@Zinefilika My Silent Love. Words & Music by Edward Heyman & Dana Seusse LYRICS: I reach for you like I'd reach for a star, Worshipping you from afar, living with my silent love; I'm like a flame dying out in the rain, Only the ashes remain, smouldering like my silent love; How I long to tell all the things I have planned, Still it's wrong to tell, you would not understand, You'll go along never dreaming I care, Loving somebody somewhere, leaving me my silent love.
Bela never got the kudos he deserved. Mae Questel was not on ly the voice of Betty Boop and Olive Oyl,but she also did Popeye for a short period of time,in the 30's,I believe.
Anyway Aaron i guess it doesnt matter, i Guess Mae Questel should get all the Credit, After all she was the Best Voice of the Aniamted character Betty Boop. so there we have it an end to who is who.
Helen Kane actually did sue Fleischer Studios, however she lost the suit because Max & Dave Fleischer were able to provide plenty of models (Mae, Bonnie, et al) to "prove" that Helen Kane's look was not unique. The boop-boop-ee-doop is actually lyrics from a song by Bert Kalmar & Harry Ruby, and not original to Helen Kane.
Helen Kane added the Scat Lyrics ( Boop Boop a Doop) into Kalmar & Ruby's Song - I Wanna Be Loved By You. and she became hit overnight. although she saw a black performer called Baby esther say something simuler in a club somewhere. If you listen to a few other versions of I Wanna be loved by you which was released in (1928) you will see that they're is no booping whatsoever.

This is Bonnie Poe, Not Betty Poe or Mae Questel. Mae Questel had already played Betty Boop in Musical justice in (1931) and she looks very diffrent to Bonnie Poe. Bonnie Poe worked for the fleischer studios for a short time. and made a one off live apperance in rambling round radio row in (1934), just after she had starred as Betty in This scene (1933). Mae Questel was Max fleischer's fav voice actress so of course she is going to get all the credit.
That's kinda weird. I like that scream though. I can't even scream, or try for that matter. My voicebox is all weird when I try. But I bet if I did scream I'd sound like that
@EmmaJaenghan231 It depends on the source, even on the Web I've found 2 different answers.... Lenoard Malton (film critic) claimed that this WAS Helen Kane as Betty, other sources say it's Mae and one source claims it's the original voice of Betty, Bonnie Poe...............So, unless someone can find a print with the credits attached, your guess is as good as mine!
@EmmaJaenghan231 Well, that's what I always was led to believe, but, as I said, I found several conflicting answers when I tried to find out "for sure"
No Emma, it was not Helen Kane, any such appearance as Betty Boop would have negated her $250000 claim against the fleischer studios. even historian Dr Raypointer pointed this out.
@EmmaJaenghan231 Well; I went on a long online trip and , judging by photos of Kane, Questel and Poe; I have to say that Bonnie Poe is the actress seen here. Her nose is round and flat, Helen had a pointed nose, her chin is round and receding, wheras Mae had a pointy chin and slimmer face, on the other hand, Poe had a flat round nose, receding chin, small overbite and identical jowls to the girl shown here... My final judgement is that I am 99% certain this is Bonnie Poe and not Kane or Mae
Helen Kane sued over the Impersonation of her as Betty Boop. any such appearance as Betty Boop would have negated her claim.
Besides the vocals dont make a match. you should watch Bonnie Poe perform Puddin'Head jones and the vocals make a perfect match. Mae Questel had already played Betty live in Musical Justice in (1931), From 1933 Bonnie poe seem's to have been working for the Fleischer Studios, she also did the deep debut voice for Olive oyl fom the popeye series.
@margiehines Yup, after a through perusal of pictures of the 3 main "suspects"; I also came to the conclusion that the actress in this short is Betty Poe....my former belief that it was Helen Kane herself came from the late film critic Leonard Maltin, who claimed the woman shown here was Helen (I guess even experts make mistakes).
@margiehines@margiehines Yup, after a through perusal of pictures of the 3 main "suspects"; I also came to the conclusion that the actress in this short is Bonnie Poe....my former belief that it was Helen Kane herself came from the late film critic Leonard Maltin, who claimed the woman shown here was Helen (I guess even experts make mistakes).
@Zinefilika ... I don't think it means anything in particular. It's just a play on words. Betty Boop is only a name. Boop doesn't mean anything in particular.
They didn't steal anyone's look. the cartoon character was created by the Fleischer studios and they used Helen Kane's voice as mimicked by Mae Q. None of the BB imitators nor Helen Kane actually looked like BB unless they were in costume as in the Dracula short.
I did some research and found that Richard Fleischer says it's Helen Kane and IMD (?) says it Mae. If you look at the other short with Rudy Vallee, you will see for sure it is not Mae. So I thing I'd go with Helen Kane. I have the actual short and it doesn't say anything as to who it is.
as far as who this is in the clip all I will add is check out other clps with Mae and Helen and there will be NO question Helen Kane is playing Betty in this one.
Betty Boop was totally based on Helen Kane, who was a popular singer back then. Clara Bow had nothing to do with anything. They made BB speak and sing just like Helen Kane. It is true Mae Q did the cartoon voice for BB, but the woman in the clip is HK, the actual "boop boop a doop girl" (as she was called back then and where they got the Boop from).
YouTube has other clips with Helen Kane, not made up to look like BB and will see it is in fact her and not MQ.
Well yes and no. They stole her look and her song, and combined it with Clara Bow's, but Mae Questel played Betty Boop through most of her existence, including this appearance.
Actually none of them wore a garter unless they were in a Betty Boop costume. BB was created by the Fleischer studio and was not visually a copy of anyone. Only Helen Kane's voice was copied by Mae Q. In addition, Richard Fleischer says it was Helen Kane in the Dracula short. Ciao
I assume she could still boop after Bela bit her. She would just be Undead and sleep all day and vamp all night, like Susan St. James did when G Hamilton bit her.
This is one of those rare film clips where you actually got to see Mae Questel perform the Betty Boop character in costume... and when she was young, as you can see, she actually managed to pull off looking like Betty pretty convincingly!
Hahahah, I figured she didn't say "bitch" but it sure sounded like it and it was hilarious fun entertaining the idea! "Fresh" makes more sense, wish people still said that! Fresh!
That was creepy. Wax figures coming to life. Dracula feeding on Betty Boop. Could you imagine her coming back as a vampire? "I want to suck your blood, boop-boop-be-boop!"
Betty Boop has led to my moral decay...so often have I had sinful and lascivious carnal yearnings for her cartoon flesh...mmm, Betty, you are my black and white desire...come and wrap your gartered legs around my head and squeeeeeezz!!
This is NOT Mae Questel. This is Bonnie Poe, one of the five women who did the voice of BETTY BOOP. The most famous and most often heard is Mae Questel. Bonnie Poe's voice was more "baby" like compared to Mae's voice, and she was also quite a bit "heavier" than Mae.
This is a great clip. I met Mae in 1982 and she autographed a still of this scene for me, but told me she never met Lugosi and that the lady here is actress Helen Kane.
Omg it's Aunt Bethany!

and Jack E. Shelby whom she married in Nov 19 1970 and who died of natural causes.

Well yes and no. They stole her look and her song, and combined it with Clara Bow's, but Mae Questel played Betty Boop through most of her existence, including this appearance.

No its Bonnie poe As Helen kane
helen kane never ever wore a Garter Only the character Betty Boop Did
Cresantstar 2 years ago 2
Actually none of them wore a garter unless they were in a Betty Boop costume. BB was created by the Fleischer studio and was not visually a copy of anyone. Only Helen Kane's voice was copied by Mae Q. In addition, Richard Fleischer says it was Helen Kane in the Dracula short. Ciao

I Have Seen the Dvd they Do not admit anything about the past, Certain things from some Vhs are wrong.
they wont even Give Grim natwick Creator of betty boop Full Credit
I have the VHS and it says that That is HelenKane, Becuse thats who betty boop portrays, But in Fact it is Bonnie Poe.
also you are a bit Wrong, Mae Questel Did imitate Helen kane But The Earlier betty Boop Cartoons had diffrent voices
otzi08 2 years ago 2
I assume she could still boop after Bela bit her. She would just be Undead and sleep all day and vamp all night, like Susan St. James did when G Hamilton bit her.

i like her singing (she actually looks like the real betty boop!) hate the bit at the end wiv dracula though!!!!!!
ACWWgirl101 3 years ago
This is one of those rare film clips where you actually got to see Mae Questel perform the Betty Boop character in costume... and when she was young, as you can see, she actually managed to pull off looking like Betty pretty convincingly!
jzerony 3 years ago 2
Why, yes she did!
Any clue as to where the poster got this from?

hoipolloi890 3 years ago 2
Hahahah, I figured she didn't say "bitch" but it sure sounded like it and it was hilarious fun entertaining the idea! "Fresh" makes more sense, wish people still said that! Fresh!

That was creepy. Wax figures coming to life. Dracula feeding on Betty Boop. Could you imagine her coming back as a vampire? "I want to suck your blood, boop-boop-be-boop!"

That's not Bela Lugosi.
popped 3 years ago
Yes it is
JESSESIKORA 3 years ago
Well the close up is, but that's taken from Dracula itself. The dracula in the rest of the shots is a different actor.

Betty Boop has led to my moral decay...so often have I had sinful and lascivious carnal yearnings for her cartoon flesh...mmm, Betty, you are my black and white desire...come and wrap your gartered legs around my head and squeeeeeezz!!

"You have booped your last boop"
I wasn't expecting that XD
this is great.
skateHYPE 3 years ago 2
This is NOT Mae Questel. This is Bonnie Poe, one of the five women who did the voice of BETTY BOOP. The most famous and most often heard is Mae Questel. Bonnie Poe's voice was more "baby" like compared to Mae's voice, and she was also quite a bit "heavier" than Mae.

This is a great clip. I met Mae in 1982 and she autographed a still of this scene for me, but told me she never met Lugosi and that the lady here is actress Helen Kane.
