Heading uo the remarks Rd in the summer is Sweet As...the best free thing to do in Q-town. I talk about the two great tracks up above the remarks lodge in my new guidebook. cheers....don't miss the remarks when in Queenstown!!
Hehe, you can always spot the tourists :) Try coming up and down that road with one of the locals! 120kph as standard on the straights.
Came down on one of the big buses once (just 3 staff on it) and the driver began to explain how they were built specifically for driving on roads like this, then proceeded to launch down the road at 100+. It's fine in a car, but in a bus it's insane!
an awesome road-had a Bus i used to drive up-was 10speed transmission.
great for drifting-when it was relly gnarly you'd have chains on the front single on the rear with icesbreakers then doubles over the singles also with icebreakers. Gnarliest run ever took me over 4 hours to get up and off the mountain with staff on-white out conditions heavy snow covering sheet ice-WICKED mountain to drive!!!
We went up there one night to experience the snow on the road and it was fine , until we passed the road groomer that compressed the snow into an ice rink, we lost traction and decided to stop and put the chains on.
I put the hand brake on, but the car slid backwards towards the edge (2004)
It eventually stopped just before the edge.
So we got out to put the chains on and instantly slid down the road.
We eventually crawled with our fingers back to the car and put the chains on
haha, i've done it a like 5 times, 5 up and 5 down. its not that bad, even did it without chains when we were supposed to have chains. take it easy and let people pass if you need.

crashed into the mountain last year in heavy snowfall after a day of boarding - we were hugging the mountain too tightly.
This road is terrifying when it's slippery!
