though I would have to say that Halley's Comet is still a bit more rare of a event compared to the transit of Venus, since the average number of years that this transit takes place is every 67.8571429 years,

@faze3todd If you could look down on the solar system, you would see the Sun, Venus, & Earth lining up every 584 days (Venus completes 8 orbits for every 5 Earth orbits....almost, but not exactly). However, Venus' orbit is inclined 3.4° to Earth's orbit. So, when Venus lines up with the Sun & Earth, it is usually either above or below the Sun. It's only when the alignment occurs as Venus is crossing the plane of Earth's orbit that transits occur.

@narshtt Well venus is a tiny bit smaller than earth, but it is further away. Right now you are able to see it at night in the sky, shining brightly. It has been visible at night for the past 2 years, and now it will become visible during the daytime early sunrises and such in about may.

The last two transits 1882 and 2004 have been accompanied by great disasters within a year of them. 1883 Krakatoa and 2004 the massive earthquake,tsunami in Sumatra. The Mayans tracked the movement of one planet in particular-Venus. For what reason, we really can't say for sure. What is for sure is that a pattern of disaster is following the transits for some reason. Stay tuned.

in that animation venus is transiting the sun from the prospective that you are viewing from, not from the prospective from earth. Venus would be behind the sun if you were on earth at 5:15
i have seen that configuration of planets before - when it gets to the end it looks somewhat similar to a configuration on a sumerian cylinder seal....

@950horsepower I've heard recent speculation surrounding the theory that the sun itself is traveling, not stationary, and we 'spiral' around it, moving as well.Not technically 'orbiting' it.I wish I had a reference but I know with a little effort you can find this information. Personally, I don't know either way, as as humans, we fail miserably to see what's right in front of our face, let alone an astronomical unit away. Just a thought.

in that animation venus is transiting the sun from the prospective that you are viewing from, not from the prospective from earth. Venus would be behind the sun if you were on earth at 5:15

@950horsepower I've heard recent speculation surrounding the theory that the sun itself is traveling, not stationary, and we 'spiral' around it, moving as well.Not technically 'orbiting' it.I wish I had a reference but I know with a little effort you can find this information. Personally, I don't know either way, as as humans, we fail miserably to see what's right in front of our face, let alone an astronomical unit away. Just a thought.
