  • East? I thought you said Wiest!

  • This is amazing! Holy crap; the Trombone lines at the beginning are SO FAST. I can't believe we get to be conducted by Steve in BCMEA.

  • What kind of mics are the trumpets using?

  • @Playapusdude From Lab 2009 until the present, all North Texas projects have utilized the highly regarded Neumann KM 84. This is a vintage microphone no longer available for sale by Neumann. It was replaced by the KM 184. Our engineer, Phil Bulla really likes the warm sound the original Neumanns got, and I agree! Thanks for your question! Are you into sound engineering?

  • And, that my friends, is why you have a black guy playing tenor!

  • That BaseBone. Is orgasmic.

  • whats the mumbling thing at the end of the recording? It's on the album too. It sounds like German?

  • @crimsonhawk52 It's something backwards, but I couldn't figure it out

  • @claustraphobix From Steve Wiest: We had the fun idea of including something "Beatle-esque" at the end of this one. Since we already had the low-piano triad ringing forever (ala "A Day in The Life") we took Sylvester's (tenor solo) voice, played it backwards and put it in the background ala George Martin. If you play what we recorded backwards, you will decode the message. It doesn't say "Paul is dead"...but that's the idea. During that time BTW Sylvester's nickname was "Slyclops" FYI.

  • @crimsonhawk52 See the reply to claustraphobix...

  • Sylvester Onyejiaka is such a fucking badass.

  • Steve Wiest is not the soloist... Steve Wiest is the director in this recording.

  • The trumpets melted my face! Also, great trombone solo!

  • Steve Wiest (the trombone soloist) is in a separate room, because that setup allows him to better hear the improve before he plays it w/o the background interference of the other band members. It also allows him to solo from a more pure and uninhibited tone.

  • @brookelyn7714 Steve Wiest is the Director, the soloist is Luke Brimhall.

  • Why is the trombone solo in a separate room?

  • wicked good, wicked fun, bad ass musicians man... great arrangements!

  • What an arrangement! .... Steve is a genius!

  • @MrPovedajr From Steve Wiest: Thanks! (I blush) I wrote this as a jaw-dropping "I can't believe they just payed that" style closer. It is based on my musical impressions of the Ice-Nine crystal from Kurt Voneggut's "Cat's Cradle" A must-read for relaxing bedtime fare:) Thanks, and so glad you dig the chart.

  • The high school jazz band that I play in played this at Reno jazz fest and Next Gen jazz festival, and it worked really well for us (1st and 2nd place). I couldn't pick a single favorite big band chart, but this would be in my top 10. Also, could UNT PLEASE put some records on iTunes?

  • listen to the very end, their is someone speaking backwards

  • the best part was from 0:07 to 5:50

  • One word. FRESH. So intriguing to listen to.

  • oh man...can't get over how awesome the bass bone and the bari sound....

  • Kurt Vonnegut would be proud.

  • We just got this chart for our Jazz band here at the University of Dayton. Wow... what a piece!

  • I actually clicked on this to see if this was the same Steve that played w/Maynard and wanted to hear lick some fancy trombone stuff--regardless I'm in amazement--how many times do you guys get to rehearse this before you can make it sound like this??

  • did you guys notice the feint talking near the end?

  • Wow! This is even better than the Blue note recording...if that's possible! WOW!

  • this is amazing!!

  • TromboneMasterMan wrote: "who's the one [person] that had the audacity to dislike this amazing recording?

  • @northtexasjazz the dislikes are obviously sarcasm lol, i hope

  • @northtexasjazz .....it was probably a deaf guy...thats my only conclusion.

  • Fora de Sério!!! arranjo muito bom...!!

  • I had the fortunate opportunity to see this band live, nothing in this world like it, and I am not using that as a figure of speech, there is literally, absolutely nothing like it.

  • i just saw this live last night. i was sitting in the front row and got a headache from how purely awesome it was. THOSE TRUMPETS ARE RIDICULOUS! Go Saxes.

  • Does anyone know what the cymbal with holes in it is that the drummer is using? Sabian O-Zone?

  • Translation of Gabeih's comment for the non-Portuguese speakers by J. Murphy:

    omg veeery good

  • I just picked up the chart for this song a few days ago. I'm on lead trombone in high school. It's quite challenging to say the least... It's definitely been stretching my range. Not to mention my double tonguing!

  • @theinvisiblelight my school, but bad quality: /watch?v=Azm4D2FWeAE

  • @theinvisiblelight curtis gaeser

  • wow! that's all i can say.

  • freaking beast!!!!

  • The tenor player looks like hes using a Bari Mouthpiece with a Yanigasawa Tenor.

  • I just love the trombone solo.

  • damn Sly killer solo!

  • this reminds me a lot of billy cobham. especially cuz the tenor sounds like brecker too

  • God I love the tenor player's tone. I had trouble closing my jaw after a few of those licks.

  • Tenor Player's name ¿por favor?

  • @slipknotpwnz666 Su nombre es Sylvester Onyejiaka.

  • @northtexasjazz Gracias, espero que lo siguiera en su futuro

  • Slammin' composition of Ice 9 by the Unt One O'Clock Lab band! I'm the harmonica player that plays with Robben Ford, and you guys kicked-it. Great work! Cheers, Andy Just

  • Holy shit!

  • The lead alto player is Sam Reid.

  • Who is the lead alto player?

  • @BanaNananoMi Sam Reid is the lead alto

  • I went to one of their concerts.

    Sounds of spring.

  • Thanks. He plays really well.

  • @DanTheMandrummer The drummer is Michael DeAngelo.

  • lead trombone is blowin

  • @goodgod12321 thats Dave Richards, a good friend of mine. He's an amazing player

  • Any song based on a Vonnegut book is a song I'm gonna like.

  • I play Tenor Sax and I dont think i'll ever be as good as that guy!!!...this is amazinggg!!!

  • ahhh i love this song!! you guys played it great, but i loved this song more when you guys played it live!! absolutely amazing

  • @Raikoninja11 at FOLSOM!!! XD !!!!

  • Ok, scroll to 4:46, turn off the sound, play the video, and watch the trombone players move their slides. It looks insane.

  • grooviest part- 1:30. SO ILL. DAMN.

  • Nice work guys! It's all awesome!!!

  • I gotta say, this song is much harder than it sounds

  • @mattbauer09 - uhhh it sounds pretty friggin hard to begin with

  • @pazootka but that's exactly my point ;)

  • indeed.

  • @MattBauer09: what do you play?

  • @bluewildwind42 trumpet :D

  • @MattBauer09 really? me too. well, i guess this is one song i wont be able to play for a while. those high notes and chord changes sound like murder. you must be one phenomenal trumpet player to be able to play this. something to aspire to i guess

  • @bluewildwind42 Yeah, I'm not even close to playing this song well. We have it in our folders, but we're probably not going to be able to perform this for obvious reasons

  • @MattBauer09 well i wish you and your band good luck in your quest to play ice-nine :) haha

  • @bluewildwind42 Well thank you very much :)

  • seriously...can you guys be any cooler??? Amazing stuff. Proud of you.

  • i love the alto player's response to the tenor lick at 2:20

  • @Bah3932 The tenor was my roommate, Sylvester Oneijiaka, the most talented cat at UNT. The alto's name is Colin Hauser, and that reaction is totally typical of him!!

  • @Bah3932 Ive seen this video a dozen times and I had not noticed that until I read your comment.

  • The one o'clock has some insanely talented musicians! I wish I could be a part, but I don't think they accept string players :/.

  • Awesome!! Congrats on the nominations. One O'Clock has always been a pleasure to listen to. Making Denton proud once again!

  • This is pure FIRE!

  • my professor passed this out today...idk if we can do it lol pretty hard, but not impossible for us. i'm the guitarist.

  • jesus christ.

  • Great composition Steve, and great playing by everyone!

  • my jazz band teacher showed us this and i loved it!!!!

  • who is the trombone solist? amazing piece.

  • sorry got it.....Luke Brimhal

  • A musical sensation!

  • AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME!!!!!!!!

    Truely exciting to listen to!

  • like the trb solo

  • HOLY CRAP.

  • Better than human.

  • bass trombone blew out my speaker!

    haha

  • @nef18 Yeah Jason's a beast!

  • holy shit. this is nasty

  • This is all kinds of awesome.

  • Wow, this really reminds me of several Cowboy Bebop soundtrack songs.

    Very nice.

  • This tune sold me on the lab 2009 cd. Great arrangement, monster bass bone, great lead trumpet sound, all around greatness. Damn.

  • I want luke Brimhall's babies

  • Update: This tune "Ice-Nine" just received a Grammy Nomination for Best Instrumental Composition as well as the entire Lab 2009 album for best Large Jazz Ensemble record!

  • What's the name of the trombone soloist around the 6 minute mark? I want to follow his career. Awesome shit.

  • Do you mean around the 3 minute mark? The trombone soloist is Luke Brimhall.

  • Yea man luke is killin. i take lessons with the same guy he did in high school and i like lukes approach and ideas and most of all his articulation . sick stuff, im gunna transcribe it

  • Wow, that is easily the coolest song I've heard in a few months. As my band director said: "this song is totally schizophrenic" it jumps from section to section almost instantly. Our high school jazz band (the one I'm not in... sigh) is considering playing this. Good luck to our trumpets!

  • I love this song!!! Steve Weist is a beast, not to mention all the members of the 1 o clock band! Yaaaa!

  • Nice - very! That trombone player, wow!

  • I'm in love with this chart. Mr Richards, our jazz band director told us about this. When does the CD come out?

  • That's true. It's by mail order. We're working on online ordering for the near future but we're not quite there yet. --John Murphy, UNT Jazz Studies

  • As of now, I believe it's all by mail. Check out the website though(it's in the video's description).

  • GAHHHHHHHHHH do you guys have CDs that i can get online somehow
