Once saw Ian & the Blockheads supported by Max Wall. Some people heckled when Wall sang a song. Ian thundered on stage livid. (Think Bob Hoskins in Long Good Friday). He delivered a furious lecture & Wall sang again to a respectful & appreciative audience. Much missed!
I was in my mid twenties when the punk/New Wave explosion happened - coming from a progressive rock background I was very dismissive - especially Ian Dury, who, I thought had as much to do with singing, as Adolf Hitler had to do with cultural tolerance. With regard to Ian Dury however, I WAS WRONG! I realise with the hindsight of age and some degree of wisdom that you don't necessarily have to sing in the conventional sense to produce something good.
not punk .nothing to do with punk ,,only punk band was the pistols .. sounds more like the blues 2 me ?? you wanna read up the history of music . your not a very clever trever are you, .ska !!!!!! where were u when the bow bells sounded last , ??? fuck off noody ,, have a listen
I remember New Boots and Panties with great affection, hardly seems thirty years ago. It's bracketed as punk/new wave but it's as much jazz rock as anything. As well as good tunes, there are some great lyrics,as on this number, that capture place and time. Thanks for posting
thank god some1 who knows the diffrence between punk and blues /jazz/ im an old punk ,,and 2 me there is only 1 punk band ever Never mind the dagsbollox heres the pistols !!!! GOD SAVE
my old man he could be singing about my old dad he died 30 years ago i still miss him [straight as a die]ian was a lovely bloke met him once @ the half moon nice fella,

My dad was a driver all his life and his ulcer also got too big, so you can imagine how this great song touches me. God bless you, Ian.
