Leona co-wrote quite a bit over half of the songs of Echo inlcuding Happy, Naked, Can't Breathe and Don't let me down, all amazing songs... and she was involved in writing a couple of songs of Spirit, like Whatever it Takes. She also co-wrote Glassheart (the song), which is easily one of her best songs, which says a lot.

@llcbp Yes, it was slightly worse than the studio version due to some minor pitch issues. She didn't engage with it any more emotionally and the instrumental arrangement, as on the recorded version, completely undermined the tone of the song making nonsense of the lyrics.
Leona Lewis stole the show. She sang the hell out of 'Hurt'. I am the biggest Leona fan, have her book, dvd, all her albums, seen her live and that, however I prefer the Johnny Cash version. Yes the song is dark, so what? Who cares, stop knocking down an incredible talent to have actually come out of The X Factor.
I've realized what is maddening about this cover. It's not that she covered it. but that it was pretentious and vain in it's entirety. I'm not a Leona Lewis fan and expected her to ruin this song - but this is as good as Cash's version. Different, but as good! I first heard her sing it on the X factor, and it's easily the best thing I've ever heard on there.
I came here to listen to this because I love NIN and love the Cash version (maybe more). I really wanted to hate this version. I was surprised when I almost started to like it but then from 2:20 onwards my worst fears became real. Why did they do that? I had to mute it just so I could keep writing! It could have been a good cover but then as an X Factor judge would say 'you made it your own girl!'. Yes, she made a great song into yet another terrible pop song. X Factor ruins music again!!
I like Leona Lewis. But this version lacks the emotion of the original and Cash's cover. Awful, awful version- her voice simply does not convey the rawness, the pain, the sheer hopelessness that the lyrics portray so brilliantly. Listen to Johnny Cash doing this- it's hugely poignant, and will make you stop whatever you're doing to listen to the lyrics. It will make you cry if you're feeling low. Lewis' version does not have the same effect, it doesn't even come close. It is bland in comparison.

I am a massive NIN Fan, and i like to see this being covered. Trent should be recognised for his fantastic songs by everyone of any Genre, since over the years NIN have blended into so many Genres.

I know there have been singers who were a lot better than here. I won't say she's the best. What I meant is that Leona is one of the best singers, if not the best, of this century, by far. At the moment, in this century (and don't count singers like Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston, because they are singing since the 80's-90's), Leona is one of the best singers, definitely. Technically she's amazing, she can do what Mariah did in the 90's.

This is painfully bad. I've never heard of this lady before, but her cover version of this song is absolutely awful. Her voice is adequate, but it doesn't suit this song at all. Doesn't she have some sort of managers or advisers who can tell her how ridiculous trying to cover a song like this would be for her?

Gosh, hurt is like 16 years old. It was about time some artist reinvented that song and it does have to be another dying old man or drugy for the song to awsome once again. Personally, i like leonas version the best because her vocals are better than both trent and cash's plus she's made the song more current for a younger crowd that aren't really familiar with the song. This song, for whatever reason, reminds me one of those machines where you put a couple of quarters in---------- and out comes some crap you dont need, dont want, and isnt even whats advertised on the front of the machine. Cheap, plastic, and in a way--- youre almost glad when it finally breaks because you never really wanted it anyway.

@llcbp Yes, it was slightly worse than the studio version due to some minor pitch issues. She didn't engage with it any more emotionally and the instrumental arrangement, as on the recorded version, completely undermined the tone of the song making nonsense of the lyrics.

Leona Lewis stole the show. She sang the hell out of 'Hurt'. I am the biggest Leona fan, have her book, dvd, all her albums, seen her live and that, however I prefer the Johnny Cash version. Yes the song is dark, so what? Who cares, stop knocking down an incredible talent to have actually come out of The X Factor.

I've realized what is maddening about this cover. It's not that she covered it. but that it was pretentious and vain in it's entirety. It lacks the emotion and the meaning of the original song or Cash's cover which gate it a new level of depth. It was made to sound pretty and in doing so only works to destroy the emotion built by the original. While its nice to listen too, it has no substance. The song was never meant to be pretty. It was meant to display the pain of the singer

The reason people are upset by this cover is because it's rubbish.
It's fine when whichever faceless nobody who won a talent show ruins their own short careers by producing bland, faceless music - whatever, leave them to it.
But when they ruin already existing good music with their bland, fake, bland, hyperreal, bland, tacky, bland versions - well that's when people have a problem.

I can understand why people are upset and angry at this cover; a lot of people relate to the original and Cash's, the song carries a huge amount of sentiment. Don't kid yourselves Lewis fans, Leona has not had the experiences of Trent Reznor and Cash. She can't sing this song with conviction- that is why people do not like her covering it. I'm listening to her version of Iris now and I'm finding the same thing, I just don't believe she FEELS the lyrics. I think she's way better doing originals.

Do you think she knows she's covered NIN? Even so this song is so much better performed by NIN and Johnny Cash. When mainstream pop artists take a gem like this song and inject into the 'popular charts' it just dirties it up and takes the beauty away, thats why so many people have disliked this.

I came here to listen to this because I love NIN and love the Cash version (maybe more). I really wanted to hate this version. I was surprised when I almost started to like it but then from 2:20 onwards my worst fears became real. Why did they do that? I had to mute it just so I could keep writing! It could have been a good cover but then as an X Factor judge would say 'you made it your own girl!'. Yes, she made a great song into yet another terrible pop song. X Factor ruins music again!!

I like Leona Lewis. But this version lacks the emotion of the original and Cash's cover. Awful, awful version- her voice simply does not convey the rawness, the pain, the sheer hopelessness that the lyrics portray so brilliantly. Listen to Johnny Cash doing this- it's hugely poignant, and will make you stop whatever you're doing to listen to the lyrics. It will make you cry if you're feeling low. Lewis' version does not have the same effect, it doesn't even come close. It is bland in comparison.

I am a massive NIN Fan, and i like to see this being covered. Trent should be recognised for his fantastic songs by everyone of any Genre, since over the years NIN have blended into so many Genres.
That said, Piano is a little funny, but her voice is fantastic!

I know there have been singers who were a lot better than here. I won't say she's the best. What I meant is that Leona is one of the best singers, if not the best, of this century, by far. At the moment, in this century (and don't count singers like Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston, because they are singing since the 80's-90's), Leona is one of the best singers, definitely. Technically she's amazing, she can do what Mariah did in the 90's.
