The reason why I like Metallica the best out of thrash bands was they werent afraid to try some slower, softer, more progressive stuff like this. It what set them apart. If some want to call that "selling out" or whatever they should eat a wiener, because most thrash bands outside of the Big 4 sound exactly the fuckin same to me.

Metallica's first 5 albums are untouched by any band to me. The variety is great and you can hear the influence they had in every song.

Just to get the details straight...

James had the idea for the song and wrote the lyrics before even knowing the book (Johnny Got His Gun) or movie existed. Someone in the crew, I think the tour manager or something, let him know about the book after reading his lyrics. He read it and later on the band made the video using clips from the movie from the '70's which was based on the book.
