Love this song..is that Nigel on the drums in this song? Good drummer whoever it is..phat and steady beats. The beat reminds me of Hot Child in the City.
I've always wondered why Nigel Olsson didn't make it big in a solo career. He certainly has talent and a good voice. I loved his solo albums.
Hearing this again makes me remember the better parts of the 1970s. He and Elton were the bright parts of a somewhat dismal decade, but still... there were some magical things from back then that can never be duplicated nor repeated.
Holy cow! I KNEW I wasn't imagining things! I have been looking for this version for ages, but the closest one I could find was Paul Davis and it just didn't sound quite right. I was only 9 years old at the time and didn't have my own radio to control, so piecing together who sang what has been hard enough without there being multiple versions and rare ones! Thank you for finally clearing this mystery up for me!
I had forgotten this! Nigel's big hit was "Put on Your Dancing Shoes". I saw him perform both live at McNichols Arena in Denver, Colorado during an Elton john concert. I was 20. Think about it... Nigel had been doing background vocals for Sir Elton for ten years at that time, and very beautifully at that time. It was time for Nigel to shine. Alas, McNichols Arena is now gone, and Nigel has faded from our memories.
This recording is one of my favorites from the late 70's It's so rare, I didn't think anybody had a copy or would post it on YouTube. Thanks for doing that, weaseldoc.
When I first heard this (and Nigel's rendition of "Say Goodbye to Hollywood" by Billy Joel), I thought it was Peter Cetera. Nigel's voice certainly sounds as good, proving brilliently that, "Drummers can sing too." I'd love the chance to work with a drummer fitting his description someday.
Produced by the late Paul Davis, who covered it himself in the early '70s. Nigel's version hit #9 AC, #34 pop in Billboard. Did it chart in the UK? God bless!
Absolutely awesome song! Brings back such good memories. I think I'll send it to my friends from back then who made fun of me for loving this song... :)
What memories a song can bring back...I graduated in '79 and was on my way to college...I let my daughter hear this song and she laughed at me...Did we have great music back then or what!!
@doug483 . We had the best music back then. I graduated high school in '77. Now my niece and nephew don't seem to understand our stuff. But as well I don't get their stuff at all.
I haven't heard this song since Memorial Day weekend in May of 1979. I was only 15 back then. I remember I was camping in Cannon Falls, Minnesota and hearing it on my portable radio while laying in my tent in my sleeping bag. 30 years just melted away in an instant for me. I had just got done with 9th grade and I was so crazy about Ann back then.
is this the top 40 remake from the 70's or was it showaddywaddy? i like nigel's better, but can't remember the artist from the 70's whose version made it onto the top 40.
Thanks for adding this! Wow! It has been 30 years since I heard this version; it's never played on radio anymore! A true blast from the past!
A Little Bit of Soap was one of the top 40 songs the week of April 14, 1979, when I purchased my first issue of Billboard Magazine. "What a Fool Believes", "I Will Survive" and "Knock on Wood" occupied the top 3 that week.
OMG you have no idea how long i have searched for this song...I absolutely loved it...i was like 13 or 14 when this came out....thank you so much for putting it on here!!
"Nigel" hasn't been released because as a whole, it stunk! I own this album on vinyl and sometimes regret buying it. One slow song after the other. Nigel is a great singer and drummer but not a good song writer. Still I must say that this track stands out.
I was so lucky to meet nigel olsson at an east end lights expo one time i got his autograph and also davey johnstone and pictures taken with them too,it was a moment i will never forget, it still gives me chills when i think about it.
Yeah this was a single in April 1979. It went to #34 on Billboards top 40 chart. Great song, and I LOVE the keyboard solo in it! This was the follow-up single to his maga-hit "Dancing Shoes". Too bad that his nigle lp has never been released on cd!
This is an awesome song. I haven't heard it since I was a kid. Thanks for posting it. By the way, Nigel was Elton John's drummer. Who says drummers can't sing?
I remember listening to this song on the radio when I was a kid in 1979. I really loved it, but I never knew who sang it until recently. I tried for a long time to find it but I couldn't. I think this is the best version of this song I've ever heard. This really brings back some good memories. Thanks a million for posting this!
I knew this song was in 1979. I too remember this version. I was about 15 or 16 at the time of it's release. I remember because this song reminded me of the various songs of the time with the same sort of style at that time. I'm glad you posted your comment. I was right.
