The jet engine on the back did blow but when it did it sent pieces of it into the plane and it cut the hydraulic lines. They was all three independent but it took them all out so they had no controls.

At 1:06 when the engine blows, 232 was already in a turn which is why it was stuck in a downward spiral for most of the event.

@airplanenut89 The sim also initially shows UA 232 in a left hand turn when the #2 engine explodes, then switches views and shows the aircraft in a right hand turn. If I'm mistaken they were in a right turn when they lost all hydraulics

You are not mistaken. I've always been told that 232 was in a right turn as well. However, I think I remember hearing something on one of the many programs about 232 that the crew eventually got one left turn in during the desent to help line up the approach. I could be mistaken about that left tuen though.
