mad props handling those sticky pods yourself. Surprised you didn't find paste but found pods. If you want a recommendation that's easy and for me has been excellent quality across the board, SWAD sells blocks of wet tamarind, nothing but tamarind, in an airtight vac seal and that is inside the retail packaging. Raja foods imports it. Almost all SWAD stuff is way above average (chefs use it) for stuff that's affordable, kosher (Jewish markets sell their spices&fruits;INDIAN markets sell it all!)
@Blackerer The body processes free glutamic acid differently from glutamates that are bound to macronutrients (proteins/lipids/carbs); the short answer=free glutamic acid is absorbed before it ever gets to the lower GI tract &causes a neurological response that is very painful for people who don't eat it regularly; it sends a brief flood of seratonin&norepinephrine followed by a crash; the rest the gut handles normally. MSG is a CNS stimulant like cocaine-brain activity spike&crash then craving.

Tomatoes are full of msg is like saying apples are full of aspartame.
We're not against naturally occurring glutamates.
