  • The most original voice ever in contemporary music.

  • Comment removed

  • Musician, painter, sculptor, dictator and sometimes a bit of liar but original and brilliant and sadly missed.

  • Yea man I'm from 94

  • the fabulous furry freak brothers in action....

  • That is, in fact, Roy Estrada of the Mothers, finally looking like he can relax and play without worrying about the beady eye of FZ.

  • Is that Paul Barrere on guitar?

  • Thank fuck for youtube, peace be on you Mr Vliet

  • Comment removed

  • real So Cal freak power unleashed on Germany--good for em..

  • Reality check, please. Was the bassist ever in The Mothers of Invention?

  • @sytby Yes , Thats Roy Estrada. Played bass on most of the early Zappa albums From Freak Out up to the early 70's.

  • what a crap

  • One of the greatest musicians so few have heard of. Entangled by corporate lust no wonder he eventually chose painting over music. The freedom to be what this guy was is what America should be about.

  • 20 people are brain dead

  • goddammm!!! i put this video every days of my life!!!

  • i think captain beefheart is kinda neat the parenthisis are trout mask replica at start some calculations in the middle and finally closed with ice cream for crow.I think there is little doubt about the best stuff. T o fight the catatonic state which we have a lot right now,as he once said.

  • Always loved Beefheart in concert as much as on vinyl

  • Who's playing the kazoo at 3:45?

  • Make that 3:35

  • This is one of those rare times when I prefer the live performance to the recorded version.

  • Good one has set me up for the day. Anyone I meet I'm gonna Boogiarize em.

  • timing is off, off, off, off. but at least CB gets his voice going at 2:22. Studio version is a blue million miles better.

  • @JaZzure79 soooooooomeone doesn't understand syncopation!!!

  • pure awesomeness.

  • Whoa, I almost didn't recognize him without the mustache.

  • A ode to a night time undercover hot and cold with a blues wail what it means to me

  • I think the captain has a looks a bit like jack black in this vid.

  • Roy Estrada on bass??

  • @virino Yes. Roy was also in Zappa's 'Mothers of Invention'.

  • I love the Beefheart, but I think a bit less after seeing Biily-Bob's narrative.

  • Either you get it or you don't! There is no middle ground with Beefheart, never was, never will be. Admittedly, most/many of his admirers are other musicians who just dig his courage and creativity. "To BOLDLY GO....etc,etc"

  • this is shit

  • Weird !! how can this music be weird? interesting, well played and imaginative might be a better description.Corporate driven pop pap bland mush might be better described as weird (shuts down the brain). So it goes..

  • one of the freaking weirdest things I've ever seen.....I know I just don't get you don't have to tell me........i've tried and tried to give this music a chance but most everything I've come across with this band or Captain Beefheart is just FREAKIN WEIRD MAN!

  • wonderful backbeat, driven, subversive, twanging magic!!!

  • Captain B looks like the Wolfman here....sounds like him too!!!

  • How can one not like this? ahhhh Nevermind, we know who you are.

  • The Captain at his best - what a band! On fire all of 'em! Lost my job to this song - it's what he would have wanted - RIP

  • PERFEKCT

  • Very solid, excellent live performance by both CB and the band. At his best, which wasn't often enough, one of the great innovators with a distinctive sound. Still, somewhat overrated by the music historians and too often his lyrics were free-form gibberish.

  • @proexpression You know what's overrated? Your opinions. Being that you're a god damn nobody and all.....

  • @3rdcoastnyucka Ooh, touchy touchy. And you're a somebody we should pay attention to? I gave my opinion, which you're free to reject if you don't see any merit in it. I made it clear I like CB at his best. Your response was just plain rude and uncalled for. If you can't handle differences of opinion, go live on a deserted island.

  • Was this one of his Whistle Test sets - the only place I would have seen him perform and it seems familiar? Totally gorgeous. He weren't no Beefheart for no fing.

  • Funny how this fool suddenly got fat

  • You can hear Nick Cave, the Fall, and PiL in this performance. Man, were these guys influential...

  • @cellojordan don't forget tom waits

  • @Stuie1973 Right, but I thought it was obvious so I didin't mention it.

  • Amazing.

  • Saw this particular show at trinity in early '70's. The opening act was a bunch of trained chimpanzees(really). Winged eel Fingerling? Zoot horn Rollo? who ever did better.

  • Van Vliet will rock FOREVER!

I saw a show of his paintings at Knudler gallery in NYC in '98 or '99. They were utterly fantastic! I wish I coulda been able to afford one (They were around the $25,000 mark.). I'm just glad that he had success in his visual art career after he had kicked serious ass and taken names with his music for 15-20 years.

I had always hoped to meet this guy. Damn....

  • Had his entire LP collection from the 1970's. The dbl LP Trout Mask Replica was a favorite .He also made a cool love songs record. Not his normal weird heavy jazz. Any one remember the Name. Have been buying up every LP

lost in a severe ice storm.1,700 LP's from late 60's through early 80's of acid and rock bands Had two Beatles White Lp's original labels. One never opened. Cost then $3.59 each. Bought 2 on E-bay 1 was mint. $600 to $1,000 for unopened one. Peace

  • Sweeeeeeeet! This is so scary coooool! The guys must've been stoned!!!!! LOL>

  • @scurgeon44 The story is that the Captain did not let the Magic Band use drugs. His method was to encourage the drugless freak-out of afree mind..

  • Beefheart is not dead....silly rumors !

  • @fastnbulbouss I know! what is wrong with people?

  • I wish all three guitar bands sounded like this. Imagine Radiohead doing this.

  • Good old Roy "Ralph" Estrada.

  • Love the odd timing! This boogie is bigger than life...

  • Hey, I love this clip cos it really shows what was so amazing about bands from 60s-70s era.. I mean Look at these cats go! They're solid gone on this groove, dug deep in and it's SO good, and the clothes and everything.. and Dear old Beefheart, what a Dude! Incredible performance, and they ARE playing Live here even though this is from a TV show. We may never see the likes of them again sadly, Truly a Magic Band! I so want a flowery suit like the guy with the hat.. YO! Px :))

  • zoot horn rollo is a sweet guitarist. make sure you check out the band Mallard if you agree.

  • @themitchies

    Mallard? Your the man...themitchies

  • I got booglarised and oh! It was such fun...sorely missed

  • CBH ftW (heh orange box @0:30)

  • One of the most bizarre double bills ever...

John Sebastian opening for Captain Beefheart at The Spectrum long, long ago far, far away.

The crowd was howling for Sebastian to Take A Hike and let Beefheart get on stage.

The Cap'n seemed surprised that he was that popular. However, Philly has been good for avant acts for quite a long time.

I miss his talent and that of Meatball Fulton (Tom Lopez),who had the MOST COOL radio show and played many with "no commercial potential".

  • I fuck my fatass wife to this music at full volume everynight at 6. I hope my neighbors like Beefheart as much as she do cause we aint never gonna stop. uhnm!

  • @PieceofMindmusic LOLOL!!!

  • @PieceofMindmusic What a compelling narrative.

  • @sonicdeath10 - Damn straight, bitch!

  • @PieceofMindmusic That is so disturbing.

  • @angryfurniture

hahaha, it was meant to be ;) - his wife

  • @PieceofMindmusic yesssssss!

  • @PieceofMindmusic best you tube comment evah!

  • @wistoncap - the best part is we actually still do this ritualistically. ~His Wife

  • some guy on chat roulette showed me this and then my computer crashed, this shit is awesome. sorry guy if you thought i nexted you

  • roy estrada!

  • American GENIUS

  • This is absolutely brilliant. Beefheart was nearly untouchable from 1966-1972. He had two really great albums at the end of his career too. Doc at the Radar Station and Ice Cream for Crow are two very solid albums, IMO.

  • A-t-on jamais fait mieux ? (On a rarement fait aussi bien). Splendide morceau, splendides musiciens, splendide clip. Ah la la !...

  • Gotta hear some Beefheart! One of a kind!

  • @ladyash2112 His wife is a very lucky woman to find a great man!...The older Don got the better looking he got!

    Bulbous!

  • Sounds like ZZ Top and Frank Zappa got together, dropped some acid and tried to play a disco tune.

  • Roy Estrada on bass!!!

  • @bamaguy73 @fahim11 Hey, they did a whole album together, Bongo Fury!

  • It's amazing to me how many musicians today were influenced by this man. I was listening to The Mars Volta and swear they must have listened to A LOT of Magic. Brilliant. Wonderful. True Soul.

  • He would have been 70 years today. RIP, good Captain!!

  • RIP BEEFHEART. thanks for the inspiration always.

  • Let us never forget this man.

  • Discovered him after Tom Waits mentioned him as a major influence. Sounds liek it was produced and written in a mental asylum :D Great stuff

  • @fahim113 Tom Waits kicks ass.

  • @WolfmanToldmeToBilo yep indeed he does. Just wonder if these 2 crazies ever collaborated on anything? i guess not cos the earth is still spinning

  • @fahim113 actually they did...WIllie the Pimp off of Zappa's album Hot Rats was by Zappa and Beefheart...seems like they did some other stuff too...they were a perfect combo!

  • This is classic - and don't miss the guitar player's dance at 3:26 -

    -RIP Don Van Vliet

  • Love this! Bass player is Roy Estrada, who sang with Zappa in The Mothers. What strange beautiful music. Its great to know that others appreciate this stuff.

  • weird but absolutly genius, thx Don

  • Don had such beautiful hair in this vid...Furthermore he had the most beautiful green eyes I had ever seen on a man.

  • People like this dont come around nomore. No new music can top the old, that is a fact. From time to time some new good songs see the light but no new masterpieces or really awesome originals steps up. The world is different, people are different and think different.

  • Saw him perform in Detroit back in the day. One of a kind genius who influenced the art form more than we know.

    RIP Don.

  • Hey, Roy estrada from the Mothers on bass! Cool.

  • May You Rest in Peace Don

  • R.I.P. Don! You have left us some beautiful music!

  • I loved the way they dressed back then

  • Beefheart was a chunky boy in this vid

  • 14 people need boogiarized.

  • @smegmasaurus Uhhh, it's 15 now.

  • @fugstik Welcome to the soulless minority! Just exactly what does a person with no soul enjoy?

  • @smegmasaurus You got it all wrong. I like the good Captain. It was some other bonehead that was number 15.

  • @mugwump with you on that...he seems a little distracted though... Still the guitarists are having fun and it was live far as I could tell. Bullshit? No, seminal, truly

  • @BrokenBjartur go listen to N-Dubz retard.

  • HEY DICKHEAD ON THE SOUNDBOARD PUT THE JOINT DOWN AND TURN HIS MIKE UP

  • I always thought it was "Booglarize"...almost a mullet going on there.

  • I always thought it was "Booglarize"...

  • everyone now seems so tame...You were the best Captain.

  • Yup... and Roy Estrada ("Orejon") on bass!

  • R.I.P Captain.

  • sent here by EarthBound Saga

  • When I listened to the Captian in high school in the 70's I was one of a few. Why people can't enjoy the mondo bozo of it all escapes me. A unique artist and I will miss him. WAGGA OOGAA NAGGA

  • Hey, there's Roy Estrada from the Mothers boogieing away on the bass!

  • @pawnee55 you mean the guy saying "i'm the indian of the group" on we-re-only-in-it-fot-the-money??

  • I believe that it was jimmy Carl Black who said that

  • @rudimentaal yeah, you're right: "hello my name is jimmy, carl black, i'm the indian of the group" That phrase was quoted often in highschooldays. How can I forget? Never mind etc etc

  • @pawnee55 and Art Tripp from The Mothers on the drums!

  • Why O why is this gem unrecognized by the masses? I adore this and crack up each time I hear it (or view it, although I'm no vidiot). Sexy wolf brews mental mischief. Thank you, and welcome to your next adventure. xoxo. You will be missed.

    Simply superb!

  • he is so many people rolled into one , fearlessly covering all bases and presenting a true glimpse at unadulterated genius at play......... in a sometimes stuck in the mud world he could be counted on to race ahead while others foundered or tried to sell out

  • Inspirational, dangerous experimental, saw the band at Knebworth, 'making love to a vampire with a moneky on my knee' one of my favourite lyrics, music lives on Don V V (Captain Beefheart) sleep easy :)

  • The commercial period. Still better than most anything else at the time.

  • We salute the great talent of the Captain...pioneering, influential and daring.

This song says it all...he did booglarize everybody

  • I met him in LA. Truly an original. RIP Don.
