@Silaxian wow.. REAlly !! Kinda shocking to hear Ray singing behind a Disco Beat w/ "heavy" guitar.. and some really dated synths... wonder if this was some producer's
idea of what might "sell".
Instead, they sold out a great artist. Pretty weird.
written by Gene McDaniels, the first version appeared on Roberta Flack's first album in 1969, and subsequently covered by Eddie Harris & Les McCann at the 1969 Montreux Jazz Festival.
Ray bending the clavinette? What a truly wonderful human. So fortunate are we to have had him here...to be able to be in his presemce Eddie Harris, too.
Killer tune, better than Mr Floods Party, got slaggged off by Searling when I asked him to play it at Blackpool Mecca All-Dayer...If you can't dance then DJ ? P Funk!!!!
@99wardie Searling knows most than most when it comes to decent soul music, he just gets cold feet when it comes to out and out northern soul dance music, he gets a snob on about direction, production and rarity
@99wardie WHO,the hell is Searling? Sorry my Radar is busted.Never heard of this name(man nor woman)I was listening to Ray Charles, that`s who and in a lifetime of 60 years have never heard anybody that knows anything about music,EVER slag off the high priest.Searling where`s your ears kept?
I've been looking for this by Della Reese - a 45 I had back in '69. I just read that there have been more than 260 versions! This one by Ray is terrific!
Good funky piece of disco. One of the last records to be released on the collectable London label before it was bought up by Polygram to focus mostly on British artists.
This song "Compared To What" was written by my friend & colleague Gene ( Eugene McDaniels). Ray sounded great!!!! Pianist/singer Les McCann also recorded at great version of this song with saxophonist Eddie Harris!!
Much respect to Ray Charles and his lifetime achievements but when I hear this my dick gets soft.

This sounds like that gay high energy disco that came out in the 80's.
An excellent song, a fantastic artist, and it still ends up like this!
