How many commentators have the slightest conception of how to "OBJECTIVELY" judge the merits of any given piece of music? Another words, besides your ("tin" or deaf) ear, musically speaking, can you even begin to clearly and accurately state what elements in place set a song apart? There is just barely passing, fair or all right, good, excellent, and then the top of the heap meaning outstanding or great. This, to my ears and knowledge of music, is without doubt at the top among the greatest.
A beautiful voice and singer, along with her fellow band members. Fleetwood Mac, like a very large number of other bands, stood the test of time with enormous success for a reason. Stevie's voice and heart while singing are one of the major reasons. ".. Time makes you bolder ...Children get older... Now I'm getting older too.." Lyrics that I can clearly recall decades later. There ARE standards other than just a person's entirely subjective opinion to judge the quality of a musical work by.
I am sorry I just have to say this. I am not a hater first of all. But... Lady Gaga and similar artists are being called unique for writing songs that doesnt involve any feelings or wearing strange outfits... In the musical meaning I must say Stevie's voice is unique. I always feel like talking to myself while listening to it. It's because neither the vocals or instruments occupy my head. It gives you space to think about stuff the song was written about. Thanks to Stevie for not oversinging!
It's quite funny reading the comments of pissant underachievers regarding her voice/tonal ranges/octave span or hair color, but I'll put forth the theory that sheer record sales invalidate the opinions of pre-teen nobodies in this particular case.
You know, I love rock. I love the classics, I love hard rock, I even love a bit of metal. But no matter how much I love them, I know that this is the kind of music I really love. This is what comes to my mind when I think of beauty. Those words are the best sound I have ever heard.
this is gold, PURE GOLD!!!!!! This from a jazz, reggae and R&B fan......She is SPOT-ON with her tone and voice control.......Fuck those that make fun of her voice....She is ALWAYS within herself and what she can do vocally. This is an absolute masterpeice!!!!!! RESPECT!!!!!!
@OftenMisled go read the bibble most of its untrue because they culdnot understand my writing they had to remember when they where one with me do the weard math im not stupid there is no higher being than me i dont know what you do but i love ya
this song always makes me cry cause I first heard it in the movie Jack Frost. It played after the little boys father died and I still to this day bawl my eyes out. lol
Stevie has an amazing voice. She never disappoints when you see her live. Can't say the same for many other artists. If you ever have the chance to see her perform live, don't pass it up.
In my youth i always though this was a break up song, and as such it didn't make the right sense. now as a father of a daughter, and hearing this version of it with it being dedicated to her father......
Anyone who thinks her voice is bad, truly has no concept tone and octave ranges. She has is a mid alto - tenor range. Not every female singer needs to have a high soprano range like Adelle and Kelly clarkson to sound good, she isn't flat or sharp on any of her notes throughout this song. She has perfect pitch but rather a smaller range. She is a pioneer and truly inspirational; this is comming from someone who isn't the greatest fan of fleetwood mac, yet I can still see the skill she has.
@a0522625 i think she has a great voice and very unique i am only 30 and am a fan!!!!!! love her would love to see her in concert with my mom, at every stage in my life this song has had a different meaning!!!!! Shes great
@a0522625 It's not her vocal range that makes her special--Adele, like many female vocalists today, is far from a soprano--it's her voice. No one really has a voice like Stevie Nicks, which I think is why not everybody likes her.
This song, and Stevie Nicks, are much to me like a fine aged wine. In having been around the block for so long, it has only gotten better and more flavorful, the sound so much more honest and poignant. If there were ever a "correct" way to feel sadness, this would be that way.
@SCOTTpilgrimist12 well that's because you're a old man who's life has passed him by. you need to suck it up and get over it and deal with the fact that you blew oppritunities and haven't lived life to the fullest. you got nobody to blame but yourself
@rudemood2011 You need to be a certain age to be on youtube and if you know that i'm '20', then calling me an old man just makes you seem like a moron.
@SCOTTpilgrimist12 i checked out your profile after you told me you were 13. saying that it really gets to you when stevie sings the part about getting older when you're 13 years old just make any sense
@rudemood2011 just quit talking shit kid that guy said a lyric means something to him and u just talk shit.. nobody likes an ass mouth like u always spewing shit
I love this song it's the best ever this song will always be in my heart. This made me who I am now when I was little my mom was never there but when I listen too this song it always made my day better I don't know what I will with out song =)
There will NEVER be another performance like this. For those not in the know, there is a long history between Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham that informs this performance and makes it as spellbinding and as stunning as it is. It's not just the words or the music. It's the looks they give each other, the looks on their faces, the inflections in Stevie's voice for specific lines – the whole package. This was a rare moment of live performance perfection.
This song was playing when my best friend and I crossed the border from alaska in to the yukon and the mountains all around us as we drove along the AlCan blasting it singing away =)
@ Candice, I feel and this is only my personal opinion, that if these 30 years spent with a man have brought you in some way happiness, then who cares what everyone else thinks!!
You enjoy him and enjoy your grandbabies because life is too short to worry about what others think about us!!
It's a remarkable thing...Stevie Nicks really has a horrible voice, I think. But her cadence is brilliant playing with Lindsay.....and that's why this is simply lovely!
@DickLodge68 Another one who's hard of hearing. Stevie has an awesome voice. You should get your dick out that lodge and focus on getting cochlear implants.
@HellBlazerRaiser You don't know me from Adam, so shut your fucking pie-hole! If you did know me, you'd know that Dick Lodge is a stage name and meant as a joke. It's just my opinion that Stevie Nicks sings like crap. It's also my opinion that you're a jackass! You can disagree with me, that's fine, but you had to say something stupid...you Hell blazer raiser? I could care less what your name is or names.
@HellBlazerRaiser I don't "hate" anyone. Stevie Nicks has the voice of a frog rattling around in a tin bucket. That's just my opinion...you can have yours. Instead you decided to attempt some humor about my name here. That's so juvenile, and I called you on it. I don't hate you...I just think you're a jackass!
@HellBlazerRaiser Yep, she sounds like a frog rattling around in a tin bucket, as I said. Now, it wouldn't surprise me if she sang the "C'mon my baby, c'mon my honey..." Now that was funny that you mentioned Michigan J. Frog. On the other hand, are you a vocalist or a musician? Ever been in bands? I have and I can tell you the same thing. Her voice is horrible but her cadence and timing is fantastic. Why you are offended by that other than I called you a jackass is beyond me.
I have been married to a man for 30 years, and we are both 54 years old, and I have built my life around him and my kids, and now I am doing with my grandchildren. Some people think I am nuts I need to know what other people that don't know me think.
@candicekyliejames People think you're nuts because you've been married for 30 years and are now raising grandchildren? I don't get it, what's nuts about that? Sounds like a picture of normality.
@cigs I am 18 years old and definitely consider myself among the younger crowd. This is one of the first songs I can remember listening to, and it may not take me back 30 years when I hear it, but it does take me back.
There will NEVER be another performance like this. her voice is like no other. i actually feel the emotion in the song unlike most songs today. i can feel the passage of time, even though i'm young. classic, haunting song
A FANTASTIC SONG from STEVIE NICKS with Lindsey Buckingham - I have so MUCH RESPECT for her, she gave up so much for Fleetwood Mac - dedicated her whole life to the band & contributed greatly to its success.
Fleetwood Mac was always a brilliant band. I feel a lot of their songs are a musical history of the band. I hope people will look up their earlier music with the older and much loved crew too, which had such talents in Peter Green and Danny Kirwan.

@ayram617 Stevie Nicks was young when she wrote this song, I don't think you really grasp the meaning of the song at all.

Rock on forever Fleetwood Mac!
