The Federal Government has owned the land since 2003 and wants to place a new federal courthouse there. wntoply6 can you name a government project that has come in on time, on budget, or even done right, let alone all three.
Construction on the court house will not start until AT LEAST next year because the General Services Administration of the Federal Government is broke. Now that the property value of the land has gone up and the city tried to get the GSA to sell the land back to a developer so the city could collect property taxes. But the GSA refused and the shell was (partially) imploded. So this is going to be an empty federal government owned lot for some time.
Yes it was. They should have wrapped the blast floors completely in that reinforced black protective fabric. That way they could have placed enough charges to bring the building completely down.
if it wasn't necessary, why waste the resources and money lelandhf? were you "in the know" and part of the organization controling this project? if you're an expert, i apologize, but can you give us a more compelling argument other than there needs to be a complete building collapse for the job to be done to expecatation of all concerned, exclusive of the general public's wow factor?
I was also at the implosion and disagree about it being botched. Had they put explosives on the outer walls then pieces of debris would have flown outward. This controlled demolition folded in on itself as planned so the debris would stay on the site. Giant concrete crushing excavators will do the rest of the demolition as the outer walls crumble inward. As much fun as it would have been to see the whole thing blown into a pile of dust, it just wasn't necessary or feasible to do it safely.
I remember this thing...
