A beautiful song sung so eloquently by a true icon of this country. So sad to see Ireland has lost it's way and seems now to be a nation of consumers in an economy rather than a community. The nonsense fascination with celebrity/x factor will not be treasured by future generations.Luke Kelly and bands like the dubliners and bothy band will.
8 people are fucking idiots, you can see the passion that drove him to sing one last time for us, and that deserves to be appreciated even tho i hate to see him that way.
I dont feel like i deserve to have the name Luke Kelly (its really my name ) but im so glad i was named after such a legand of my country .R.I.P. LUKE.
As a 33 year old Irish man living living in Canada for 20 years, this song brings tears to my eyes. 8 people dislike it? Fuck ya. God rest your soul Luke.
@EmmetPro7421 Is someone not allowed hear a song on a tv show and like it? Surely a true luke fan would be glad his music is being exposed to a younger audience.
@EmmetPro7421 i am a true Luke fan, and have been for the last twenty years and i think its great for his music to be highlighted to a younger audience to show what a ledgend this man was! His voice will always be the core of Irelands culture.
Luke, I only really started to listen to you about 8 months ago.
I feel so fortunate to have recently found and appreciated your beautiful voice and unique interpretation of so many wonderful songs. I should have listened to my darling brother George all those years ago!
I can't believe that there is a dislike button on this song. without being intolerant, I can not understand how you can dislike this song?! This is just pure emotion and It always gives me so much!
I remember my father telling me how he met the Dubs in a Liverpool Hotel bar back in the early seventies. He enjoyed a late night drinking session with them. Hopefully my dad has 'crossed paths' with Luke again.
I love Luke Kelly so much, and watching this, you can see the pain in his eyes. He knows that he is dying, and that this is his last performance, but he still sang beautifully and heartfelt as always. God bless Luke Kelly and God bless Ireland!
But like to comment I like every member of The Dubliners. Who where in the past as the memebers at the moment. I went to them a week ago in Groningen (The Netherlands). Even how Barney sung with his soul. And his banjo playing of course.
For me all of them made and still make The Dubliners I've been in Dublin once. But when I hear The Dubliners it reminds me that a part of me is still in Dublin and Ireland. Probebly it's my heart.
luke kelly was nearly beat at this stage by a brain tumour.......but he still sang, and sang well. Singing was his way......and no more should be said.
@63frankie Well you're the one who called it "Ronnies band". I agree that you can't pick one out of a group, all I said was that Luke was my favourite.
Actually Luke was a founding member along with Ronnie. They were originally called "the Ronnie Drew group", although I think that was more by accident than design. It was Luke who suggested they name themselves "the Dubliners". Luke returned to England for a couple of years in late 1963/ early 64 and re-joined the group in 1965.
@63frankie Ronnies band? I dunno about that. don't get me wrong I love Ronnie, but Luke was special. "The best we've ever had", to quote Ronnie himself
only one luke kelly a brav e man sadly missed as are all the dubliners saw them many many times always a joy to see them and listen to their unique voices
what makes it even more beautiful is that his band knew he was dying as he performed this, look at them, they are desolate. i'll be happy to die just to have seen this
nice command but with time as it goes round and around to show us all as how we are, we WILL still have luke and the boys and the new boys to sing the lands love out there :) never forget those how are brave enough to stand up and sing there hearts out for our GREAT land and show this wide world why our small country stands all others to show that we the Irish are the soul of this PLANET! nice tune
I'm a big fan of both, and I find that fact interesting. Granted, much of the cause of Elvis's death was self-inflicted, whereas Luke died of the complications of a brain tumor.
I'm a 21 year-old American, born a generation after Luke Kelly made his mark in the hearts of the millions. However, I take this music as my own, because it is part of my heritage, and it is of a time I cannot visit again, but wish more than anything to do so. RIP Luke
Even when he looked his worst he sung like a god, blessings upon you luke and may you and every other member of the legend that has been the dubliners never be forgotten. . .
For a man that was very sick and on his death bed, i do not know how he got the strenght to pull his wonderful voice out once more for this song....best ballad singer that will ever grace the earth, Luke Kelly Respect..
I left my home last year . Co, Kildare after 33 years. What keeps me going is the dubliners, christy and Planxty to name a few. Ireland will never be the same. like it was years ago . Lov life my follow Irish ,
this is why ireland is the best little country on gods sweet earth, never mind the imf, ecb, money and greed which has cast our wonderful island into such pain and torment!! luke kelly is iconic and his music will be with us forever and in him we will find our way back from the pain and torment!!
I have lived in many countries , but nothing makes me more proud than to be Irish and to be from a country where our music sends shivers to your very core. We Are a great nation and a great people and altho at times things look bleak i take comfort in the fact that we are loved, respected and envied the world over. Never forget your past and always be proud to be Irish, because no country comes close to what we have ;)
I haven't watched this in a while. How can something so terribly sad be so completely wonderful at the same time? Poor, dear Luke fading before our eyes, yet so brave and dignified right until the end. It's almost a spiritual experience hearing Luke sing those sad, prophetic words, his voice strong and clear, as if to defy the end which he knew was near. I believe that all sad things have a certain beauty about them, and this performance is proof of that. RIP Luke.
I am so grateful for this and all the other videos of Luke and the Dubliners. Part of me wants to cry that so many of them are dead but mainly I rejoice that they lived.

A generation ago we gave the world Luke Kelly, Liam Clancy, Paul Brady, Planxty...now we're known for Jedward, Westlife, Ronan Keating, Bryan McFadden. In a way it's kind of fitting, culture always reflects the society that spawns it. The Celtic Tiger turned us into a bunch vapid, greedy, self-aggrandising muppets with no culture
@TomthatiscalledTom you hit the nail on the head, these had passion for music and not show boating. you can just imagine thses guys going for pints after this show and reflecting on there life together cause they knew what was around the corner.....kellyoneill we owe you a lot of gradittude.....without your videos this would be forgotten....i raise a toast........to luke
@TomthatiscalledTom So true but could be said about society as a whole, I am an englishman who Just loves all the great singers & groups you mention, there were of course many more that you & I know of. This particular Luke Kelly performance of the Night visiting song is, in my opinion, a masterpiece & when you think of the events [R.I.P Luke] that followed shortly after so poignant. I believe Ireland still has the culture but it is being overwhelmed by all the hype & promotion of rubbish.
@Teddyb1939 Well yes, I think it's not just Ireland, it's across western society generally. There's always ben a division between performers who just want to make a quick buck and those who want to say something about life. But there seems to be apathy now in our culture and a belief that we're just here to be consumers, nothing else. It's not just infantilised music , look at cinema, television or the newspapers, it's assumed we're all idiots, only interested in sex, sport and celebrity

If you see that you will only cry and cry and never stop.

@TomthatiscalledTom Sad but true. I'd love to be able to contradict you, but seems you've it pretty watertight there!!!

Teddyb1939 8 months ago
@Teddyb1939 Well yes, I think it's not just Ireland, it's across western society generally. There's always ben a division between performers who just want to make a quick buck and those who want to say something about life. But there seems to be apathy now in our culture and a belief that we're just here to be consumers, nothing else. It's not just infantilised music , look at cinema, television or the newspapers, it's assumed we're all idiots, only interested in sex, sport and celebrity
