  • close your eyes and feel miss misery drift away. . . like a kite in the summer breeze

  • everyone shutup about people disliking him, enjoy the beauty of his music instead of being bothered by those who simply dont

  • starting the playlist again tonight...

  • fuckin' a, man, i miss and love his guy.

  • I love you Elliott, soon again we we shall heal through pain.

  • 11 people watch MTV circa 2012

  • 11 people just dislike MTV.

  • this kinda songwriting is the pinnacle of writing. it's not easy wearing your heart on your sleeve.

  • So beautiful, Mr. Smith.

    P.S. I miss you terribly.

  • Nice to see the views continue to add-up on Elliott's music

  • i didn't know snape could sing so beautfully

  • dear elliott, we do, like we say we do :(

  • love this? me too. davesplaylist.co.uk

  • how you can hear this song or any elliot smith tune and not be completely overwhelmed? he sounds like a man on the verge off a meltdown, but somehow manages enough energy to share his thoughts. take comfort in this man's sincerity. a dying breed...

  • he seems out of place on the MTV TRL set

  • Anyone dissing Elliott just makes themselves look stupid or soulless .

Elliott Smith , my brother from another Mother xo RIP Bro

  • How could people come on here just to listen to this song and deliberately click dislike, unless you want attention and if you want attention, go talk to people who give a fuck about you, because no-one on here does.

  • I think is the only person who can take the saddest words and make them so heartbreakingly beautiful..

  • sadness, joy, and a mix of bitterness. This song is so beautiful, yet so depressing. But i can't seem to stop listening to it.

    Gone but never forgetten.

    RIP Elliot

  • 0:14 through 0:18 orc stylee?

  • So sad he is not here to share more music

  • Jesus fuck, he nailed it hard.

  • this is a very interesting video. what happens at the end is so revealing.

  • why did mtv stop airing stuff like this? I'm sure it has something to do with money.

  • @rpfunder01 well, they took the "music" out of music television in their logo for money. So yeah, i'd say thats a fair assumption :D

  • Of all the musicians who have passed, not one has ever brought more tears to my eyes...

  • he sounds the best in this video

  • 11 people can go fuck themselves

  • sames a as waltz #2

  • just wow... amazing lyrics and music

  • what heartache and heroin addiction get ya. talent and suicide.

  • @bassettnathan heroin isn't what gave the guy his talent... it inspired some of his music but a combination of natural talent, a creative mind, and hard work is how he became successful.

  • @bassettnathan As a person who is currently both heroin addicted and heartbroken, I can tell you that is not always the case.

  • he has very similar voice to Curt Cobain

  • @Kamasznik neg.

  • @Kamasznik You're kidding right?

  • I miss you Elliott.

  • if only if only.....Mtv hadn't turned to shit....they should make an I.M.T.V......Independent music television....just my opinion.

  • I'm new to Elliott but he's simply brilliant. Some of my friends tease me for liking him. I got into him b/c he's a fabulous musician. He's really a great songwriter too, probably one of the best in the past 20 years.

  • Aw nah, i so wish he was still alive. Sometimes i feel like his songs are all i have to get me through

  • I don't know how, and I don't think anyone can particularly know why except for that man...

But he made the single most beautifully haunting and truthful music ever created.

    Thank you for that.

    RIP Elliott.

  • @OhLookItsAlexandra Crack Cocaine and Heroin can get a lot done.

  • i like his voice....he got talent and potential..from the heart

  • whats wrong with his face?

  • @andrewface whats wrong with your face stupid?

  • @jcupsmells1 @andrewface I don't think he was being stupid, just enquiring.

Answer: he got into a lot of fights. Broken nice + scars.

  • @Talk2Luke Broken nose*

  • @andrewface he got into A LOT of fights...

  • I would give everything I own, except my guitar, to have a 30 min guitar and vocal lesson with Elliott.

  • @dahdahdah123 I think you can keep all you have as I understand this man is dead. Besides I don't think any amount of teaching will endow people with a wispy voice if they don't already have one.

  • @ferrarif40 I know he has passed. I just hope sometime in the future I'll get to meet him.

  • 11 people are miserable.

  • @YourWife2008

11 people will never possess the profound honesty that comes with being miserable. Misery is a beautiful Belle

  • I almost forgot how beautiful this song is.

    RIP Elliott

  • I've just uploaded a quite ES-inspired song called 'Mistakes as Trials'..

  • R.I.P Elliott Smith.

  • god this is so beautiful

  • Out of curiosity, do you guys prefer the album version of Miss Misery on the Good Will Hunting OST with the drums and all or do you prefer Elliot performing it with just his guitar?

  • @DrStrangeOpinion Just his guitar personally, feels more emotional and personal. Absolutely beautiful.

  • How could anyone in their right mind dislike this? Though some may say it is depressive, something about it is completely full of life. 7 years today. I miss you Elliott.

  • this sounds faster than on the cd.

  • @heyjude97 cuz he just wanted to get the fuck outta there lol

  • this song was great enough to catch my ear just while watching the ending and the credits of good will hunting... bravo. my attenion span is not the most impressive so thats how i know this song is truely special

  • It never ceases to amaze me how honest his songs are.

  • cause it 2:45 where i am and we all miss you and no one really know how great your music is like a needle in the hay olny few people find it

  • Fantastic

  • @megapixel89 Oh YES--=I AGREE--EXIT MUSIC is one of the 10 greatest songs written in the modern age..EPIC song. Love it.

  • @ dead0piggie I agree with you.

  • He looks like a witch.

  • @TheTexanAtheist Fuck you

  • This has to be the best ballad written in the past 12 years....NO? name a better one.

  • @DavelovesRealMusic theres several.

    mostly by elliott smith:-D

pretty mary k, placeholder, all cleaned out, twilight, coming up roses,

  • @certaintragedy871 Well-when you find an artist as GOOD and can write songs as good..please let me know WHO . I search through you tube and while some of my subscriptions ARE good musicians, I have yet to find songs as well written as Elliot Smith or Thom Yorke on you tube.

  • @DavelovesRealMusic Dave matthews is another great song writer. Plays excellent acoustically too. Also give Alexi Murdoch a go, and Patrick Park.

  • @BarefootMarine Not a big Dave matthews fan ) but do respect his musicianship. I do not know Patrick Park and Alex Murdoch..will check them out though..Thanks.

  • @DavelovesRealMusic Patrick Park is the worst, Murdoch is alright... Check these out Bright Eyes- Lover I Dont have to love, John Brion- Dead to the world, Sean Lennon- On again off again. Bright eyes, Jon Brion, Sean lennon, Elliot Smith, While all not on the same level all great song writers and all heavily influenced by the Beatles.

  • @BarefootMarine fuck patrick park.

  • In honor of Elliott, I plan on faking it through the day with some help from Johnny Walker Red.

  • man this version is the best. and it gets me everytime.

  • There is something heart wrenching about the busy world going by as he plays this song.

  • @whitestripebuzz that's a very good point

  • thank you elliot smith, you will not be forgotten

  • @OneTwoRhythm his music hurts my soul.

  • Amazing musician though!

  • @TheTexanAtheist

    you are so ignorant.........

  • @lll1424 you are so homosexual.

  • @lll1424 why bother? :) Elliott <3

  • @TheTexanAtheist

thanks for dismissing all those stereotypes about Texans.

  • god damn he was good.

  • more than a decade of touch people's hearts, miss misery

  • No disrespect to a dead guy, but Black Label far exceeds Red. If you're going to kill yourself with Scotch, do it properly.

  • Man, call me an idiot, but I didn't know he passed. I need to start looking people up more in-depth. Music just carries on after a musician stops living, so it's difficult to think an unmistakable voice like Smith's will never be heard live in person again.

  • Approaching perfection.

  • I seriously don't get the remarks regarding his appearance, let's judge him for the music he left us. Wich in my opinion is brilliant, most of his songs are just timeless and it's a shame he left us so early..

  • @MrSamdeb Don't judge anything or anyone for anything... The truth will break through all the bullshit. <3 Elliott

  • @Seanisblue what if u are a judge. then can you judge people?

  • Ugly??? This guy has some REAL charisma. He's amazing and the music? So stripped down to pure melody. Genius

  • People say he's ugly but I think he's one of the most beautiful beings to bless this earth.

Elliott you melt my heart, I love you, and hope you are having a good time, wherever you are :)

  • Some of the comments on earlier pages! Never understood the mentality of people whose comments consist of cheap insults or are a platform for their views on other issues. Great song by a very talented but troubled man who is sadly missed. Beautiful, heartfelt and bitter sweet!

  • beautiful....I missed this first time on TV and wasnt rerun...great post!

  • ...the one and only...RIP my friend. I'll never forget the day I ran into you off of wilshire at that little drugstore...thank you for putting me on the VIP list at Belly Up. Once here but never forgotten.

  • I'm sure I could sing every Elliott song by memory. Such a shame he is gone.

It's amazing how when you meet someone that also listens to him, it's such a big connection- like we both had a mutual friend. Elliott, we miss you.

  • @goodnightgoodmorning Agreed! !!!!!!!

  • c. 1998. Capitol Records and EMI International for the world outside of North America. At corner of 5th, 42nd and Broadway NYC. Very nicely done. Cheers.

  • It's so neat to see Elliot's between the bars video thumbnail because it looks like its just another cover, but it's actually him. It's the real deal and I think it kinda gives it this I'm with you guys, doing what I love feel to it.

  • fuckin awsome just moving

  • @wasabihansen Being strung out is a mother fucker.

  • @wasabihansen who cares

  • Damn I miss him. And yes, he was murdered. We are all victims of his loss.

  • so sad :_

  • Elliott is the man

  • I fucking miss him.

  • I love the Texas shirt!

  • @gth838n he grew up in texas. from like age 2-10. =] he was from duncanville, which is right around dallas apparently.

  • great song

  • ¿Se puede ser mas grande?

  • His scars look worse because of the shitty video quality. His face actually has a lot of character, imo. Wonderful song. Great artist who will be missed always.

  • how did he get the scars?

  • @lookhector he jumped off a cliff in attempted suicde, but a tree broke his fall.

using drugs didn't help complextion either, but it gives him character

  • @Senestery At age 34, he died in Los Angeles, California from two stab wounds to the chest.[2] The autopsy evidence was inconclusive as to whether the wounds were self-inflicted.[3] At the time of his death, Smith was working on his sixth studio album, From a Basement on the Hill, which was posthumously released

  • @Senestery if you read elliott smith and the big nothing, which i'm sure you did for this info?? maybe, maybe not, apparently he had tried to od a bunch of times. =[ *sigh* i wish he could feel/know how much everyone loved him. it's such a shame.

  • @Senestery he stopped the (tourbus?) and started running off into the distance down a road as fast as he could. his friend followed and i think fell too. he just "didn't want to be in his own skin" or something like that. i don't think he meant to jump off, it was dark. he was just running off.

  • Don't even comment unless you're going to truly appreciate the lyrical genius that Elliott Smith brought to the table. R.I.P. Elliott, we all miss you.

  • @sneakerfreaker111 That defeats the purpose of commenting, I love Elliott Smith but we should allow those that don't to express that.

  • @sneakerfreaker111

Jesus Christ dude. Just enjoy the music, don't worry about anyone else

  • @sneakerfreaker111 overrated, bland, pointless. so many people did what he was trying to do years before and miles better. i understand this is your opinion, but it really frustrates me listening people talk about this guy like he is a god, if he was still alive he would have nowhere near the amount of attention and admiration like he has now. if people commented on his guitar skills i could half understand, but lyrically its awful.

  • @dalesmith1987 ...hmmmm Overrated....yes to an extent, especially after his demise.......... but bland and pointless? No...........

  • @dalesmith1987 hahah, are you serious? I have seen very few people come close to the sentiment that he could possess. your missing out brother. If anything on a grander scale he was very underrated.

  • @dalesmith1987 You know we forgot that your opinion is the only one that matters. I'm sorry. I mean ya figure people that watch this video are Elliot Smith fans. Whatever though; everybody is wrong but you. Im really, really sorry. Go ahead Mr. Man. Say it all.

  • @dalesmith1987 maybe it's cause he writes all his own music, lyrics, guitar, drums, bass, back up vocals, harmonies, and puts all the music together himself, unlike 90% of the idiots these days!! or maybe because so many people could relate to him and totally feel close to him just thru his music!! even paul mccartney says he is a great song writer, so just shut up and go find a place where people actually like you!!

  • Have you loved before>>> Smack?

  • Comment removed

  • wow

  • Agreed! They were both brilliant, but they are two individual poets, if you ask me. It's like comparing apples to oranges or Mozart to Bach or Picasso to Matisse. Why do it? It doesn't make sense. Enjoy the masterpieces as they are and shut up! ha!

  • Enough about Nirvana, Kurt was good but Elliott Smith's music I can actually relate too.

  • @ghostofchat77 Elliott and Kurt are my fav musicians i can relate to both perfect dont be hatin!

  • @ghostofchat77 Elliott was a way better musician in the technical aspect...but I really just would never put the two in comparison. I'm a huge fan of both but i mean damn Elliott was such the beautiful most brilliant person/mind...

  • plays with simplicity but plays with so much emotion.

  • now I know why Elliott did what he did, the pain is overwhelming sometimes

  • <3 <3<3

  • Anyone else notice that Elliott's wearing the same outfit for this performance and for Conan's? Which do you think he performed first?

  • why does everyone always have to ruin good music by comparing on youtube...... kurt cobain and elliot smith (among many other artists) were very talented and left us great music we can still enjoy today - can't we just leave it at that..

  • Do you miss me Miss.Misery?

  • thank you elliott

  • the best songs are the ones where the writers reason for it hard hidden, witch allows us to give the song personal meaning..

  • no one writes them like he did ...

  • I love that Elliott sounds the same live as he does in the recordings. One of the reasons I love him so much.

  • who has better song writing......Kurt Cobain or Elliot Smith,i respect them both, with there meaningfull lyrics and depressing lines, theres songs full of emotion and pain, like thom yorke

  • dont ever mention these two in the same sentence again. and please, for gods sake, spell Elliott's name correctly.

Elliott was a pure artist. Elliott wrote such honest songs that listening to him sing feels more like a personal human experience than a passive listening session.

Kurt, well. Nirvana was a decent band but with Kurt always blaming the world for his problems his songwriting just lacks the striking personal emotion of Elliott's.

  • And they're both dead, LOL

  • What were his problems and how so did he blame them on the world?

  • have you ever even listened to the lyrics of a nirvana song?

kurt blames society for all of his and his generations problems.

  • quote the song.

  • the song? your speaking as if it was only one song.

Scoff-directed at people that didnt believe in kurts musical aspirations.

Smells like teen spirit- this is a clear attack on the apathy of his generation.

Come as you are- full of contradictions based on how we act versus how society thinks we should act.

breed- about growing up and being trapped by middle class america.

is that enough for you little brain? i mean, god i shouldnt have to even point that out, this is all obvoius stuff.

  • I'm fully capable of understanding that the lyrics are generally about the problems of society or what he though were the general problems of society but how were his problems specifically affected by society. you have still yet to connect his problems being caused directly by society.

  • im saying he blames whatever he felt was wrong in life on some external force, usually society in general dipshit. not a specific problem.

  • your so wrong smells like teen spirit was named after a deodorant and is about a girl he used to date its obvious your young an naive

  • it was named after a deodorant, but krist claimed the song was about "lazy teenagers and apathy," like what cockfight said. of course, he didn't actually write the song....and he was stoned when he said that....

again, i think the "deeper meaning" in kurt's lyrics was often coincidental and unintended, but they're still interesting to analyze. some have interpreted teen spirit as railing against abortion (read the lyrics, it's a bit of a stretch, but it does make some sense).

  • youre right, arts coincidence.Theres a name for this in fine art that no matter what the artists intent is. that it will be taken different, interpreted differently, and will carry different value and meaning to people. whether his intent was deodorant. it changed with the interpretation and relation to everyone it moved. I apologize for this nonsense on elliotts page. Rest in happiness, "alll that I used to be, will pass away and then you'll see, that all I want now is happiness for you and me."

  • i love kurt cobain, but a lot of his lyrics were nonsense. he even admitted that he didn't care a whole lot about lyrics for the most part and threw a lot of them together at the last minute on the drive to the studio. he had some powerful lines, but on the whole, his lyrics can't touch elliott's.

    both were amazing musicians, though.

  • I gotta say that's the beauty of Nirvana lyrics. Great things just happen, poetry in motion.

  • I agree, With kurt he had so much to express and it seems like he cant control it as it comes out or manage it, if thats not wat it is, he makes it so. His music is erratic his lyrics insane with screaming to calms like the pixies do. I find elliott and kurt to be very similar only elliott i think had better ways to harness and control himself and his creation/emotion into articulate pieces whereas i believe Kurt had less control in a sense.I dont know if anyone understands what im tryin to say.

  • Why the hell are you posting about Nirvana? I mean, I love the band. (It's my favorite band), but why on an Elliott Smith Video? Can't we just appreciate the music Elliott's making instead of wasting our lives posting about Kurt Cobain's lyrical ideals?

KURT COBAIN DID NOT KNOW WHAT THE HELL HE EVER WROTE ABOUT, THAT'S WHY HIS LYRICS ARE SO BRILLIANT.

  • Comment removed

  • elliot smith is the pimp of music. his lyrics are so meaningful, more meaningful than any other artist i've listend to, even kurt cobain's! that is why he's the pimp of music...

  • wonderfull...

  • I can agree with some of his emotions. I've also felt like faking it through my day with some whiskey, rum or wine. I've also had a woman say those magic words "it's over". 56 stitches in my arms, but I'm not gone and am sad Elliott Steven Smith is gone.
