shame is in this age of american idol and mtv most this stuff will remain undiscovered to most of the world, and it's a poorer place for it. i guess that makes us the lucky ones! keep the music alive!
The Saturday night midnight jam of Wanee is always so awesome and Susan and Derek and the band just rock out one of my favorite versions ever of the song. Great closer to a killer festival!
I love how people on other vids, not this one really, of Derek playing the weight try to tear his playing down because he supposedly stole Aretha's version, or they try and label his playing as 'generic'. You're kidding right? I don't see how you can even argue about it! The man knows his instrument upside down, inside out, and sideways, and still has so much room for growth. I don't know how anyone can seriously doubt this man's talents. But I guess everyone's a critic, right?
Great version?? It is an awesome take on a hallmark song!! Not too many people could get away with it. Suzy can get away with singing anything. Ever hear her version of the John Prine classic "Angel From Montgomery"?? This girl made an amature out of Bonnie Rait. Tedeschi needs to get her props. She's way under rated. I also got my ear on Derek as well. His lead on The Government Mule take on an Alman Bros. classic "Soulshine" is a keeper.
That was a perfect ending to a perfect weekend of some GREAT music. I can't picture exactly where my brothers and I were for that midnight jam. I've been to all four Wanee Fests so far and had a great f'n time each year. Hopefully Greg's recovery goes well. I missed The Allman's this past wanee!
SWEEEET! How fortunate Susan and Derek are to find not just careers they love, and do it well, but to have found one another as well. *Sigh*... gotta agree too many people are willing to critique things they know nothing about, myself included ;)
Fabulous vocals, but this arrangement is the same as the one Aretha Franklin did many years ago. Don't get me wrong, Tedeschi has a phenomenal voice and Trucks is inspiring (in spite of what all you guitar wanks say. God, I wish you guys would stop with "He's no so good." Or "So and so" was better. You're all just a bunch of mediocrities who will never get out of your garages.)
The special thing about this arrangement is Aretha Franklin & Duane Allman once performed it together. Derek Trucks is somewhat seen as Duane reincarnated. Not to mention he plays with the Allman Brothers now. If you were there that weekend, you'd better understand.
I agree with the arrangement angle, what I like is that the performers still stayed enough within their own style of performance within that arrangement. Susan sang Susan, not Aretha. She can't, but she's a phenomenal Susan.
Its a great version...I have been to all the Wanee's so far and I look forward to the Saturday midnite jam's every year, and then get depressed cause it's all over and I have to wait another year..I love when they play together ,kinda like a family band ala Allman Brothers
Quick question? Is it hard to get away from Duane and Derek for influences, or do they dominate the scene as far as players to look up to and emulate? How hard is it to find your own sound compared to more traditional pick-style players?
Slide players today come from a long tradition of players who have based their style off of other's playing. Duane learned slide from listening to old blues greats like Blind Willie McTell, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Son House, Robert Johnson and later Taj Majal. He put his own spin on their art form and made it his own. Derek inadvertently picked up on this long line of learning- listening to Duane's stuff and eventually branching out in his own unique style.....
Yes it is good to refer to the two electric masters, but lest not forget the first bottle neck and dobro slingers of yore. More attention needs to be payed to the original slide players like those previously listed (including muddy waters and electric chicago blues)if one seeks to develop a unique style not dominated by one or two people like duane and derek who have controlled the scene for so long.
Thanks for the insight. I'm a drummer, and find I move "backwards" in my listening. I hear something I like, and explore the people who influenced them. I read an article stating the challenge some slide players, in particular, have in finding new influences, as Derek has. That was the root of my question. I've got a million drummers, dj's, programmers, and tribes to influence me. Thanks again!
I love both to death, but I think listening to only duane and derek imedes someone's ability to branch out as they did. We need to take in influences from other places as well, for example, derek's deep seated love of middle-easter and indian music which frequents the voicings in many of his songs. Do not forget the tradition of the masters now and before us, but explore new frontiers of the slide and continue to develop it as the art form that it is.
"Derek is excellent but derivative of other slide masters."
No, sorry that just isn't right. You might as well say that blues is derivative of classical music. Or that every single musician in the world is derivative because everythings been played before. As for slide players though, you don't find anything close to derek after 71' considering allman was the only thing close.
I got goose bumps when I saw this video posted!! I was ther too!! Some music you have to listen to, some music ya gotta see!!! I though the previous year's late night jam was even hotter, and this one smokes! I've been to all the wannee fests and love the spirit of the suwanee music park as a venue!
People you pick it apart all you want and compare this to that...in the end it's all just your your own darn opinion...Go See Live Music!!!
yea yea i have to comment on this video... even though this wasnt derrick trucks performance as a band the mid night jam was bad ass.... i was at this show awesome video
I'm surprised you have yet to be hit by lighting. I respect you have the opinion but perhaps not enough research. Duane was a master at many phases of guitar playing and Derek is excellent but derivative of other slide masters.Susan can play guitar better than most professional men but Janis? Janis Joplin singing? Susan can sing but she isn't Janis IMHO and that's all it is an opinion- Thanks for the great post- it's great music!
i have every album the brothers put out with duane, and there is no doubt duane is better than derek. duane did things with the instrument that no one else has. to a certain extent derek is reinventing the instrument himself. in my opinion duane is the greatest of all time. i feel that susan is just overall a better musician than janis. but hey everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and i respect yours. lets just hope this awesome music continues
if no one has gone to wanee before i recommend it. it is the best two days of music around. great musicians playing the best music. derek trucks is god
Aretha? Does no one remember the version of "The Weight" that she did? Susan most DEFINITELY took from the key of that. Come on. She's super-talented and my favorite artist, by far, but I'd heard Aretha a LONG time before this, and it's eerily similar.
I'd love to here a great mix of this show...

Lookup the phrase "fuckin kickass" in the dictionary and a photo of Derek Trucks in the middle of a slide solo is right there.

On another note... if you can mimic Derek or Duane, you have done well already. Making it original wouldn't be too hard after that IMO.
