That is part of the mating ritual. The males also let out BIG, DEEP GROWLS, that say "Ladies, I'm here!" and "Guys, I'm gonna KILL YOU!". And they FIGHT! It's EXTREMELY violent. I've seen it one night about 20 minutes from Avery Island at the edge of a swamp. There was one alligator, and another swam too close. A HUGE set of jaws of the first SLAMMED on the second one in an explosion of teeth, tails, claws, and flying water. When it was over, just one, eyes glowing red in the light, was left.

He's big, but hes not the biggest out there. I haven't seen him myself, but I'm told that there's one out there that's every bit of 15 feet long, about 800 pounds, and he's estimated to be between 80 - 100 years old. Avery Island is a very cool place. I live about 10 minutes from there.
