Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
FREAKIN LOVIN IT.....now I KNOW how it came to be in the 70's. Imagine her gat springin in front of the band convincing/showing her sounds as an outofit teen+! Hah! Music is soooo phreakin an tois! Lurv her music...now how do I press today's ignorance.....Let's just 4give idiots that don't hear it...not worth the effort!
Check her out singing background vocals with John Mellencamp on Between a laugh and a tear . It's been one of my favorites for years . It's off Scarecrow from 1985 .
I was in labor with my second child..a daughter...I kept repeating this song and the Hail Mary-what does that say? when my daughter was an infant my husband and our son & I would dance around her swing/seat and sing this song. Both of my kids were born in AF Hospital because my husband was in VietNam. My husband didn't even see his son until he was6 months old. He was lucky enough to be there for this birth of his daughter. I only hope that the returning vets have this much hope & love
You put everything you got on-the-line when you sing your hit song and are accompanied by only the guitar you're playing and, in Ricki's instance, the beautiful voice that God gave ya. Ricki is such an assured performer. Thank you Rickie Lee Jones.
A girlfriend introduced me to the first album, before Chuck E was even on the radio (she also had Steely Dan before anyone knew who they were, what a cool girl, and she could sing jazz too, but was way too shy to do it pro :( ).
So here I am 30+ years later, and the song still gets you. The best is her smile at the end - she's played it a zillion times but she'll play it again just for you.
Seen her twice in London, UK. I'm a Brit, but never been able to find out what plp or the meter means.
Man. What a nice song. But sad, given the context. This was round the time Waits was starting to get tired of the routine at the Troubadour and Tropicana Motel, wanting to change his persona and music, and started distancing himself from Chuck E and Rickie Lee Jones. "He" in this song, isn't Chuck at all. Also makes "Ruby's Arms" that much sadder. I think "Sweet Little Bullet" was also for RLJ.
Wow ! Greatest Ricki Lee post ever ! Thanks for sharing it Allan.
Oh and by the way SuperTruth....you're just another of the mindless, talentless losers who stink up this otherwise great site. You can't think of anything complimentary. much less witty to say so you spew out a lame crack about a great artist's age....pathetic to say the least lol.
the short hair kills me. she's become the mid-life house frau. guess it really does happen to everyone. don't you women know? hair matters. nails, heels and eyebrows don't! She looks like Martina Navratilova now!
@collegeboi2388 it's why "don't" nails, heels...... and hair is possibly the #2 focus of a womans look after body type. This is very physical, obviously....
Rickie Lee is one of the great figures in music from the late 70s. I guess she was overshadowed by a number of other female artists of that time, and possibly because she was reminiscent of the great Joni Mitchell. I'm thrilled to see this vid because I adore RL and she still has it (don't know when this was recorded). But so many women who never got wide airplay (JL did in Australia I think, she was popular here). Anyway, I'll be looking out for more from this diva. Thanks for posting.
If you have the song "COMPANY" of the LP named "RICKIE LEE JONES" she's lighting up a cigarette on the cover. Can you please upload it. Just the regular song, NOT LIVE or anything fancy.

That's okay if you can't do it. I already have it on vinyl too. I've had the vinyl since it came out years ago. My copy is in Detroit and I now live in California. I was just hoping that since you were able to upload "Chuck E"s in Love" You could upload "Company" as well. Both songs are on the same recording. But that's okay. Have a good new year. Didn't mean to ask you to go out of your way.
For a while there, "Chuck E Weiss and the Goddamn Liars" used to play at The Central (now the Viper Room) on the Sunset Strip every Monday night. He banged out good old Rock 'N Roll every week!
it looks like they were going to make something official on the back cover of Wait's Blue Valentines lp. LOL. Check it out. The record too. It's brilliant!
that's absolutely my favorite Waits album. $29 and an aligator purse, along with Romeo is bleeding. Are the best, tremendouse quartet, plus the Waits' vocals and lyrics
i heard on a radio show in ireland called mistery train hosted by John Kelly that chucky is himself a singer called chucky vega.Alas John Kellys show is no longer on RTE 1 which is a tragedy .
husband, huh, that's the way the whole month has been going for me, I' m probly to old anyway I was born in 58, but what's 12 years between 2 spirits bound together by thr love of music
She is my best friend's cousin! I have loved this song since I was a kid! I love the way folk singers use the frame of their guitar for the bass or just extra !
One of a kind. One of few singers who simply own their songs. The minute others try to imitate, it immediately becomes a joke. =) Wish I could see her live one day...too bad I live here(?).
This vid of RLJ's reminds us, not only the truth that old people used to be young (as you say), but also a fact that not every good thing comes to be popular and get famous under spotlights all through years.
That's probablly why we need to keep remembering this kind of good musicians, and also trying to find good musicians who have already been forgotten by the world!
@thirdpositionist Yeah, you're right, just think of poor Keith Richards, Neil Young, John Lee Hooker, Sheryl Crow, Joni Mitchell, Tom Petty...too bad they were cut off in their youth before they had a chance to contribute to music and culture...oh, wait....nevermind.
@ojiisan1945 When I'm 64 I will probably still love this song either - so I can sympathize with you! Specially since it takes less time to become 64 than to get back in time to when I first heard this song - and that feels like yesterday! :-)
@ojiisan1945 That is sooo cool, when I think of the fact that I'm nearly 30 and I was singing and dancing to her song as a toddler cause my dad played it. Nowadays I'm the proud owner off nearly all her albums
"cool and inspired sort of jazz when he walks" - yanno phrases from her songs stick in my head forever like that one and "the most as you'll ever go is back where you used to know" and "he loved her free parts and labor"
Some songs are made of only 2 or 3 chords and suggest a whole complex and rich synphony. This one is certainly one of these rare miraculous piece of music.
I remember seeing this performance. It was on a BBC series featuring songs with notable lyrics, written by the performers. I love her giggle when she didn't get the guitar riff quite right.

I was curious to know the lyrics, 'cause it's one of those tunes you grew up singing wrong, so I looked them up. WOW. This is one of the best written songs ever!!!
my sister when she was little she said she liked this song so my cousin's use to make fun of her they would say instead of Chuck E in love they would say Jackie's in love
I heard Rickie on Saturday Night Live and fell in Love. Does anyone have a you tube version of "COOLESVILLE" that is my favorite ever by Rikie Lee please help me find it on here.
Excellent! I love that she flubbed the ending guitar solo and then laughed. I've heard Rickie used to have (maybe still has?) TERRIBLE stage fright and would have to get fried in order to play in front of folks. What a talent!
Before there was Sheryl Crow, there was Rickie Lee Jones!! Mad, mad talent but didn't get the recognition she truly deserves...my oldest brother introduced this sound to me when I was 10 years old...and I haven't forgotten it sice; thanks for posting this true classic!!
wow - did you see the guy that said tom waits. We used to have an old check e weiss album - may still have it - and he looks a little greasy like a heart attack and vine tom waits, but no, 'tis chuck e. Very Good Sir and I thought we'd all forgotten...
"Chuck E.'s in Love" was among those written in the fall of 1977, and it reflects the time Jones spent with friends Tom Waits and Chuck E. Weiss. As Jones remembers, "[Weiss was in love with] his cousin...there was a telephone call from Denver one day and it was Chuck E. And Waits hung up the phone and said, 'Chuck E.'s in love!' I just made the rest of the song up."
EXCELLENT! I have just found out about miss jones, was referres to by an Amywinehoue fan, ive always liked this song but never knew who sung it... its nice knowing too that it was written in the year i was born so its something my mum would of listened to thx, must go now need to know more from Rickie xx

Every few years I find new friends, whom can introduce me to new and exciting music, but I keep turning back to listening to RLJ as my base.
Just so you all know you deal with a weirdo, I also love Depeche Mode, David Bowie and Janis Joplin, plus a lotta metal and folk bands.
RLJ can always challenge my musical understanding, just like Eitstürtzende Neubauten does in their way.

To the person who said that this song is about a male prostitute, it's not. It's about an ex of hers - anybody guess who it was?

wow - did you see the guy that said tom waits.
