  • beautiufl song so gona learn how to play this

  • ❤ I love rickie lee jones ❤

  • She is a National Treasure!

  • From the first note sung I found myself lost in her tone. Amazing!

  • FREAKIN LOVIN IT.....now I KNOW how it came to be in the 70's. Imagine her gat springin in front of the band convincing/showing her sounds as an outofit teen+! Hah! Music is soooo phreakin an tois! Lurv her music...now how do I press today's ignorance.....Let's just 4give idiots that don't hear it...not worth the effort!

  • Who are the idiots that dislike this, you are crazy

  • Not the same without Steve Gadd.

  • I love that song, you are so brave to do that dry-And you still sound GREAT

  • Check her out singing background vocals with John Mellencamp on Between a laugh and a tear . It's been one of my favorites for years . It's off Scarecrow from 1985 .

  • Awesome

  • ellel pue des cordes vocales!

  • Just remember what a great singer songwriter she was. I am 47, and just rediscovering Rikki!

  • My parents named me after Rickie Lee Jones. I'm so glad they named me after such an amazing artist. <3

  • I was in labor with my second child..a daughter...I kept repeating this song and the Hail Mary-what does that say? when my daughter was an infant my husband and our son & I would dance around her swing/seat and sing this song. Both of my kids were born in AF Hospital because my husband was in VietNam. My husband didn't even see his son until he was6 months old. He was lucky enough to be there for this birth of his daughter. I only hope that the returning vets have this much hope & love

  • she still sends shivers down my spine. Love you Rickie.

  • The sweetest thing

  • 32 years later...still amazing!

  • WOW !

  • Awesome!

  • My brother DRew said that ur hot

  • 17 people still go to the pool hall.

  • Wow.

  • what a great live version, she sounds so perfect here.... thanks for sharing. RLJ Rocks!

  • You put everything you got on-the-line when you sing your hit song and are accompanied by only the guitar you're playing and, in Ricki's instance, the beautiful voice that God gave ya. Ricki is such an assured performer. Thank you Rickie Lee Jones.

  • This would be the perfect song for Naima Adedapo on American Idol.

  • knock out..totally influential

  • You still got it girl!

  • Rickie still sounds fantastic. Thanks!

  • kewl, I've never heard her before. Love the style and music. Kewl.

  • @TonySpenc - plp is a "public leaning post" which just means kind of like to hang out and a meter is a parking meter (at least I think so!).

  • She still BAD! Go'head Rickie Lee, I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED THIS SONG, Five *'s

  • Ohh this is the true Rickie Lee you are the best Ive heard Rickie don't let that go??

  • Just wanna thank's dEUS' song Hotellounge that made me discover this artist ^^

    Wonderful dialogue inside good music...

  • A girlfriend introduced me to the first album, before Chuck E was even on the radio (she also had Steely Dan before anyone knew who they were, what a cool girl, and she could sing jazz too, but was way too shy to do it pro :( ).

So here I am 30+ years later, and the song still gets you. The best is her smile at the end - she's played it a zillion times but she'll play it again just for you.

Seen her twice in London, UK. I'm a Brit, but never been able to find out what plp or the meter means.

  • im the only 1997 girl that i know that loves this song (:

  • I'm in love all over again and always will be from now on. A truly unique soulful woman.

  • way cool

  • Chuck isn't Chuck E Weiss?

    Then who?

  • I LOVE CHUCKIES

  • Comment removed

  • way to go south for a great response to supertruth's vitriol..pathetic just about sums it up...always a great tune forever.

  • Man. What a nice song. But sad, given the context. This was round the time Waits was starting to get tired of the routine at the Troubadour and Tropicana Motel, wanting to change his persona and music, and started distancing himself from Chuck E and Rickie Lee Jones. "He" in this song, isn't Chuck at all. Also makes "Ruby's Arms" that much sadder. I think "Sweet Little Bullet" was also for RLJ.

  • Wow ! Greatest Ricki Lee post ever ! Thanks for sharing it Allan.

Oh and by the way SuperTruth....you're just another of the mindless, talentless losers who stink up this otherwise great site. You can't think of anything complimentary. much less witty to say so you spew out a lame crack about a great artist's age....pathetic to say the least lol.

  • Er, Rickie, hope you don't mind me asking, but... what were the skies like when you were young?

  • @SuperTruth77 the sunsets were the most beautiful she'd ever seen

  • This was always a favorite, still is. Such a great voice and style. Always wished she recorded more.

  • She has a very soulful way of singing. It has a lot to do with the lyrical timing I think. I've always liked this song.

  • oh yeah!

  • Her guitar-playing is so cool!

  • She's firing that guitar!!

  • @sweiland75 Chuck E. Weiss.

  • a MUSICAL vAN gOGH! nO?

  • Ever since I first became avare of RLJ, not 3 month have passed without me listening to her.

Every few years I find new friends, whom can introduce me to new and exciting music, but I keep turning back to listening to RLJ as my base.

Just so you all know you deal with a weirdo, I also love Depeche Mode, David Bowie and Janis Joplin, plus a lotta metal and folk bands.

RLJ can always challenge my musical understanding, just like Eitstürtzende Neubauten does in their way.

  • I sing this to my dog, his name is Pocky, Pockys in love, he gets so happy...

  • @VercingetorixXIII

i love this comment. i sing to my dog too.

  • sweet, sweet rickie lee -- one of a kind!

  • Beautiful......

  • Superb

  • the short hair kills me. she's become the mid-life house frau. guess it really does happen to everyone. don't you women know? hair matters. nails, heels and eyebrows don't! She looks like Martina Navratilova now!

OK, a voice like this helps alot too!

  • @mrguinnss why doesn't nails, heels and eyebrows matter but hair does? what makes hair superior? go google "natalie portman"

  • @collegeboi2388 it's why "don't" nails, heels...... and hair is possibly the #2 focus of a womans look after body type. This is very physical, obviously....

  • @mrguinnss so you're saying you notice a lady's breasts, then her hair, then her eyes/smile/facial features after that? sounds very "douchey" lol

  • @collegeboi2388 idiot

  • @mrguinnss good 1

  • love her! amazing voice....i agree this song will stay with me for ever

  • I want to invite her round for tea

  • really sweet :)

  • She's super live. Like, riveting. Long minutes. Highly recommended, hey.

  • Great version!! Thanks for posting!!

  • Thank you AllanWo for this song....

  • Wow beautiful

  • Rickie Lee is one of the great figures in music from the late 70s. I guess she was overshadowed by a number of other female artists of that time, and possibly because she was reminiscent of the great Joni Mitchell. I'm thrilled to see this vid because I adore RL and she still has it (don't know when this was recorded). But so many women who never got wide airplay (JL did in Australia I think, she was popular here). Anyway, I'll be looking out for more from this diva. Thanks for posting.

  • Brings back childhood memories!

  • If you have the song "COMPANY" of the LP named "RICKIE LEE JONES" she's lighting up a cigarette on the cover. Can you please upload it. Just the regular song, NOT LIVE or anything fancy.

  • Company is one of the most beautiful songs gong.

  • It's not gone. The person who uploaded chuckie in love has it. Bec. it's on the same LP I wish they would upload it. My copy is in Detroit, I'm in California now and I hate it here. My job sent me here.

  • @TOPCOO

poor guy, Just buy it. I've on vinyl :) (snc 28y).

Already digitized to cd qulty. But I would give another doller (itc. euro) to get it.

The name of the Album is "Ricky Lee Jones".

    Company is just a song.

    Good luck at amazon's

  • That's okay if you can't do it. I already have it on vinyl too. I've had the vinyl since it came out years ago. My copy is in Detroit and I now live in California. I was just hoping that since you were able to upload "Chuck E"s in Love" You could upload "Company" as well. Both songs are on the same recording. But that's okay. Have a good new year. Didn't mean to ask you to go out of your way.

  • Quite nice.

  • oh gosh that's sooooo good,

  • thats talent!!!!!!

  • For a while there, "Chuck E Weiss and the Goddamn Liars" used to play at The Central (now the Viper Room) on the Sunset Strip every Monday night. He banged out good old Rock 'N Roll every week!

  • Man that was awesome!! I love it when artists sound vocally the same as when they recorded the song. Great song.

  • A TRUE artiste ♠

  • Love my Rickie!!

  • I dig this song.

  • it looks like they were going to make something official on the back cover of Wait's Blue Valentines lp. LOL. Check it out. The record too. It's brilliant!

  • that's absolutely my favorite Waits album. $29 and an aligator purse, along with Romeo is bleeding. Are the best, tremendouse quartet, plus the Waits' vocals and lyrics

  • yeah-i think it's mine too. I've got all his lps up to Rain Dogs. I like Swordfishtrombones a lot too.

  • i thought they were just lovers. I don't think they married. I could be wrong. Have to Wikipedia it to be sure.

  • I agree with BJrok

  • Saw her at a little club when I was a university student in Chicago in the 80's and have been a fan ever since. She makes my heart sing...

  • I've always loved this song and singer....never get tired of hearing her/it!

  • i heard on a radio show in ireland called mistery train hosted by John Kelly that chucky is himself a singer called chucky vega.Alas John Kellys show is no longer on RTE 1 which is a tragedy .

  • i wonder if she knew a chucky and thats what inspired her to write this song.

  • The only other time I've ever heard a Chuck E mentioned in a song is by Tom Waits, I know he and Ricki hung out together in LA back in the day

  • i wonder if they were just good friends or they had something going?

  • I just remembered, the Chuck E, yhey are refering to is Chuck E Wise, What's with the curvy71, are you braging or do your curves back it up?

  • my husnand thought of the name and i was born in 71.

  • husband, huh, that's the way the whole month has been going for me, I' m probly to old anyway I was born in 58, but what's 12 years between 2 spirits bound together by thr love of music

  • well my husband was born in 1957 we can be friends lol.

  • not to be obnoxious but, so he's almost an old man too. I've got plenty of friends, but what I realy need is a FWB as in with benefits!

  • @undapar1 Chuck E. Weiss finally brought out an album of his own back in the 90's Check it out!

  • She is my best friend's cousin! I have loved this song since I was a kid! I love the way folk singers use the frame of their guitar for the bass or just extra !

  • One of a kind. One of few singers who simply own their songs. The minute others try to imitate, it immediately becomes a joke. =) Wish I could see her live one day...too bad I live here(?).

  • I'm almost 64 years old and that song has stuck in my head all these years. Yea, old people used to be young! Still hot for Rickie.

  • Like you OJ1945 this tune has been stuck in my head forever the chorus is sweet and simple reminds me of the late 70s.... and i'm only 37 haha

  • look at the bright side at least you still have your memory and something great is stuck there

  • Yea!

This vid of RLJ's reminds us, not only the truth that old people used to be young (as you say), but also a fact that not every good thing comes to be popular and get famous under spotlights all through years.

That's probablly why we need to keep remembering this kind of good musicians, and also trying to find good musicians who have already been forgotten by the world!

  • Ah yes, the music industry. The industry of forced-retirements at 39. lol

  • @thirdpositionist Yeah, you're right, just think of poor Keith Richards, Neil Young, John Lee Hooker, Sheryl Crow, Joni Mitchell, Tom Petty...too bad they were cut off in their youth before they had a chance to contribute to music and culture...oh, wait....nevermind.

  • @ojiisan1945 Who could blame you? This is great.

  • @ojiisan1945

I'M ALMOST 50 AND SHE STILL ROCKS....SHE IS UNIQUE. PERIOD.

I LOVE RICKIE....SO HER WHEN I WAS IN MY EARLY 20'S MY MOUTH FLEW OPEN...MOM HAD TO REMIND ME TO CLOSE IT!! GOOD OLE' DAYS!

  • Comment removed

  • @ojiisan1945 When I'm 64 I will probably still love this song either - so I can sympathize with you! Specially since it takes less time to become 64 than to get back in time to when I first heard this song - and that feels like yesterday! :-)

  • @ojiisan1945 That is sooo cool, when I think of the fact that I'm nearly 30 and I was singing and dancing to her song as a toddler cause my dad played it. Nowadays I'm the proud owner off nearly all her albums

  • このリッキー・リーはホントに良い!

    ラス・タイトルマンやレニー・ワロンカーらと作ったファースト・アルバムのテイクより、

    若しかしたら、こっちの方が好きかも!

    最後の笑顔も素敵だ。

  • chur chur

  • More power in her voice? Why change something that is just about perfect.

  • i love this song so much but i wish she had more power in her voice to chill my spine force the notes to bring shivers to the listeners

  • great!

  • "cool and inspired sort of jazz when he walks" - yanno phrases from her songs stick in my head forever like that one and "the most as you'll ever go is back where you used to know" and "he loved her free parts and labor"

  • what a classic this is.

  • Some songs are made of only 2 or 3 chords and suggest a whole complex and rich synphony. This one is certainly one of these rare miraculous piece of music.

    Thank you so much M'am..

    Be Good...

  • pure. wow. still.

  • If you like R L J you should enjoy listening to Juliet Turner, enjoy.

  • Thanks, will check it out, used to listen to RLJ when this album first came out, memories!

  • Sweet

  • I remember seeing this performance. It was on a BBC series featuring songs with notable lyrics, written by the performers. I love her giggle when she didn't get the guitar riff quite right.

  • My ostrich (see my channel to watch a video of him) is named Chuckie, and we are actually thinking about getting him a girlfriend. (An ostrich, of course)

  • hee hee is he tame?

  • I was curious to know the lyrics, 'cause it's one of those tunes you grew up singing wrong, so I looked them up. WOW. This is one of the best written songs ever!!!

  • Used to love this song. Grew up listening to it all the time. Watching Rickie perform it on video is great. Great job Rickster.

  • Fantastic, first two albums are both inspiring and move me more than pretty much anything else....

  • For those of you that haven't heard her first album...treat yourself to a bit of Heaven and buy it. That woman is a genius.

  • great crisp voice they just don't make music like they used to

  • my sister when she was little she said she liked this song so my cousin's use to make fun of her they would say instead of Chuck E in love they would say Jackie's in love

  • wah this is contagious love it

  • I love this woman!....My girlfriend and now wife of 24 years cherish her music..

  • Wow!!!!! She is still so wonderful!

  • i think she used to be tom waits gf

  • Damn, I think I'M in love...

  • sweet!

  • I really like this verson...isn't life cool!

  • I really like this version!

  • i dont like this version aat all

  • great version and Julie sings it well....

  • I heard Rickie on Saturday Night Live and fell in Love. Does anyone have a you tube version of "COOLESVILLE" that is my favorite ever by Rikie Lee please help me find it on here.

  • Excellent! I love that she flubbed the ending guitar solo and then laughed. I've heard Rickie used to have (maybe still has?) TERRIBLE stage fright and would have to get fried in order to play in front of folks. What a talent!

  • love this tune, my daddy used to play this all the time wen i was young..... well im still young i mean like wen i was like 5. lol

  • nice acoustic version

  • Beauty full!

  • Bad version of this great song. There are better ones here by RLJ!

  • sucks

  • Before there was Sheryl Crow, there was Rickie Lee Jones!! Mad, mad talent but didn't get the recognition she truly deserves...my oldest brother introduced this sound to me when I was 10 years old...and I haven't forgotten it sice; thanks for posting this true classic!!

  • beautiful

  • Great performance, thanks for the video.

  • CHUCK BASS!!!

  • I loved this song when I was 18 and love it even more now that I'm 45 and in love with a man named Chucky!

  • Beatiful!!

  • Still a great thrill up my backbone when I hear that unique voice ! Wow !

  • I LOVE YOU STILL!

  • love her!!!!!!!!!!

  • A Woman of "Heart and Mind"- Rickie takes me there, like no other. I cherish her songs.

  • Tom Waits

  • To the person who said that this song is about a male prostitute, it's not. It's about an ex of hers - anybody guess who it was?

  • CHUCK E WEIZ

  • wow - did you see the guy that said tom waits. We used to have an old check e weiss album - may still have it - and he looks a little greasy like a heart attack and vine tom waits, but no, 'tis chuck e. Very Good Sir and I thought we'd all forgotten...

  • "Chuck E.'s in Love" was among those written in the fall of 1977, and it reflects the time Jones spent with friends Tom Waits and Chuck E. Weiss. As Jones remembers, "[Weiss was in love with] his cousin...there was a telephone call from Denver one day and it was Chuck E. And Waits hung up the phone and said, 'Chuck E.'s in love!' I just made the rest of the song up."

  • EXCELLENT! I have just found out about miss jones, was referres to by an Amywinehoue fan, ive always liked this song but never knew who sung it... its nice knowing too that it was written in the year i was born so its something my mum would of listened to thx, must go now need to know more from Rickie xx
