Most of the home looks really trashy and alot of replacing is gonna have to be done. Alot of money and elbow grease involved here. I just don't know if its worth it though. The under neath of the home is solid, its just the cosmetic. I always say, start with a firm foundation then work up from that. I may start some videos on the before and after it might be one of them things in life I just might have to try out. Thanks for your vids it helps me in getting things moving forward
@ElitePokerPlayer We don't have termites up here. That would be my biggest concern in the South. If you don't have any termite problems I'd say you can make what you want out of the rest of the house. Good to go! Good luck with it.
I just inherited one of these 1800 style homes in alabama. I noticed one thing right off, they dont have hardly any insulation. What are some ideas for insulating these old homes? I also have that same corner of this home leaning downward and saw that the wall was bulging out from the home. I looked at the underside and man, when they said 2x6 or 2 x 10 that was exactlly what they got back in the day. The boards under the home were in great shape and looked solid. No wonder it hasn't fallen.
@ElitePokerPlayer Blown in insulation will do the trick. They can blow it right into the walls and those batten/plaster walls will hold plenty of insulation. Also check the attic and see how much you got. Of course. New windows help too. Good luck with yours.
Thank you for posting this .I am about to replace a 6x8 sill thiat rotted and twisted and its a 2 story balloon constructed where they centered the joists between the studs and didn't connect them any way,I am truesting the Lord to give me insight on how to lift the studs along with the floating joists without buckling the second floor wall.Gonna try pancacke pistons under top half of sill under the studs
@BELINC7 Sounds complicated. Good luck with it. This scared me to death, but lookin' back on it, it was no big deal. Gettin' over the fear was the biggest part.. hahaha.
Wow what a can of worms you opened up on this one! Always feels good to do the job right, and I can see you took no shortcuts. Nice vid thanks for posting
OK, I am having a great time following you...Firstly, you must have a great wife to let you do this to her.. Secondly, I know everyone must have a hobby.. Still by the time you finish this home, you may be ready to go to one... Keep it up.. You got me grinnin for sure...I think I may resemble what you are going through
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. He probably started chipping away to make little repairs and ended up opening a miniature pandora's box. This just reeks of wife yelling, 'THE F&#! ARE YOU DOING???" Great video and narration, Rpeek. Have a similar problem here myself in damp NE Ohio. Same corner of the house, in fact. I anticipate all sorts of yelling and aggravation going on. Five stars.
Nice vid! I knida like the still shot / voice over combo. And nice work with rebuilding that corner. I've seen some old houses that rotted far beyond saving. Glad you caught this when it could still be fixed.
How are the other corners holding up? Was this the first of many to be done, or the only one that needed fixin?
I used the still photos because when i did this, I didn't have the capability to do videos. I did the sills all across the front, and have some more to do, but when I get time I'm going to put more photos of the work. The other corners are pretty good. Need new siding, but inside all seems well. Thanks for the interest.
Whew! I would have had to walk away a couple of times and took some deep breathes. You're right, once you got past that...the rest should be a cake walk.
Love your videos you inspire me to jump on my house....One day
