I've shed a few tears over time due to crashes. After a while you learn to live with that, but this is horrendous damage. You must have been heartbroken to see your heli like this...
completly gutted out :/ joys of flying electric i guess,
to help avoid this on my choppers, i insulate the wires with electrical tape to help avoid short outs, i also always fly with a bec seperate from the esc, as a common cause of lipo fires are due to hardware failing causing a short killing the lipo, it may also help fitting a fuse to the live on the esc battery wires, then atleast if it becomes under load it will only pop the fuse
The aluminum frame on the Quick caused the short on impact setting the lipopacks on fire. Many years of flying lipos and this is a first. They can also catch fire if not maintained or used properly.Otherwise they are OK and certainly hard to beat - peformance-wise that is.
Overcharge, charging with wrong cell count (3 cell being charged as 6 cell), bad connection causing short, leaving the batteries under the sun or near heat source (heater), and so on.
Agreed. However, that is the ideal spot for most 500 size helis where a gyro can mount and still be accessible. In this case the fire got to the gyros not the blades.
i reckon it will be cheaper to buy a whole new heli :) sorry for your loss, although this doesn't happen all the time, even if your extremely careful, this is bound to happen atleast once, it is the risk you take when using them, also, compared to Ni-MHs and Ni-Cads li-pos are just in another league
if you buy an estinguisher, all your throat will be estinguished when u are saying stupid things. It may also be helpfull if you have this kind of problems with a burning lipo... :) cost, about 50 bucks...
There's nothing stupid about that, you just apparently translate as you read, so that you can understand it. Most people don't have hours a day to sit around watching batteries with a fire extinguisher, but you probably have that time and no life, so that's your solution. Anyone can type in "LiPO fire" and "LiPO explosion" into youtube's search and see what a huge problem this is. I have seen one that caused $30,000 damage to a house. Nothing to laugh about or take less seriously.
You're probably one of those die-hard RC heli pilots who won't believe it until it happens to you. In some cases, putting the battery into a ceramic pot or "LiPO bag" do NOT prevent a fire or toxic gas from being released. In fact, LiPO bags ALLOW toxic gas to be released. That's not something you want in your house.
Thanks Peter. Tail boom and tail assembly remain undamaged. The lipo fire melted everything else in a few minutes. It's worth pointing out the fume is serious toxic stuff you'd want to stay away from.
thats not bad, thats hell ass funny! if it was gas though that shouldn't be costly.

That is so sad. :-(, but when it ignited, couldn't you just throw the lipo out, to save the rest of the stuff?
elmardus 1 year ago
@elmardus Good point - it ignited seconds on impact at about 400 feet - the fumes toxic and by the time discovered there wasn't much left.

@puggster Good suggestions. In this case cell number 3 was damaged upon impact. A metal housing may have prevented fire.

Time to get a New Heli!!!

Thats why Lipos are made for. To burn RC models when they crash. This makes any RC fan the ultimate consumer :)

When you say not maintained or used properly, what exactly do you mean..?

This is EXACTLY why I refuse to use LiPo's...though so many heli pilots keep saying, "You're overrating the risk of LiPo's, blah, blah, blah."
