statement or "I will hit back no matter what". I think the second inherent motive has been shown true to be with Maggie Thatcher.
@hyperseauton She also described the striking miners as "the enemy within"...
It's all because of her utter hatered for workers' rights, fairity, equality and above all socialism.
She then left No. 10 in 1990 leaving us with a police state, wealth division, a crisis in society, poor NHS, poor state schools, unfair taxation and yuppies.
Thatcher you have no right to lecture anyone on Democracy, what about the 10 million Londeners votes you abolished when the GLC was scraped, you and your unelected Lords are the fanatics, war mongering fanatics
And lets not forget the latest revelations. Unite union actually bankroll this very Labour government!!! Add to that the threat of rail worker strikes and we might as well have a big banner up saying "UK PLC..closed for business" thanks to the unions.
I really cannot understand why Unite or any unions fund a party that no longer represents their interests. The trade unions are still (thankfully) true to their their roots. However these strikes would not be happening if Labour stuck to it's left-wing roots. Otherwise, after '97 railways would be in public hands and the Thatcherite anti-union laws would have been abolished. After the last election we would have had a referendum on the EU.
These strikes are timid compared to France's anyway!
The bottom line is Labour will continue to cripple this country if they win in May. Nobody can deny the endless stream of stealth taxes, which continue to rise even when the country is struggling to stay afloat. We now have a massive national debt thanks to Brown's idea of spending our way out of debt (WTF??) that our children's children will still be struggling with in years to come. Pensions have been raided to such an extent that they will be meaningless by the time I reach retirement age
@carterst This Labour govt. has been disastrous for everyone in Britain - but especially those under 35 or so. I'm 22 - I will probably be spending the majority of my working life enduring higher taxes (and I'm on a very modest wage as it is) to pay off Brown's scandalous policy of buying off the electorate over the past decade.
@carterst Worse - Labour policies have strangled aspiration and ambition by hobbling the entrepreneurial spirit of our people by an ever-expanding monopolistic public sector and increased taxes that have hit small and medium-sized businesses (the horse-power of our economy) hardest.
And, he actively encouraged the dangerous behavior of the banking sector because they were funding his grandiose public sector schemes (nearly all of which will be ultimately judged as totally useless).
You talk of grandiose public sector schemes. That were funded by the private pocket?
British Rail, British Steel, NHS, NCB, Girobank, British Gas, CEGB, British Airways/BOAC/BEA. They are proper public sector schemes. Funded by us, to serve us! The banking sector came to rise under Thatcher. Our traditional industrial economy was smashed and gave way to greed, at the price of mass unemployment. "New Labour" have continued this policy of spending any money incorrectly and promoting greed.
@carterst How Brown and Labour manage to cling on to a shred of a reputation for economic competence is truly one of the greatest mysterious of our times. But history will judge Brown to have been an unmitigated disaster for this country, as chancellor and prime minister, and the Labour party will be consigned to the wilderness once again.
The edifice that this wretched govt. has built is starting to collapse all around us. We still don't know the full extent of the damage they have done.
The damage they have done is only due to continuing the banking sector controlled economy established by Thatcher. Had they begun to re-regulate and distribute the budget better as a true Labour government should have done soon after the '97 election, this disaster would not have hit Britain so hard. We would have been saving, not spending and borrowing and letting the markets cause havoc.
@JackEpiphoneLP Yes you are correct - but labour would have been condemned had they imposed banking regulation. Instead they pandered to the right wing selfish society that 18 years of Tory misrule had bred and continued encouraging reckless behaviour.
Indeed, "New Labour" has helped to cause this problem by continuing the greedy, divisive economic policies of Thatcherism. Britain no longer has prudence. We have a culture of spending, not saving. We want to get our grubby hands on cash by any means possible, whether it be foolishly sending gold in the post, sueing for anything and everything or getting massive loans. We need to get our priorities right. This is not just a political problem, but crucially a social problem too.
I really can't see what the Tories or the LibDems can do to improve our situation - the three main parties now seem to have very similar policies. Either similar policies or no policies at all...
Our politics and our society have now descended into a cesspit. No party can possibly sort things out, as no party has deep-rooted convictions anymore, without them being a bunch of bigoted far-right nutters. Green are still in the wilderness and UKIP are the Tory reserve party...
@carterst Thatcher tore the heart out of industrial Britain, and we're still paying the price to this day. Where is the industrial might to help us out of recession? It's all gone, and you just have to look at the private sector and the mess it's in now to see how Britain should never have another tory government.
@WhyCantIVote Quite. Labour politicians and megalomaniac trade union leaders had more to do with the decline of Industrial Britain than Margaret Thatcher ever did.
@UnitedBritannia Come with meon a tour of the north of englang and i will show you Thatcherisuim and the decay it is still spreading, with all its decaying social degregation.Men were proud to work in our steel mills and mines but thanks to thacthers policies barren waste is all that is left, and dole is now a way of life?
@UnitedBritannia Come with me on a tour of the north of englang and i will show you Thatcherisuim and the decay it is still spreading, with all its decaying social degregation.Men were proud to work in our steel mills and mines but thanks to thacthers policies barren waste is all that is left, and dole is now a way of life?
@UnitedBritannia. Was it the TU that closed down the mines, steel works, railway works. I think not! Mrs T and her Tory clones are to blame. she hates the working class and the Tory party soon got rid of her when they knew she was spent.
@grandslam1998 lol so nothing to do with the fact no one wanted the coal or steel produced because it cost too much so everyone bought cheaper from abroad. She just exposed them to all to the market and they couldn't compete. Would you be happy paying for Tesco's staff wages through taxation then having to pay again at the till for your shopping? it was the same for coal and steel because they didn't make profit due to lack of modernisation.
@pimpUK1 U can always buy cheaper esp when things are produced by poor wages and poor H and S laws and few human rights. (China and India ) Its not a level playing field. When you put people out of work they become a drain on the country. You have to pay them to do nothing. We have become over dependant on foreign imports. If we had another big war how would we survive? I do not mind paying extra to keep British workers in jobs. Profit is not the be and end all!
So modernize them. Or if they absolutely HAD to go, then provide alternative employment for the tens of thousands of miners who made up the communities decimated by the closure of those 97 pits seen to by her government. Cold economics can't wash that blood from her hands.
@MisterWolf7 The unions kept blocking modernisation because improved production results in job losses. I used to(2009) work for Corus and the stupid union kept blocking automated production lines where I worked, now the site has shut down and all 350 of us were laid off! Unions should be banned; they had their time in the 1800's to improve working conditions which are now controlled by law. They are totally unnecessary in the UK today and just fuck up everything for everyone.
@MisterWolf7 I never get that attitude to work, that others must provide work for you........ermmm no you get out there and find work, thats how the world works, no government owes anyonea living, theres no fate but what you make.
That's an incredibly simplistic view of the issue. Tens of thousands of job vacancies don't just spring up over night and that's what we're looking at, thousands of men to every mine laid off. The pit closures kicked the legs out from under people, families and communities in areas where there was no other work and no money to invest in much else, you couldn't simply 'find another vocation'. Coal miners are anything but lazy and Thatcher more than let them down.
@MisterWolf7 There’s no right to have a job, a good worker that wants work will always have it. Most people that claim they can’t find work are only looking in their local area rather than nationwide or even internationally. In the 80s there was good money to be made in the North Sea but as per usual most Brits won't do 6+ weeks away from home!! Coal miners used to take blankets down the mines when on night shift and spent most of the shift asleep.
I'd like to see your proof for that accusation. The reality is that there were many good workers wanting work and next to none of it to be had. Look at the rest of the North, Manchester, Sheffield, Liverpool, Newcastle, look at Scotland where unemployment also soared, were they all too work-shy to feed their children too? Or is there a bit of pattern here? Your only argument seems to be that people were too lazy to work and the truth is that there was not enough work to go around.
@MisterWolf7 Its well documented so hardly a accusational however I'm sure it wasn't "every" mine. Good work local to them more like. Take a look at what other nationalities do to find work, ie the Indians, Polish, etc, they MOVE, its not rocket science, I hate hearing people moan about there being no jobs, you move to where there are jobs rather than claiming dole sitting around feeling sorry for yourself. If we didn't have a welfare state I'm sure there would be far less that can't find work
@pimpUK1You seem to be blessed with a great knowlege of the world for someone so young . l can see by your views on the "past" industry of this country , particularly the coal mining industry , that you must have been very involved . How involved were you to gain such knowlege ?. At what collieries did you work ?, lt must have been a lovely pit to grant blankets to the night shift going underground . As one who worked underground for many years l would have loved to have you with me down there
@alunhughes147 I've done far more in my life than most do in a lifetime. Obviously I'm not stupid enough to have ever wanted to work in a mine. It’s a well documented fact that in many mines, miners would sleep during nightshift. The fact that we no longer have many mines just proves that they were inefficient mainly due to the unions ridiculous demands resulting in poor production compared to foreign rivals. The miners had it good whilst they could keep the country to ransom by striking.
@pimpUK1You seem to have done very well in your young life , and good luck to you . However ,some of your views are misguided . Having worked on the coalface for many years . the men l worked with were hard working and knowledgeable . l have never seen anyone take a blanket underground and have certainly never seen anyone asleep . As for ineficency , you must look to bad management . The miners at Tower in S. Wales took over the pit after the NCB had closed it and ran it for a decade at a profit
@alunhughes147 I have done alright got my first house at 24 and have never claimed any form state welfare. I did this through working 60-80 hours a week often working 15 hours a day, working in the night and at weekends, things many other British are not prepared to do. It’s easy to blame management but which union members kept blocking attempts to modernise mining? At Tower they must have made changes to make it profitable? It’s always bad for a nation to nationalise things.
@pimpUK1 Good for you young man , l hope your dedication brings its just rewards . Regarding the miners buyout of Tower Colliery . After the men had bought this loss making pit from the NCB the only thing that changed was the bringing in of a new management team . The pit still retained its 100% NUM membership but went from a loss making unit to one of profit in a very short time . ln the general view ,ie media , unions are potrayed as buffers against modenization and progress , this is not so
@pimpUK1 l have yet to meet a miner who was'nt willing to throw away his shovel ,mandril and sledge and have the hard work of cutting the coal done for him by a machine .You must remember that the coal industry was being gently run down from the 1960s , but it was done with a social plan that would divert the men into other industries . ie from a pit in the North East to a car making plant in the Midlands .The rapid destruction of the industry in the 80s didnt allow for this , there was no plan
@pimpUK1 Thatcher talks about coercion and violence while her bully boys(police) ran riot with impunity, She betrayed a whole generation of working class people, whilst giving tax breaks to her rich, foreign tax haven friends. All those inferior "cheap" imports doubled or trebled in price overnight, once their friend thatcher had destroyed our own steel and coal industries. We're now paying over 4 times in real terms. Or did you stop costing the day you made your ill informed argument.
@londonmik2010 Thats how the free market works, I couldn't care where something is made as long as it does the job I bought it for is all I care about. She didn't betray anyone, she exposed companies that would have collapsed years ago and were only still in existance due to hand outs from the tax payer. I don't want my tax money going to a company unless it is a investment, no point propping up a dying horse. Bollox about real terms, what items are you using as a example?
@pimpUK1 yeah, but would the closing down of tescos in their hundreds decimate entire communities, and whilst detaching the worker from their labour indefinitely?
@machoTit It wouldn't happen as Tesco is a prime example of capitalism....as much as I hate shopping there, they have a very good business model. If a Tesco store was not meeting targets, the manger would be replaced by someone that can reach target. That’s how retail works. If a Tesco distribution centre was to close (which employ thousands) it would have a effect on the community, however many of the workers are non British because most British people won’t do shift work or manual labour!
@pimpUK1 most mines were still profitable. incidently you talk about them being subject to market forces well why didn't we apply the same to farming and other industry. The NUM were used as an example and whatever the profitability off the mines compared to other british industry she would have closed them. her problem was that you had pit 'towns' were no money was spent on regenration, retraining and setting up new forms of employment. redundancy money wasn't going to maintain a towns economy!
@WhyCantIVote Nationalisation employed 300,ooo miners who payed their taxes and gave Britian cheap fuel, now they and their sons stay at home and and claim dole which cost the nation you and me, more than all the other departments put together, will done maggie .

TheBoydie1982 8 months ago
I also read one comment stating that no one died in the strike. Wrong. I know of two men that were killed "Riddling for coal". Essentially this is the process of trawling through the slag heaps to find pieces of coal that were missed in the processing and washing of the coal. It is labour intensive and provides low returns but it was one way that we could attempt to heat our homes. Two men were buried alive in attempting to find these small amounts of coal.
TheBoydie1982 8 months ago
Miners claimed better working conditions and wages because their job was dangerous. Also, to earlier comments by certain authors: do you honestly believe that miners took blankets to work? Are really so stupid? As to lazy comments etc, I was a child of the strike and saw families struggling to feed their children, couldn't afford to heat their homes etc? Would you starve your family for a few extra quid? I doubt it, so maybe there was a little more to it, you pea brained ignoramous.

@LORDMCHUGH coal use in the UK started declining with the use of desiel powered trains and coal no longer being used to produce gas. Pit mining is far more costly per tonne compared to open pit mining in Germany, Russia and Poland, if it wasn't UK mines would still be open.

@politicalwoods coal use had declined in the UK way before she came to power. @UnitedBritannia Actually the columnist Peter Hitchens writes about why lefties write "Facist" wrongly. @welshperson123 No one died in the miners strike.
Jonnyw127 1 year ago
@welshperson123 Very well said. There was a recent discussion on a radio station that drew together a striking miner from the time and a miner that crossed the picket line and was hence labeled a "scab". carterst 1 year ago
JackEpiphoneLP 1 year ago
The bottom line is Labour will continue to cripple this country if they win in May. Nobody can deny the endless stream of stealth taxes, which continue to rise even when the country is struggling to stay afloat. We now have a massive national debt thanks to Brown's idea of spending our way out of debt (WTF??) that our children's children will still be struggling with in years to come. Pensions have been raided to such an extent that they will be meaningless by the time I reach retirement age
carterst 1 year ago 9
@carterst This Labour govt. has been disastrous for everyone in Britain - but especially those under 35 or so. I'm 22 - I will probably be spending the majority of my working life enduring higher taxes (and I'm on a very modest wage as it is) to pay off Brown's scandalous policy of buying off the electorate over the past decade.
UnitedBritannia 1 year ago
@carterst Worse - Labour policies have strangled aspiration and ambition by hobbling the entrepreneurial spirit of our people by an ever-expanding monopolistic public sector and increased taxes that have hit small and medium-sized businesses (the horse-power of our economy) hardest.
And, he actively encouraged the dangerous behavior of the banking sector because they were funding his grandiose public sector schemes (nearly all of which will be ultimately judged as totally useless).
UnitedBritannia 1 year ago
You talk of grandiose public sector schemes. That were funded by the private pocket?
British Rail, British Steel, NHS, NCB, Girobank, British Gas, CEGB, British Airways/BOAC/BEA. They are proper public sector schemes. Funded by us, to serve us! The banking sector came to rise under Thatcher. Our traditional industrial economy was smashed and gave way to greed, at the price of mass unemployment. "New Labour" have continued this policy of spending any money incorrectly and promoting greed.
JackEpiphoneLP 1 year ago
@UnitedBritannia Do you actually have a clue what you are talking about?
gjv2008 1 year ago
@carterst How Brown and Labour manage to cling on to a shred of a reputation for economic competence is truly one of the greatest mysterious of our times. But history will judge Brown to have been an unmitigated disaster for this country, as chancellor and prime minister, and the Labour party will be consigned to the wilderness once again.
The edifice that this wretched govt. has built is starting to collapse all around us. We still don't know the full extent of the damage they have done.
UnitedBritannia 1 year ago 4
Yes this New Labour government is wretched.
No question.
A case of missed opportunities...
JackEpiphoneLP 1 year ago
@JackEpiphoneLP Yes you are correct - but labour would have been condemned had they imposed banking regulation. Instead they pandered to the right wing selfish society that 18 years of Tory misrule had bred and continued encouraging reckless behaviour.
gjv2008 1 year ago
@gjv2008 Exactly.
Unfortunately, the behaviour of the Unions condemned left-wing politics in Britain to a painful and quick death.
That selfish society is now here to stay forever I suppose...Unless we fall on very hard economic times.
LunarEcli 1 year ago
Indeed, "New Labour" has helped to cause this problem by continuing the greedy, divisive economic policies of Thatcherism. Britain no longer has prudence. We have a culture of spending, not saving. We want to get our grubby hands on cash by any means possible, whether it be foolishly sending gold in the post, sueing for anything and everything or getting massive loans. We need to get our priorities right. This is not just a political problem, but crucially a social problem too.
JackEpiphoneLP 1 year ago
@carterst
JackEpiphoneLP 1 year ago 2
@carterst Thatcher tore the heart out of industrial Britain, and we're still paying the price to this day. Where is the industrial might to help us out of recession? It's all gone, and you just have to look at the private sector and the mess it's in now to see how Britain should never have another tory government.

grandslam1998 1 year ago
@grandslam1998 lol so nothing to do with the fact no one wanted the coal or steel produced because it cost too much so everyone bought cheaper from abroad. She just exposed them to all to the market and they couldn't compete. Would you be happy paying for Tesco's staff wages through taxation then having to pay again at the till for your shopping? it was the same for coal and steel because they didn't make profit due to lack of modernisation.
pimpUK1 1 year ago 14

MisterWolf7 11 months ago
@MisterWolf7 The unions kept blocking modernisation because improved production results in job losses. I used to(2009) work for Corus and the stupid union kept blocking automated production lines where I worked, now the site has shut down and all 350 of us were laid off! Unions should be banned; they had their time in the 1800's to improve working conditions which are now controlled by law. They are totally unnecessary in the UK today and just fuck up everything for everyone.
pimpUK1 11 months ago
@pimpUK1

MisterWolf7 11 months ago
@MisterWolf7 I never get that attitude to work, that others must provide work for you........ermmm no you get out there and find work, thats how the world works, no government owes anyonea living, theres no fate but what you make.
pimpUK1 11 months ago
@pimpUK1
MisterWolf7 11 months ago
@MisterWolf7 There’s no right to have a job, a good worker that wants work will always have it. Most people that claim they can’t find work are only looking in their local area rather than nationwide or even internationally. In the 80s there was good money to be made in the North Sea but as per usual most Brits won't do 6+ weeks away from home!! Coal miners used to take blankets down the mines when on night shift and spent most of the shift asleep.
pimpUK1 11 months ago
@pimpUK1
MisterWolf7 11 months ago
@MisterWolf7 Its well documented so hardly a accusational however I'm sure it wasn't "every" mine. Good work local to them more like. Take a look at what other nationalities do to find work, ie the Indians, Polish, etc, they MOVE, its not rocket science, I hate hearing people moan about there being no jobs, you move to where there are jobs rather than claiming dole sitting around feeling sorry for yourself. If we didn't have a welfare state I'm sure there would be far less that can't find work
pimpUK1 11 months ago
@pimpUK1You seem to be blessed with a great knowlege of the world for someone so young . l can see by your views on the "past" industry of this country , particularly the coal mining industry , that you must have been very involved . How involved were you to gain such knowlege ?. At what collieries did you work ?, lt must have been a lovely pit to grant blankets to the night shift going underground . As one who worked underground for many years l would have loved to have you with me down there
alunhughes147 11 months ago

@pimpUK1 yeah, but would the closing down of tescos in their hundreds decimate entire communities, and whilst detaching the worker from their labour indefinitely?
machoTit 9 months ago
